My eyes fluttered open to the bright sun peeking in through the window of my bedroom; the glimmering light burned so I quickly averted my gaze and cowered in the covers which obtained so much darkness. As I did this my vision now consisted of colorful splotches that decorated the black of the shadows under the blankets.
“Uggh…fucker.” I grumbled I rubbed my eyes as to prevent them from blurring when I got up; I got out of bed, throwing the covers off of me as I went. I was greeted by a cold rush once this was done, I shivered and stood. My raw feet were wonderfully toned with scars and cuts. Small shards of glass covered the floor, I stepped upon them and didn't even wince as I went on, and my feet had become numb to the feeling of glass carving into them. With a loud yawn I stared myself in the mirror, dark circles hung heavy under my eyes, I groaned and smoothed out the hair on the top of my head. I rummaged through my drawers and pulled out my clothing choice for the day. I slipped on a pair of baggy, black pants, a black sleeveless shirt with a big, black hoodie over top. I pulled a black beanie over my crimson hair, so that none was left noticeable, and I placed dark sunglasses over my piercing blue/green eyes.
“Tristan!!!!” I heard the obnoxious groan voice from right outside my door. I cringed at the very sound she made, with a grunt I walked out, I pushed the door to open it but it only went out about a foot.
“Ma!” I snarled, I stuck my head out of the crack I made in the door, my eyes averted to the floor, seeing the curled up heap that was indeed my mother.
“Ma come on move I can't get out dammit!!!”
She rolled over onto her side; I spotted the needle in her hand, clasped tightly between her fingers. I pressed myself out of the room and bent down next to her, tears were dried up on her cheeks, causing her hair to stick to her face. I shook my head and grabbed her arm, placing it around my shoulders as I lugged her off the floor. Her legs wobbled abnormally as she tried desperately to walk to the living room; once we reached down the hall I dropped her onto the couch.
“Tristan!!!” Mom continued to call my name. I leaned over her body, her eyes were glazed over and I could tell she had drugged herself.
“Yeah ma, I'm right here.” I stated, my slightly deep voice cracked a bit throughout this sentence, I hated to see my mother in such a state. Her shaking hand dropped the needle onto the floor, and it clanged against the wood and I followed the object with my eyes. I let it roll away before turning back to my mother.
“I have to go to school ma, you just rest.” I told her, I placed a blanket over her and she passed out within seconds. I wrinkled my nose and grabbed the black, leather back notebook I had claimed to be my own off of the coffee table. I never carried a bag to school; I felt no need when I never did the work, I mean it's not like it applied to me or anything I was planning on doing with my life. I looked back at my mother once more before leaving the house and locking the door behind me, it's not like I believed she could defend herself if someone were to waltz right into the house. Then I made my way down the sidewalk to the school building which I spent most of my days in. I knew I was late, and I didn't quite care either, I took a glimpse at my watch, by the time I arrived I would be at least 20 minutes late.
“Feh. It's not like they care anyway.” I grumbled, my feet made a loud padding noise as I jogged up the many stairs and in through the entrance. The halls were cleared out already aside from the random security guards here and there; I waved to them and went to my classroom.
“Mr. Tristan that's the third time this week that you have been late!” The teacher announced, I shrugged.
“And?” Was all I said before going to my seat and letting the door slam behind me. I walked to the back of the classroom in the far away corner, nearest to the window that is. The few seats around me were empty, I kicked the one in front of me around so that I may prop my feet up in it. Hours passed by that day in a haze as I didn't pay any attention to a single thing any of my teachers said, I spent my time writing in the notebook I carried around since there was nothing else of interest to do.
“Food…” I grumbled as the bell sounded for lunch, I quickly snatched up the notebook and rushed to the cafeteria. I snatched myself a tray and piled stuff on without the idiotic workers knowing that I didn't pay the dollar that I didn't possess. I stomped to my usual table, in the back. My eyes roamed the room and I spotted someone that I hadn't seen before. She had short, brunette hair, glimmering hazel eyes, and she wore dark blue jeans, and a red v-neck shirt.
“Hmmm….new girl.” I mumbled but paid it no mind; it wasn't any of my concern. Everything around me formed into somewhat of a blur, nothing really mattered and all I cared about in the entire room was my food and my notebook.
“Excuse me.”
I looked up to see the new girl standing beside me; I tilted my head to the side while wondering why she was over here and why she was talking to me of all people.
“Can I sit over here?”
She asked, I stared her down for a while but she couldn't see the stern look because of the dark glasses over my eyes. All I did as a response was nod to the chair across from me on the other side of the table, her lips curled into a small smile as she nodded back and went to sit down. We sat in silence, not that I minded, but she squirmed and looked around, becoming irritated and nervous with the lack of conversation. The girl stared at me, watching as I wrote some in my book.
“So you like to write huh?” She inquired. I quickly shut it and leaned back in my chair while crossing my arms over my chest.
“Hn.” I grunted.
“What's your name?” The questions continued to pour out of her mouth. I cocked an eyebrow, why did she want to know my name? No one ever wanted to know my name, let alone want to sit with me.
“Tristan.” I simply replied.
“Oh I like that name, I'm Melissa.”
“Melissa…” I repeated and stroked my chin in thought while looking at her; she nodded with a light pink color creeping up onto her cheeks. Was she blushing? And if so, why?
`Wow he is really cute.' Melissa thought.
“You're new here I take it?”
“Yes. Today is my first day.” She said and shrugged while avoiding eye contact to look around the room.
“I thought so.” Was all I said. I sensed something different about this girl; she didn't have the normal energy any other human person did. Melissa had just a faint drop of demon in her; I could feel it and I could tell she was trying to mask her energy from detection. Just then the bell rang and everyone started to clear the room.
“I should go.” She said and stood, I nodded and watched her as she left and vanished into the crowd of people. I grabbed my book and followed the mob as well as we all retreated back to class.
School ended within the span of a few hours and I walked down the sidewalk back to my house, I could only imagine what would be waiting for me when I got there. Was my mom going to be conscious? Was she going to be passed out still on the couch where I left her? Or my personal favorite, was she going to be stabbing the needle into her system while screaming about seeing demons and angels?
“Tristan!!!!” I heard my name being called and turned to see the girl Melissa running towards me while waving. She then reached me and smiled.
“Hey.”
“Ummm….hi.” I said in a bored tone, and the same color of pink once more shaded her face, making it look like a tomato.
“Is there something you need?” I asked her.
“No, I was just wondering of sometime this week you wanna hang out or something.” She said and made small gesticulations with her hands. I was surprised she had asked such a thing of me, this girl was bold, not that it was a bad thing.
“Sure, maybe.” I replied, she nodded with the same smile on her face.
“Ok great I am holding you to that.” Melissa stated, “Well bye!” She added and waved once more before she scurried off again. I blinked and shrugged before reaching my house; I cracked my knuckles and braced myself for what was to come when I entered the small building. I walked up the steps and pushed the door open, and to my surprise my favorite event was taking place.
“Mom!!!” I called.
“Tristan!!!!! Get in here!!!!” I ran over to see her sitting on the tile floor of the kitchen and leaning up against the cabinets. She was no longer crying or groveling, but oh look there was the needle embedded into her veins. My mother held it there and cackled as she hunched over.
“Oh mom.” I whispered and shook my head; she looked up to me, her caramel eyes burning into my skull.
“They told me to do it!!! They told me that it would help and they were right honey they were so right hahahaha!!!!!!! He told me you would just watch like that he told me all you would do is stand there I told you he is always right!!!! ALWAYS!!!” She screamed at me, her smirk turning into that of a disgusted scowl. I shook my head and ran over to her, kneeling down at her side, she had injected the drug into her system but had yet to pull the point out of her flesh. I wrapped my hand around hers and managed to pull it out, she yelped and growled as I threw the needle to the side and noticed her arm was purple where the needle used to be.
“Dammit mom what the fuck are you trying to do?!?!?” I yelled, she grabbed at me, slapping, punching, and clawing at me in order to get to the drugs once more.
“Gah!!!”
“Give them back to me I need them I need them he says that I need them give it back to me!!!” She cried out for me to hand them back to her. I held her down and pinned her to the cabinets by her wrists.
“Hey mom listen to me, stop listening to whoever the fuck he is!!!”
She continued to glare at me and only thrashed about some more.
“He told me you would do this you want to ruin me, you want to stop it!!! You can't stop it, you just can't you aren't good enough! You just aren't and you never will be kid. Maybe you should listen to him sometimes!!!!!! Now give them back to me DAMN YOU!!!!!” I snarled and threw her to the floor, letting go of her wrists in the process, she stared up at me and I glared down at her.
“I can't listen to him mom because he isn't there!!!!” I snapped and then stormed out of the room; as soon as I was out of sight she struggled over and picked up the needle again. I slammed the door to my room and threw my hoodie and hat off as I fell onto my bed.
“DAMMIT!!!” I screamed into the pillow and then sat up, leaning on the wall with my arms crossed over my chest.
Melissa was now going back to her place which was Genkai's temple in the middle of the forest. She reached the building and after trudging up the many steps she entered, seeing the gang gathered around in the living room.
“What's going on?” She asked them and set her back down on the floor, walking over she saw Boton with the spirit detective brief case which was open. On the screen inside was Koenma and he was just staring at her.
“New mission?”
“Yeah he just now mentioned it.” Melissa nodded and sat down on the couch beside Yusuke, Kurama was on the other side of Yusuke. Kuwabara was sitting in the love seat, and Hiei was leaning against the wall in the far corner.
“Well now that you are all here I can explain what your new mission is.” They nodded and sat waiting in silence as the toddler cleared his throat.
“Alright then, I need you all to find a boy, he is a very powerful demon and lives not too far from here, in fact he goes to your new school Melissa, which is why we transferred you there.” He explained, she arched her brow.
“Oh?”
Koenma nodded and on the screen popped up the picture of me, her jaw dropped as she pointed but she couldn't utter a single word.
“His name is Tristan and he is a fire kitsune.”
“What?!?!” This caused everyone to turn to Melissa in confusion.
“Hn. What the hell are you yelling about baka?” Hiei asked with his eyes narrowing down at her.
“I know him, Tristan, I met him today, there's no way he can be a demon I didn't sense anything coming from him.” She said. Koenma chewed and sucked on his pacifier like a vacuum cleaner.
“As I said before he is a very powerful demon so that means he can completely mask his energy so that no can sense it, but since you met him that makes our job a lot easier.”
“What job? What does it have to do with him?” She continued to question, but at least she was beginning to calm down from her more shocked state.
“Tristan is wanted by many demons in Makai, I need you to introduce him to the team and you all need to convince him to come onto our side, he needs to be with us at all times.”
“Why do we need to convince him?” Kurama asked.
“He is an important asset. With him on our side we won't have to worry about enemies coming over and trying to take him and put him on their side. They want him so that they can use his power to exterminate everything, and in doing a background check on this boy I sense it will be hard to get him to join us.”
“How so?”
“Many things have occurred in his lifetime but it is not my place to say, if you want to figure all of this out you must get the job done.” Koenma finally said before the screen went black. The boys glanced at one another and then looked to Melissa.
“Wow I had no idea.” Was all she said.
“Do you think you could get him to join?” Yusuke asked, she shrugged and shook her head.
“Hard to say, he is kind of like Hiei. Real quiet, but I will figure it out.” Melissa responded, confidence shown in her tone of voice.
