To Save a Life
Chapter 2

Hiei watched Natashi on the apartments' small patio watering her plants when she suddenly came in and asked, “Is there supposed to be a three horned goat youkai on the streets.”
Immediately he yanked her inside and closed the door as he stood on the small patio. Sure enough Yomi stood in the middle of the street looking somewhat confused until a woman with short white hair appeared in front of him then he became cautious.
“Damn it Yomi! I'm retired! I can't keep taking you back to Makai anymore!” the woman yelled.
“Hoshi,” Yomi said almost relieved, “It's good to hear you. I don't know-”
“Don't give me that crap!” she snapped, “This is the third time this week you entered Ningenkai in this same area! What are you planning?”
“Nothing-”
“I don't want you back here or anywhere in Ni-Ningenkai…” Hoshi stumbled back and was caught by Aden.
“Aunt Hoshi?” he stopped as he sensed Yomi and quickly took out a kunai, “Stay away!”
Yomi looked at him with fake confusion, “Why do you say that?”
“Aden,” Hoshi said softly once she got her balance back. “What is it?”
“He's after my sister,” he told her softly.
“What?” she raised her left hand for the Shot Gun aiming at Yomi just as Natashi peeked out the kitchen window. “What do you want with my niece?”
“Your niece?” Yomi turned his head in the direction of the window just as Kurama pulled the girl out of view. “Actually I'm looking for a plant user.”
“Not another word, Yomi,” Hoshi told him harshly and fired an energy ball next to Yomi forming a portal. “Take the portal and don't ever come back or else your kingdom will be up for grabs.”
Taking the hint Yomi quietly left and once the portal closed a girl the same age Natashi, literally, came out of one of the trees. She trotted over to Hoshi but stopped, as if sensing, the brown haired girl stopped and turned towards Hiei. At first Hiei thought she was going call out to him but then he saw her eyes start to follow something. Suddenly Hoshi appeared on the patio next to Hiei with the little girl. As if suddenly noticing Hiei Hoshi turned around and stared at him.
“Aunt Hoshi!” Natashi cried as she ran out onto the patio. “Who was that ugly goat?”
“Just an unwanted friend who I never want to see ever again,” she told her as sat the girl in her arm down.
“Hey Yamakaza have you perfected your speech yet?” Natashi teased the other girl.
None of them noticed Hiei and Kurama's eyes widened at seeing the young version of Yamakaza with brown hair instead of dark ember red as she exclaimed, “Shhhud up!”
`Wow,” Kurama thought, `Yamakaza had a speech impediment as a child. With the way she talks now that she's older it's hard to believe that she was this little girl.'
“Who are theesse two?” Yamakaza looked up at Hiei and Kurama.
“Oh, Aunt Hoshi, Yamakaza, these are my guests Hiei and Kurama,” Natashi told them as latched onto Kurama's leg.
Hoshi chuckled as she took off her glasses revealing her right red and left blue eye asked, “Has she made you listen to her collection of `Weird Al' Yankovic songs?”
“Unfortunately,” Kurama answered.
“I like his songs, my brother doesn't.”
“Father still hates you for letting me listen to those songs,” Natashi told her.
“I bet he does,” as she took out a cassette tape and handed it to her.
Natashi suddenly looked at her aunts' stomach she leaned closer and said, “Hi there little one.”
Hoshi looked somewhat surprised and said to Aden who somehow got into the house without them noticing him, “Her abilities still amaze me Aden.”
“Tell me about it, you all are letting the A.C. out,” he told them.
After tea and watching Natashi and Yamakaza wrestle each other as they Kurama talked to Hoshi about her upcoming pregnancy until the two five year olds fell asleep did Hoshi pushed her sunglasses up higher on her nose before pulling out something from her pocket. “Aden, would you be a dear and put the girls into one of the rooms?” she asked Aden.
Aden looked at her with half closed eyes suspiciously before sighing, “I get the hint.”
Kurama and Hiei looked at Hoshi confused as Aden took the sleeping girls to another room. Before Kurama could ask Hoshi held her hand open and there in her palm was Natashi's sapphire ring. “I know you two aren't from this time so don't try to lie to me. Aside from the fact that I'm a foreseer I also know that this ring can take a person anywhere in time but only if they're needed.” At their surprised looks she sighed, “You didn't know this, did you?”
Kurama was finally able to answer, “No, it was stuck on our friends' finger until the day she died-”
“Fool,” she suddenly interrupted.
“Excuse me! I'm-”
“You're a fool because you assume she's died because you watched her fall, I saw it in a vision. Some may say the future is set in stone but it isn't! …Kurama, you can't turn your love to the younger version of the woman that you love.”
Hiei looked at Kurama as he bent his head to hide his eyes.
“My niece is too innocent to understand anything about the world still. With her sensitivity to other peoples' emotion all she wants to do is please to make others happy.”
Hiei looked at Hoshi and asked, “What do we need to do?”
Hoshi was startled by his deep voice, “What?”
“You said the ring can take a person anywhere in time but only if they're need. What are we needed for?”
Getting her bearings she answered, “I don't know, you see the ring seems to be preset for your destination in the future of little Natashi's life, seeing that in the future that she's the owner of the ring. It's very hard to tell with a blue ryu's heart gem.”
“What did you say?” Kurama suddenly asked.
“A blue ryu's heart gem,” she repeated as she raised an eyebrow. “Blue ryus have been hunted down for their scales for centuries hard to believe there are still gems of a ryu giving up its' life for the ones' they love. The clan has been making sure no ryu gems got into the ningens' economy.”
“Do you know whose it is? I mean…the heart,” Kurama asked.
“Well, it's not that old,” Hoshi started, “the last one that died was Shin Li. But her Amazon sister made a part of it into a locket and left the other one rough.” When neither men answered Hoshi held out the ring to Kurama, “Kurama…Hiei, you two need to move on to the next point in time you are needed in.”
“But-”
“Kurama, she's right,” Hiei told Kurama, “We were sent here for a reason but we can't stay. We have to face the cold truth when we return. Besides Takashis will never hold a grudge against you if they know you tried to save them or one of their own.”
“Aunt Hoshi!” they suddenly heard Aden scream. “Natashi! Wake up! Please wake up!”
They ran to the room Aden and the girls were in and found Natashi just laying on her futon. There was no rising of her chest as her cousin Yamakaza, who now was starting to wake up.
Aden looked at them panicked and crying, “She just stopped breathing!”
Since the curtains were open Hoshi took off her sunglasses to reveal her red eye. She looked at the three males and asked frantic, “Did any of you take her swimming?”
“I did,” Kurama answered confused.
“Oh god!” Aden exclaimed.
“Why? What's wrong?”
Hoshi opened Natashi's mouth and summoned her air ki as she answered, “Natashi still has trouble holding her breath when she swims.”
Kurama watched horrified as Hoshi used the air to go into the small child's lungs only to come out swirling around a ball of water. Letting it drop to the floor Hoshi summoned another wave of air ki. After a few seconds Hoshi looked at Aden with tears forming in her eyes and struggled to say, “There's…too much…water. I-I can't…save her…”
Hiei pushed little Yamakaza aside and place his hand over Natashi's chest. After a moment Natashi flipped away from Hiei's hand and coughed up pool water that was trapped in her lungs. Aden fell to his knees relieved that she was alive. Yamakaza was not too happy about being woken up and shoved to the side so she revealed how she felt by kicking Hiei on the ass.
The fire demon glared at the girl who just stuck her tongue out at him not realizing that he could kill her in an instant.
