Chapter 10
Escape

"So let me get this straight. My half-starved stepson with bruised ribs, sneaked out of his room by leaving a decoy plant, stole a device from your lab to remove power limiters, set off a fire in the kitchen as a secondary decoy, made five distracting breaches in your outer security... only to escape through a tunnel in the basement, with his violent mentally disabled friend in tow?" Kazuya looks furious.

Yomi smiles. "That is what the preliminary reports indicate, yes. I must say that he really out did himself this time... must be the pent up energy from being contained too long."

Yusuke and Kuwabara bust up laughing. Kazuya continues to glare. Yusuke catches his breath first. "I told you Meiyo! Kurama has the best fucking plans ever! Just keep watching cause I know it ain't over! You just don't mess with Fox-boy when he has his mind set on something! Damn its good to have him back!" Kuwabara grins, still chuckling.

"You bet Urameshi! When they get back the runt will be back to his nasty old self!" Yusuke looks contemplative, the grin on his face growing.

"You know Kuwa... Kurama felt quite a bit stronger, he's been fighting this whole time with that limiter on... I think it was great training. Which means Hiei must have gotten stronger too right?"

"Uh... yeah I guess..."

"Now they are going off to tramp around Makai until they find Hiei's mind... which means even more training for them right?"

"Uh huh..." Kuwabara nods... not quite following the train of thought.

"So that means that we are behind! We need to get to some serious training or else they'll pass us... well me. You are kinda a weakling..."

"Hey Urameshi I can kick your butt if I want to!"

They proceed to get into a pointless fight. Yomi hands an envelope to Shiori, Mother written across the front in Kurama's gorgeous handwriting.

"I do believe this is for you." She takes it and rips it open, reading it out loud.

Dear Mother,

I regret to inform you that I will have to be away for some time yet. I will be able to continue to work for father via my laptop and cell phone that I took the time to retrieve from your quarters before you managed to return with father. Forgive my sneaky nature, but you see, I had made up my mind before you left, actually as soon as I realized that Hiei had stayed loyal to our alliance even in insanity. I only sought to help you understand why. He is my partner, and I cannot abandon him.

Please don't worry, I can more than take care of myself. Hiei is with me as well. So long as my partner has my back I know everything will be alright. His quiet presence has kept me calm and collected through your illness, our imprisonment and parole, fighting alongside Yusuke, the dark tournament, Raizen's death, the Makai tournament, the games... and so much more. I will be perfectly fine.

Tell Suu-chan he can e-mail me if he has trouble with his homework.

Warn Yomi not to bother tracking my cell phone or laptop signals, I've already had them scrambled.

Yusuke's guard is weak on his left flank, I am sure this information will assist his training. Tell him to bring Keiko home a nice necklace, there are a few in my nightstand here at Gandara. He can pick one out, he'll need it. As payment he can escort my family safely home, he is the one that brought you here.

Lastly I'd like you to inform Kuwabara that there are study materials, and college applications for him in the left bottom drawer of my desk in my apartment. I am sure you all have found a way to get in there and take my food already. I wish him the best of luck in his senior year.

Hiei and I will return as soon as possible.

Bye Mother, I love you, I'll call tomorrow.

- Suuichi

Shiori bursts into tears at the ending comment. But she staves back her worry with the knowledge that Suuichi can take care of himself, and that Hiei is there to assist when necesary. Kazuya pulls her close as her tears drip onto the letter.

Yusuke teases Kuwabara, Kuwabara teases Yusuke. They get into another pointless fight.

Yomi grins and exits, excited by the new dimension to their game.

Meiyo just watches them all, smiling at his new family as he holds his daughter close.

***
Kurama flips his cell phone closed and gazes at Hiei from across the camp fire. He is proud the the violent little half ling feels safe enough to sleep in his presence.

It was a difficult few day's travel to this particular den, but the security is worth it. Deep within one of Makai's oldest, and most dangerous forests with plenty of plants loyal to him. They could stay here for months without running out of food or water and no one would ever be able to reach them. Well, none that would be looking for them anyway. Even if a skilled plant manipulator made it in this far, the plants loyal to Kurama would not allow them to get anywhere near his den.

He feels safe enough to drop his guard for a little while.

Shiori is worried for him. He had heard it in her voice even if she had tried to cover it up. Of course Mother is worried. While I hate to be the cause of that I must tend to Hiei. The key to retrieving his mind is obviously the Jagan... but dare I release it while Hiei is not here to control it?

He looks Hiei over again.

"Not like I have that much of a choice." Kurama approaches Hiei slowly, letting his friend know before hand that he is coming. Startling Hiei is never a good idea, startling him while his mind is absent is akin to a death wish.

Hiei sits up and rubs his ruby red eyes, looking up at Kurama with an expression that reminds Kurama of a small child. It pulls at his heart.

"Hiei, I am going to try something new ok? Just stay relaxed." Kurama reaches out slowly, carefully untying and removing the ward from the Jagan. Hiei's eyes dull and his face blanks as his third eye opens.

Why have you released me?

Kurama keeps his face blank, knowing the Jagan to be a not-quite-ally. "I require your assistance in retrieving Hiei's mind." It laughs.

Why would I do that?

"Because if you don't I will replace the ward and you can suffer to be cooped up for the rest of this body's life, after all, this brainless Hiei will never release you."

You make a convincing case Kitsune. I will help you, but only for your gall. Careful, I might start to like you.

"Well you best get comfortable at the very least. We might be together for quite some time."

Oh, I already know where his mind is. The difficult part is retrieving it.

"What do you mean?"

Interesting that you haven't noticed. I thought you more perceptive than that.

"Where is Hiei?"

Hiei is closer than you think. After all, he has responsibilities. So his mind went where he knew it would be safe, even unconsciously.

Kurama's eyes widen. He really hadn't noticed. "How do we get it back?" He whispers.

That, Kitsune, is the fun part. At least for me.
