Chapter 3
Violence

Blood spurted over his already encrusted hands like a wave of red... like the red hair of his partner, but not as silky. The beast's flesh and muscle tore, squishy and green, his final cry cut of with the crack of bone. The body fell with a thump but Hiei did not toss aside the head he'd tore from his opponent's shoulders as they expected him to. The crowd cheers at his brutality, but Hiei had long since gotten used to ignoring them. He'd won, he was working on a limited time basis now, before the guards drag him back to his cell.

He manages to wrench a bulging bicep from the nearby body and cradle both it and the head to his chest before the guards reach him, he clutches his prize tighter and snarls at them. They just look amused. He knows so long as he goes along peaceably they won't take it from him... they'd enjoyed seeing him fight, so long as he was brutal he could continue to claim his prizes, prizes meant to nourish the withering form of his red-headed partner.

Hiei walks along with the guards, still clutching his prizes tightly. They surround him and talk in amused tones about his fight. Hiei concentrates on other things. His partner will be disappointed if he can't greet him properly. What is his name? Why is it so important to please him again? Those green eyes... yes. Those green eyes are hypnotizing. He likes that red hair... it's soft. What is his name? Damn if Hiei could remember. It is like this after every fight. He'd lose another piece of himself, his partner would coax him and talk sweetly and he'd get a little bit back, but never as much as he lost. The more brutal the fight, the more he would loose, but being brutal allows him to bring back food to his weakening partner.

That was more important.

What is his name?

Hiei found himself in the new cell... they'd moved up the night before. The clang of the closing bars taking him from his thoughts and he finds himself staring at the sleeping form of his partner. The name comes to his lips unbidden and freely, as if the mere sight of the creature before him is enough to wipe away the disgusting nature of his fight.

"Kurama." The pale creamy skin of his eye lids disappeared, long sooty black lashes part and raise to reveal the priceless emerald gems that lay beneath. A small, relieved smile tugs on pale red lips... everything about him tired yet ethereal. The soft but slightly hoarse alto reaches his ears, hoarse from the lack of moisture. Hiei feels unworthy to approach, but wants to offer his prizes to this being...

"Hiei, I am glad to see your safe return."

NO! His partner, he reminds himself, not a god, his partner. His feet move forward and he squats in front of Kurama, yes, that is his name, Kurama. "Eat." An order, his partner frowns at the muscle offered. Hiei hesitates, then cooks the meat with what is left of his excess energy. The green eyes dart to his, there is an emotion there that Hiei cannot place... it unsettles him. A small pale hand reaches out and takes the meat.

"Thank you for sharing Hiei. It is very generous of you." His words are light and polite, even though Hiei knows that his partner is disgusted by the food. Why? Hiei has no idea... it is good meat. But Hiei does not really wish to question this being that stays with him and coaxes back parts of himself he might loose otherwise... it always makes his head hurt to question such things anyway.

The meat is set aside after only a few bites. Hiei knows his partner can stand no more of it, his body does not like it, but it sustains him. Hiei eats the rest, it is good meat. The crack of the beast's skull echoes in the underground prison. It is split in two, horizontally, the bottom is discarded, the brain is removed and devoured, not as good as the muscle, but still food. He presses the upturned top of the skull to pale red lips, urging his partner to drink the pink tinted fluid that is so close to water. The face turns green, but the dry, pale red lips part and drink as much of what is offered as possible. Hiei drinks the rest and places the upturned skull under the drip from the ceiling. They can have more water that way.

A good meal.

Hiei rests his head against Kurama's chest and breathes in the scent, blood is there, but if he paid close enough attention, he could smell rose's, his partner's natural scent. That small had come up and pets his blood covered, tangled, black hair. Hiei knows what is coming and prepares himself for the mental assault.

***
Kurama runs his hands over Hiei's hair. It is messy, and matted with blood. Some time ago this would have bothered the fox, he'd have tricked Hiei into taking a shower, but now it was just enough to know that Hiei is here, with him, and safe.

At least for the moment.

He bites back a groan as his stomach twists uncomfortably. He hadn't wanted to eat, but he hadn't been able to deny Hiei either. The demon not only chose to share his 'food', but had even used the last of his excess energy to cook it. At least they had learned how to summon some of their energy despite the power limiters. It was still emencely draining though.

Kurama snaps back to the task at hand. "There is a small, light blue haired girl with red eyes." The image of this girl, in a blue kimono, playing in the snow flashes before Hiei's eyes. "What is her name Hiei?"

Hiei feels a stab... he should know this. He doesn't say anything, his partner sighs. "At least you remember what she looks like. You have forgotten all the others though." Others? There were others? Hiei tried to think, but only came up the image of that girl and his partner. He looks at Kurama curiously, Kurama just gives him a sad smile, and keeps petting his hair.

"A song Hiei. There is a song I am going to sing. I want you to help me with the lyrics ok?" Hiei continued to look at his partner. Yes there was a song he was supposed to know... one he was supposed to remember. The lyrics escaped his mind though. He growled at the ground in frustration. Kurama's voice was no longer harsh and he sang.

"Let the day float away
as you fall into your dream..."

Yes that was right, the lyrics came back to him.

"...hope and light are shining bright in thee
Fall to sleep my little one...

Hiei picked up for the last bit, his voice a strong contrast.

"...Don't let me hear you cry
drift off to sleep for on your cheek
I left a soft good night."

Maybe things weren't as bad as Kurama thought...

***
Just down the hall, there was another listening through the haze of pained cries and snores.

That song... I've heard it every night since I they got here. By all rights those two should have died. The little one from mental deprivation and the red head from starvation. They keep one another alive. That won't last long, the guards won't put up with teamwork. They'll move to kill soon. Undoubtedly after the red head. The little ones blood lust is entertaining, but the would-be-human shows mercy with quick painless strikes.

Why oh why is that song so familiar? I know that I've heard it... in another time, another place... so very comforting.

'Snap out of it Meiyo, we have fights to win! Those two are a threat! Haven't you noticed that their auras are suppressed? Power limiters like yourself!'

Obviously I noticed or you wouldn't know.

'Fair point, what do we do about them?'

They'll send the red head in alone. He fights by wit, with skill.

'So how do we beat him?'

He has a suppressed power he hasn't showed. It's dangerous, but I can't place it. I thing he's kitsune, must have merged with a human.

'Fantastic how do we win?'

He's old, really old. I can't tell even a remote figure though.

'HOW DO WE WIN!?'

I... don't know.

'What do you mean you don't know?'

He gives me nothing! Completely blank... his plans are random... his fighting style shifts with each opponent. Its like grasping at a ghost... a true kitsune, one that ought to make Inari proud.

'Just so long as we don't loose, she's waiting for us.'

I know.

Meiyo sighed and settled against the wall as the kitsune's alto voice continued to coax life out of his little companion. The song still lingering in his mind, breaking him away from the hell hole in sweet dreams, dreams where he could wrap his arms around her.

A/N:
Hey guys, this chapter actually gave me quite a bit of trouble. I hope you all enjoy it. And yes, Meiyo is talking to himself. He's been in that place for some time and has managed to keep some of his sanity, but really now, when you have no one else to talk to...

Anyway, I might be able to give you another chapter tonight. We'll see. If not it will be up soon.
