Chapter 7
Discovery
Shura sits a good five feet from the bed. Any closer would put him at risk from the fire demon guarding Kurama. He isn't allowed near. His father told him that only Hiei's sister and Kurama's mother were allowed to touch him. Shura wants to tear into the fire demon, but his father said not to, so Shura sits just out of range.
He ponders the strange female known to him as Shiori, and to Kurama as Mother.
His father shows respect to the woman. He knows that Kurama goes through great lengths to keep the woman safe. But it still eludes him as to why...
Her behavior is strange. She uses a soft voice to command, gives orders with 'please' and 'thank-you'. She never uses force but they all do as she says... even his father.
Her aura isn't so strong. Strong for a ningen maybe. She doesn't deceive or trick or analyze things like Kurama... but she has his smile... the one that makes Shura's insides warm. Her eyes are his, that look when she asked him if he wanted a cookie. He'd ran. He doesn't know what a cookie is anyway... not really. Everything about her is gentle and soft and sweet, like Kurama pretends to be. She isn't pretending though. He is sure of it.
Then why do they all listen to her? She isn't strong or dangerous at all. She isn't a very good healer either. It seems as though the woman in question is completely helpless.
Why?
She appears behind him and he dashes out. Why does she make him feel so strange? Why does he feel like he's...
Missing something?
***
Shori steps into her son's new room. He hadn't woken up since they'd found him... over a week ago. The day before Yomi had insisted they bring him to Gandara; where there is better technology to nurse his wounds. Eventually they all agreed; the move was made. The number of strange devices used to treat her son had scared her slightly, but that was all over with. Shori has to admit that he looks better.
The young man, Shura they had introduced him as, jumps to his feet at her entry and shuffles out of the room. She hadn't gotten a word out of him since their introduction. She knows the boy must care a great deal about Suuichi, she'd heard him quote her son a few times when he didn't know she was in the room, but for some reason the boy refuses to be in the same room with her for more than a few moments. Yomi said it was just his youth acting up, that he had been the same at that age. Shiori wasn't really sure what he had meant by that.
She brushes back Suuichi's bangs, only to find him sweating profusely. Gently, Shori pulls back the covers and goes to get a cool cloth, running a quick hand through Hiei's hair as she goes. The young man still hasn't said much anything. Yusuke said his mind has been affected by being in such a horrid place for so long. They aren't telling her something. Something about Hiei's mental state, something about the place they had been trapped in. Shori doesn't push though, she is simply happy to have her little Suuichi back.
"Hey Shiori! Come here! You need to meet this guy!" She turns to see a grinning Yusuke has addressed her. Yomi offers her an inviting smile and she relaxes. Between Yusuke and Kazuma-kun is a man with silk black hair pulled tight on top of his head. Red eyes flick over her and a lopsided grin emerges. The man is just a bit shorter than Kazuma-kun, he has a relaxed form, a red shirt with a brown cloak and black pants. She doesn't know him.
Shiori approaches slowly, offering him her hand which he takes and kisses. "So this is my fox friend's famous Mother? It is pleasurable to meet you." He smiles bright at her, her cheeks got red in a hurry. Yusuke laughs.
"No, no! he means, 'It's a pleasure to meet you!' He doesn't speak Japanese very well. This is the guy that told us where to find Kurama and Hiei." Shori relaxes and smiles back at the man.
"My apologies Hatanaka-san. I am Meiyo. I want to thank-you your son for helping me to escape." She finds herself holding in a laugh at the man's accent, he seems truly polite.
"No thanks necesary Meiyo-san. I am happy that awful place is shut down, I am sure Suuichi would tell you the same."
"You are very kind. I will stay to tell him thank-you myself, but after I need to find my mate and child."
"Your mate?" Shiori puzzles over the word.
"Oh, humans say? Uh..." Yusuke chuckles and provides the sought after word.
"Wife, he needs to find his wife and child." Shiori covers her mouth in horror.
"You have a wife? Oh dear she must miss you terribly! A child too!? Oh dear! How old is he? Or is it she? What's you wife's name? Maybe we can help!?" The man smiles and shakes his head.
"I don't know if its a boy or a girl. I was taken while she was pregnant. I am looking forward to the sex, a boy would be great but I hope a girl has her Mother's beauty. She probably went to her homeland for protection when I disappeared." She smiles at the rough grammar, funny how it never occurred to her that demons might speak something other than Japanese, perhaps because Yomi and Mukuro speak perfect Japanese. But she had heard the monks at Yusuke's home speaking something else. They always spoke Japanese to her though, though they didn't talk much.
"Oh thank goodness you know where they are!" He smiles at her and opens his mouth to reply when his whole demeanor changes. His eyes fly down the hall, lit up to a searing color, his grin fades, he looks ready to run.
"Meiyo-san?"
***
The little ningen woman is sweet, and Meiyo finds himself instantly fond of her. Hope of finding his love has kept him in a perpetually good mood. He owes words of gratitude to the kitsune, but nothing else will stop him in his pursuit. He continues his conversation with her, answering her questions. But then he hears it... the song... drifting in from the open doorway.
Let the day float away
as you fall into your dream
hope and light are shining bright in thee
"The kitsune sang that too... I know I've heard it..." He tries to shake the fuzz from his brain. He can feel his face scrunch in confusion, feel the young Mazaku clap him on the shoulder and ask if he's alright. It seems so distant. Distant because of the memory that surfaces with the next lyrics.
Fall to sleep my little one
don't let me hear you cry
She sang it, sang it while rubbing her stomach. She looked up at him and asked if Daddy liked the lullaby. He told her it was perfect. His feet are moving faster than they have in a long time. He can hear them calling to him, asking him what the problem is.
He doesn't care. His carefully constructed patience, the one he'd built in his years of solitude snapped the moment he realized it is her voice. His mate, his heart, his love. She is here. Nothing will stop him, not servants that scramble or the weak door to the garden. The last words come from the back, she's hidden behind the willow.
Drift off to sleep for on your cheek
I left a soft goodnight...
He tears the branches aside, his careless destruction flaring up, all his old passions and his distress from the years spent away from her pour into her name.
"Hina!"
But the young woman under the tree is not his Hina, it completely throws him off guard, all he can do is stare. Yusuke is at his side again.
"Her name is Yukina, not Hina." The young man is staring at him strangely. Hina's voice reaches him again, but it is coming to him from the young ice apparition named Yukina.
"How... how do you know my Mother's name? Are you? Are you my brother?" The voice is filled with hope... his brain is frozen by the information, he can't process it.
"Mother? Brother?" Meiyo shakes his head in confusion... it is starting to pound.
"Yes, my brother! Oh you must be! Mother said that father was a fire demon with long silky black hair and bright red eyes. She said it made her happy to think about them, and when brother was born he had father's black hair and red eyes!" Her voice is filled with glee and she claps her hands together excitedly.
"Yukina I don't think this guy is your brother..." Meiyo cuts Yusuke off.
"Your Mother is Hina?" He whispers, staring into her red eyes, his red eyes. She nods enthusiastically.
"Then I am not your brother..." He takes a deep breath to clear his raspy throat and watery eyes. "I am your father. Hina the Koroomie is my mate." Her smile falls, Yusuke stares at him in shock, Kuwabara sputters, Shiori covers her mouth.
Her eyes are dark, completely unreadable, how very like Hina. "You are my father?" Her tone is soft, quiet. He is overwhelmed by the need to hold her, to prove to himself that she is real. She had indeed inherited her Mother's beauty.
"Yes..." He breathes and leans down to envelope her in his arms... to breathe in her scent...
He is sent back onto his ass by the hand that comes out of nowhere, a little, soft hand, that cracks against his cheek hard enough to echo. He raises a hand to his burning cheek, burning from cold, not heat. Red eyes bore into him, his red eyes, his passion. A passion that Hina rarely showed. His traits spurt to life in his little daughter, his daughter born of fire and ice.
"You bastard!" She shrieks. The others completely shocked into silence by the dimunitive girl's actions. Usually so quiet, sweet, and loving. Where has that Yukina gone? "Why!?" She screams, the tear gems hit the soft grass, and Meiyo sees another, his Hina. His brain can't take in her hate, not hate from the daughter he'd loved without ever knowing her. "Why did you leave!? Mother loved you!" Of course Hina loves him. He needs to find her still. "It's all your fault! It's your fault Mother went home! Your fault they threw Brother off the island! Your fault she killed herself!" She has a brother? Then he has a son... he must find his son as well then. "WHY!?" She screams, perfect tear gems litter the ground like dew on the grass, he pulls her into a hug.
His little girl safe in his arms, right where she belongs. Her icy chill bites his skin, her little fists beat against his chest, her screaming pounds against his eardrums.
His brain registers none of it.
***
Kuwabara looks on in horror and shock. His sweet little Yukina... she's crying... he'd seen her cry though... she's freezing the air... but he'd seen her do that too. No, its the absolute hatred, the pure ferocity in her eyes that shocks him. She'd never hit anyone in the entire time he'd known her, but there she was, beating her fists against Meiyo's chest as hard as she could. Were he human, he'd have broken bones... as it is... Kuwabara isn't so sure he doesn't.
He doesn't respond though. No one moves but Yukina in fact. The only indication that Meiyo is alive is his incessant whispering into Yukina's ear. He can't tell what the man is saying, but he looks completely at peace. His aura has a calm to it that washes over him, easing his discomfort at the sharpness that is coming from Yukina.
A fiery ice apparition and a cool fire demon... irony at its best.
Kuwabara finally feels himself move, place a hand on Yukina's hair. She doesn't respond, she just keeps pounding into Meiyo.
"Yukina, stop." His soft words make her turn. Make her stare at him with those pain and hate filled eyes. Pain for her Mother and Brother, hate for a man she hadn't met before today, a man he knows loves her more than anything. "It's not his fault. He didn't leave. It was those same guys the took Kurama and Hiei. They took him too. Kurama busted him out and he came here to tell us where they were. He was just telling us how he wants to go look for you and your mom." Her eyes drop the hate, but the gap is quickly filled in by pain, a deep, enveloping pain that she'd suppressed her whole life.
She hugs her father with all the strength she had, only moments before, been using to pound into him with. She cries everything into his shoulder. She cries for her Mother's loneliness and pain. She cries for her Brother, alone and abandoned. She cries for Rui, her Mother's friend, and the guilt Rui has harbored for years. She cries for all the hate she'd felt for her Father, she cries that she can't depend on that hate anymore. She cries for this new Father, one that loves her and her Mother and brother, one that didn't abandoned them, one that has pined for them for years in a dark little cell.
She cries for her family, and just a little for herself.
Kuwabara steps back, unable to handle the extremes of her emotions. He busies himself with collecting Yukina's tear gems. Yusuke and Shori join him, they would give them to her later.
Meiyo whispers sweetness into his daughter's ear. Not noticing her change. He just whispers the sweet words from his heart. Words of her and her brother and her mother and him, all together, all happy, and no one is alone.
Never, ever, alone again.
