I'm running

through trees in a dark forest

jumping from branch to branch

why?

memories flood my mind

of friends and family

of enemies and fear

shots are fired

my speed increases

instinct shouting, "Run!"

a friend fallen behind

a memory long forgoten

a time of no fear

of no running

shots again

closer, louder

a sudden stop

a cliff in my path

shots again

there's no escape

two options left

jump or capture

they're getting closer

dogs slowly encercling

men with ropes, guns, and knives

I recoil, a rock falling over the edge

I turn to look, it's a long way down

choose, captivity or death?

"Jump!", I open my eyes

I'm back in the woods

my friend wounded on the ground

"Get away from here." he says

tiers fall as he passes

I stand, weak, afraid

instinct yelling, "Run!"

a vision maybe, a dream

"Run!"

what am I missing?

a shot, "NO!"

I take off
