The afterlife is a confusing thing.
Many religions are based upon the belief that once you die, there is something greater there, waiting with open and warm hands for you to fall into. Never in one religion has there been promises of a quick ending, were you cease to exist. Where you disappear, like steam from a cup of warm liquid. You become nothing. You are obliterated and are never seen or heard of again.
If this were so, it would have made Hieis life, …err… afterlife, a lot easier.
He had never had a set belief, he'd always told himself he would worry about it when the time came.
Now though, he wished he had read up on it when he could.
The moon was high and the stars were covered with dark clouds, every now and again it would flash with lightning but it never hit the ground, it just forked back up into the sky again.
It wasn't raining but it was cold and eerily silent.
Hiei walked down the path, leaving the cemetery.
It had been two night since the day he met Yusuke, so far he had figured out a few rules to this whole being dead thing.
He could only walk outside of the cemetery if it was night, other than that he could not leave his headstone, if he didn't return before sun up he would skip forward to midnight the next night. No one that he knew could see him - bar Yusuke- and others he didn't know could see him but would never remember him. He could affect things, like the Photograph for example. He didn't need to eat or drink. And, if he wanted, he could walk through walls.
He had spent most of the night testing his abilities and such to see what he could do, he had also been musing about what he was sent here to do. They hadn't exactly specific on what he had to do.
He suspected it was something to do with Yusuke seem as he was the only one who could see him, but it could have just been a fluke- maybe he was one of those people who could see ghosts and things, like Kuwabara claimed he could, then again, maybe it wasn't.
As he came to the corner of the street he was walking on he stopped as he recognized a girl on the other side of the road.
It was Botan, one of his little sisters friends.
At the thought of his sister he immediately felt guilt claw at him with her vicious claws.
As children they had been separated when they had been adopted separately. He had lived in the same town and been to the same school as her for all their life, he new she was searching for him, but he never told her that he was her brother.
Botan was walking across the light intersection and didn't seem to notice him; in fact she walked straight passed him. As she walked passed she just about brushed shoulders with him.
It was then that he realized she was crying.
He considered following her to see what was wrong, but then immediately stopped realizing that she either wouldn't see him or wouldn't recognize him. His thought suddenly ground to a halt however when he felt the trap door beneath his feet and the screams in his ears again.
He turned on his heal and walked away quietly.
-
Yusuke Jumped when Hiei suddenly appeared through the wall, dropping his cigarette onto his shirt, and swiping at it and standing up when he realized it was starting to burn a rather large whole in it.
“God Damnit Hiei!” he said pulling his shirt of his head and shaking it out. The cigarette fell to the ground with a slight thud and Yusuke picked it up, placing it back in his mouth and putting his shirt back on after.
“Don't sneak up on me like that!”
Hiei, who had been regarding him with a calm stare turned on his heal and went toward Yusukes bedroom, saying nothing.
Yusuke, being utterly feed up and annoyed just sat back down on his couch to watch Orphan, as he had been doing before Hiei had appeared and scared the living shits out of him.
He only looked up again as Hiei walked into the room and stood in front of him, shoving a picture under his nose. “What the hell?” he asked pulling the picture out from his nose and held it a little further away from his face.
Hiei walked over to the window seal and sat, still saying nothing.
Yusuke stared down at the photo wondering why the hell Hiei had given him a picture of his friends. The red head stood with an arm around both Keiko and Botans shoulders, the three were in front of a new nightclub that had just opened. If you looked really closely, Hiei could be seen in the background in an almost turned away pose.
He never really had liked photos.
Yusuke lowered the photo and looked at Hiei, “What?”
“How has Kurama been doing?” Hiei asked, not looking at Yusuke but keeping his gaze on the nearly rising sun. Though he didn't have to see to notice that Yusuke was wincing, he could see him in the reflection of the windows anyway.
“He…he doesn't exactly…” Yusuke paused here, trying to think of the right word. “Keep in touch these days.”
“What do you mean?” Hiei asked turning to face him.
“Well…since you died, he's been hanging around some really shifty people, and he's, well…different.”
Hiei narrowed his eyes at Yusuke, noting the sadness in his eyes and turned back to the horizon.
He had to get going soon, the sun would bee rising in a few more minutes.
Yusuke, unaware of Hieis musings looked back down at the picture and sighed, taking a drag of his cigarette. Suddenly he thought of something,
“Hey, Hiei-“
It didn't really come as a surprise when he saw that Hiei was nowhere in sight.
“Hiei?”
He gave up and turned back to the T.V. cursing when he realized he'd missed an entire episode because of Hiei.
-
Back at the cemetery Hiei rested on one of the statues, it was an angel with outstretched hands, holding an open book. He sat cross-legged in-between the pages and simply watched all day long. And memorizing the small headstone of his own grave, wich was next to him.
“What have you gotten you're self into?” Hiei muttered, watching as people slowly began to fill the cemetery, a funeral was taking place.
-
Later that day just as the sun had gone down, and the nightlife was out Yusuke left his apartment, not bothering to lock it incase Atsuko could be back.
He was supposed to be meeting some friends soon, however he had half an hour to kill, so he decided to go and see Hiei.
Climbing over the fence again, being careful not to catch his jeans on the spokes this time, he walked up the eerie path towards the back of the cemetery. During the day cemeteries always seemed more innocent. A thin layer of fog layered the grassy graveyard and the willow Near Hieis grave groaned and creaked as its longs intertwined branches rubbed against each other. The weather hadn't lessened up any either, but it had not rained, there was no wind to move the thunderstorm away.
“Hiei?” Yusuke called when he reached Hieis grave, staring at the angel statue beside it wryly. He had never liked statues; they were too creepy for him.
“What Yusuke?” Hieis voice came, but he couldn't see him.
Yusuke did a 360 and looked around him for Hiei, “Where are ya?”
“Up.” Came the simple reply.
Sure enough when Yusuke did look up he was greeted with Hiei perched above him on one of the thicker tree branches like a cat. Hiei eyes seemed to glow in the dark, as they always had when he were alive.
“Yo.” He said lifting up a hand in greeting and sitting on the grass, craning his neck to look at Hiei.
“What do you want?” he asked, still showing no emotions.
Yusuke began to pick at the grass from habit as he spoke with his friend. “I wanted to clear some things up.”
Hiei didn't say anything, so Yusuke took this as a cue to continue.
“Where have you been the last couple of days and how long have you been here. As a ghost or whatever you are.” He asked looking up at Hiei.
Hiei sighed and shifted his footing before standing up and stepping off the tree, falling a few meters before he landed in a neat crouch. Yusukes eye twitched, Hiei had always been pretty weird when he was alive but now he was even worse, and how can he be that agile? It's not human.
“I'm not sure how long I was here for before I met you, the last couple of days I've been wandering, I can't leave here during the day, I'm not sure why.”
Yusuke nodded.
“Is that all?”
He nodded again.
Behind him he could hear a car pull up at the cemeteries gate, the pumping bass and loud music could be easily heard from where they were, in the very corner of the cemetery.
Yusuke turned too see who it was.
A head pooped out from one of the dark tinted windows and shouted for Yusuke to hurry his ass up before disappearing again and changing the music, an old man across the road peaked out through his windows at the delinquent.
Behind him Yusuke could here Hiei growl, “Fucking Kuwabara.”
He laughed and stood up, looking down at Hiei who was still crouched, not too far away from him, “Were gonna race tonight, you wanna come?”
Hiei stood slowly and nodded, “I want to test something anyway.”
Yusuke decided not to say anything and just set down the path, climbing over the fence again and walking to the black car, Hiei beside him just walked through the gate and stood at the drivers window as Yusuke hopped in the passengers side.
“Yo, Kuwabara, mind if we have and extra tag along?” he asked as they taped knuckles in a hip sort of `handshake' before Yusuke pointed to the window, were Hiei was standing.
Kuwabara put the CD case down and looked at the window, “Who is- HOLLY SHIT!” Kuwabara just about hit the roof in shock. Hiei smirked at him.
“How the hell- I thought you were dead!” he said looking from Yusuke to Hiei in disbelief.
“I am dead.” Hiei said matter of factly, suddenly appearing in the back seat.
They both jumped this time.
“Will you stop doing that!!”
-
Perth was well known for its street racing circuits and costume shops, every night there would be races, depending on who you are is how much you know, if you happen to come across a street race gathering you had better stop and turn the other way unless your well acquainted with someone in high places.
Skyscrapers twinkled in the night and street lamps glowed eerie orange as the black car drove down a main highway dodging through the other cars at an insane pace.
Inside the car Kuwabara was griping the steering wheel in a white nicked grip as he tried to digest the situation.
“But he's dead! Why can you and I see him! Why is he even here!!” he said, frustrated.
Yusuke pulled a CD out of its case and slid it into the CD player, “Jeez, I don't know Kuwabara, why don't you ask him. He's sitting right behind you.”
Kuwabara looked into the rearview vision mirror at Hiei, who sat slouched back in the car with his hands behind his head, staring at the roof of the car as the lights moved across it.
He's even creeper when he's dead. He thought, shifting his eyes back to Yusuke who was searching for a song on the CD that he liked.
“He doesn't look like he wants to talk to me.” Kuwabara said, shifting his eyes back onto the road as they went through a tunnel.
Faintly he could hear a `got that right, asshole' over the music.
Yusuke nodded and pressed play, sitting back in his seat he wound down his window and stack his arm out and let his hand glide through the wind, “This is a pretty sweet car Kuwabara, who'd you have to con to get this?” Yusuke taunted turning to look at his friend.
In the back seat Hiei raised an eyebrow.
Kuwabara sniffed and lessened his grip on the steering wheel, “I won it a couple of days ago, and I had some spare cash lying around so I did it up and gave it a new paint job.”
Yusuke nodded. “Nissan skyline aint it?”(1)
“Yup.” Kuwabara said tapping his fingers to the music, Queens of the stone ages Little sister.
“Turn here” Yusuke said pointing to a deserted street, “They're all meeting in Northbridge (2) again, like they did on Tuesday.” Kuwabara nodded and turned the corner. Already he could hear cars revving and loud music from one of the clubs nearby where they would all meet before they go out.

In a back ally in the slums of the town Kurama sat on an emergency staircase, waiting.
Empty bins and rubbish filled the small pathway, as you walked through you could see syringes and empty beer bottles on the side of the walkway, either side of him apartments stood high and washing cables swung in the little wind there was.
In his hand Kurama held a red pocketknife, opening and closing it mindlessly.
“Kurama?”
Kurama stood when his name was called and turned as a dark person came into view, he tucked his knife into his pocket as the man extended his hand in greeting, both shaking his gloved hands.
The man was more like a 20 year old trying to look older. He wore a white dress shirt over a quarter-sleeved black fishnet top and wore bags jeans and a pair of back converse, a rather large silver cross-hung around his neck and if you looked close enough you could see he had a tattoo of a clown on his neck.
“ I need a favor of you.” The guy asked placing a hand on Kuramas shoulder and directing him in a sort of `walk with me' way. Kurama allowed himself to be pulled along, he didn't want to get on his clients bad side.
“There is this person whos been snooping around my business, you see,” they said waving a hand about and turning his amber eyes onto Kurama, checking to see if he understood.
Kurama nodded.
“Right, I want him to take an unexpected holiday and never come back, you understand?”
“Yeah,” Kurama said sticking his hands into his pockets. “You want him dead.”
The mans hand slipped off Kuramas shoulder and he turned to face him, “Exactly.” he said not aware that Kurama was slowly opening the blade of his knife in his pocket.
“What's his name?”
“Koenma.”
Kurama nodded his head in recognition, finally opening the blade all the way and set it place with an almost inaudible click, “I've been hired by him before.” Kurama said calmly.
“Really.” The man said suspicious of Kuramas stalling, normally by now they would be talking about payment and fees, but here something was not right.
“Yeah he hired me too get rid of this real jerk who coned his daughter into marrying him.” Kurama said, glaring at the other man.
The man barely had time to react, other than a slight widening of the eyes in recognition and this single thought of `oh shit.' Running through his head as Kurama pulled the knife out of his pocket and sliced his jugular open, jumping back as a bust of air came from the mans lungs and he fell to the floor instantly, dead.
“Death by asphyxiation.” Kurama said liking his blade clean before pushing the mans head to the side and looking at the joker tattoo for a while before pressing his blade up against it and cutting the skin clean off, blood pouring all over his gloves.
Kurama liked the blade clean again and put it back into his pocket, pulling a small tin out of his other pocket he put the skin with the tattoo still on it into the tin and shoved that into his long coat pocket.
He would have walked away now but a glint caught his eye and he looked back down to the dead man, the silver cross that lay around his leg was reflecting the light of the street lamp and shining it onto his face.
Kurama looked around to make sure no one was watching and bent down to have a closer look at the cross, blinking he made a two second decision to steal the necklace, he yanked on the cord holding the cross to the mans neck and stood up again. Tying the broken string around his neck he kicked the body and left with a sort laugh.
“Amen asshole.”

A/N:
(1)- a Nissan skyline is like the blue and silver car off 2 fast 2 furious. Kuwabaras car one is black with a green under glow light.
(2)- I actually live 10 minutes away from Northbridge (wich isn't actually a bridge it's a suburb were all the clubs are in the city) and if I sit outside at night you can here people dragging and street racing all night long, it usually gets worse if it rains, that's when the hoons come out.
W00t! I'm back, I might be updating a little slowly from now on and I'm going to focus on this fic for a while before I go back too' what I used to be', seem as I've moved into my own apartment and I have to work a lot more and my little cousin is staying with me.
Just so you know this fic is also about gang wars as well as Hiei little escapade to fix his friends lives.
Have a good day (or night or whatever),
