Secrets, such a difficult concept, but it was what Yusuke Urameshi lived by, he refused to think of himself as a cold liar, one that never breathes the truth. If it were up to him, he would have told someone, anyone, years ago, it was his mother. She was the one who straight up said he could tell no one about her, she didn't want him to even know about her in the first place, but he did, and that was that. It was one of those few days he would think about the morning Atsuko informed him of his younger sister. Perhaps, if this little piece of information were to be kept unknown, he would be a lot less curious. He was brought up as an only child, no other siblings to play with, it was merely him. Yusuke found out the truth when he was at least 10 years old, not all that intelligent, but smart enough to know what it meant.
“What would happen if I never knew the truth?”
He asked himself this question a lot, he was sworn to secrecy by his mother, and Atsuko was in full belief that if anyone knew it would only cause more issues. Yusuke glared at the clouds that were floating by in the bright, periwinkle blue sky. He was lying upon the school roof, skipping Algebra, as usual, his deep brown eyes held confusion, but also rage.
“Yeah Ma, you tell me all about her,” Yusuke began, laying his arms folded behind his resting head, “but you don't let me see her, what a load of bull.”
Not even the team knew about her, whether Koenma had any idea, he didn't know, and didn't much care either, just as long as he didn't blab about it. Just at that very time, he heard that familiar gruff voice coming from the platform below him, he recognized it as the `infamous' Kuwabara.
“Up here Kuwabara.” Yusuke merely stated, the tall, orange haired boy looked up.
“There you are Urameshi, you skipping again? You know Kayko is starting to get worried again…and well you know how that goes.”
He hardly made an effort to get up from his sanctuary, he didn't intend on going to class, whether Kayko was upset or not.
“Well now you know where I am, you can tell her and she wont be worried anymore.”
Kuwabara narrowed his eyes at the inconsiderate Spirit Detective, Yusuke felt himself being and watched and sat up, looking down at him.
“What?!” He snapped.
“What's wrong with you lately, you are a lot more distant then usual Urameshi!”
“Nothing, now leave me alone Kuwabara.”
Yusuke turned away from him, staring off into the bleak distance; he wasn't in the mood to be bothered by nonsense, sure he cared about Kayko, but at this point he was too worked up in his own important thoughts.
“I don't get it Urameshi, what's the deal?!”
He was being quite persistent, Yusuke closed his eyes and his brow twitched the mere sound of his friends voice was beginning to strike his nerves.
“You don't need to get it, it's nothing.”
“Yeah…whatever.”
Kuwabara shoved his hands into his blue pockets, walking back down the stairs and into the building. Yusuke was not concerned, however, the memories flooded back to him like running water, drowning him in his own dark thoughts. The vague stories that Atsuko spoke of about his estranged younger sibling, remembering only bits and pieces, it had been said that she was partially insane, but Yusuke wasn't sure what to believe. He had always wanted to meet her, see what she was really like, so he could decipher the fiction from the reality.
`Who are you really?'
Yusuke had not been given her name; he would spend a few hours everyday or so, contemplating what it could possibly be. Anna, Yuki, Serena, anything that popped into his mind, he would try and piece it together with her possible looks. He had not seen pictures either, his mother kept nothing of the sort lying around, he had already checked. The bell that signaled school was over, rang violently in his ears, he grunted and jumped onto the lower platform of the roof, moving to the wire fence surrounding the edges. Yusuke observed everyone as they ran out of the school building, chatting, giggling, and scampering around as they busied with their friends.
`Are you right under my nose?'
Atsuko also never told him where she was located, so he wondered everyday, if she could have possibly been going to the same school as him. These thoughts tormented his mind, so he decided to push them aside for a while; he made his way down to ground level. In an attempt to clean himself of these internal problems, he headed to the arcade instead of to the temple, or to his own home. Yusuke plopped himself in the seat of a racing game, and got into it quickly enough, his eyes glazed over all of the random girls standing around. By some odd sensation he began to picture what they would be like as his sister, but then shook his head.
“What the hell?!” Yusuke cursed himself, he reminded himself of one of those overly obsessive family members, adopted out of a home, and searching for their real parents to try and discover themselves. After losing the game, he was fed up and left the place, storming back home, maybe if he demanded some answers the woman would finally talk.
“HEY MOM!!!” Yusuke slammed the door open, rage coursed through his veins, bubbling in his crimson blood. The not yet drunk adult came in from the kitchen; she had a cup of tea settled in her hand, obviously in a calm mood.
“What is it now Yusuke?”
“You told me when I was 10; you told me and didn't think I would get pissed about it later!!!”
She immediately realized what he was getting at; she had for a long time knew that this time was going to come around. The boy was so hard headed he didn't know when to give up on something he never had in the first place.
“Well actually kid, I thought you would have gone on this rampage a lot earlier.”
Yusuke blinked, his clenched fists coming undone.
“You wanna know more about that girl? Is that it?”
“Yeah I want to know more about that girl, that girl that's my sister!”
Yusuke growled he didn't feel the need to stay calm; he had been calm for years, holding back on asking anymore questions.
“That freak, I refuse to call that freak your sister, she has nothing to do with me or you, no matter what you believe!”
“She's my blood, and I'm hers' what the hell do you mean it has nothing to do with me?!”
Atsuko dropped her mug of chamomile tea, pieces of glass shattered to the floor, some scraping against her bare feet.
“You don't get it and you never will, she was 1 year old when I sent her to stay with your dumbass father, she was crazy, and she almost hurt you a few times, that girl is insane, I heard stories as she grew up!”
“Why can't I ever meet her?!”
“Because she's crazy, if you were to ever get close to that thing you would be hurt, and you're all I've got, I have no pictures of her, nor do I want any, I don't know her name because it doesn't mean a thing to me, so stop asking questions Yusuke!!!”
His mother stormed into the other room, wincing barely as shards of glass pierced into her foot, Yusuke's eyes were wide as he heard Atsuko speak these words. He could not even fathom how a mother could despise her own child that much, but none the less, he still wanted more answers.
`My ma knows just as much as I do…nothing'
He cursed again, if he weren't in his apartment right this moment, he would have shot his spirit gun just to blow off the remaining steam. Instead he ran out, he had this pang in his heart, as if he wanted to cry, but he didn't. Yusuke walked to the temple, most of the anger had washed away by the time he arrived, he slid the doors open and entered without a word, heading to the kitchen for a can of beer.
“Yusuke?”
Kurama whispered, his emerald eyes held concern for his friend as he slumped over the counter, sipping at his beer with a distasteful look on his face. He could practically smell Yusuke's sadness wafting through the air, so he went to hopefully go provide some comfort for him.
“Hello Yusuke, how was your day?”
“Average.” Yusuke quickly answered in a monotone voice.
“Ah, I see, Kuwabara told me that you seemed a little upset about something, care to tell me why?”
“Not really.” He answered quickly once more, Kurama was not offended, he shrugged it off, knowing that he was sad about something. It was common for Yusuke to act in such a way when he was feeling out of the ordinary, what ever ordinary was in his case.
“Everyone is worried about you; we could help if you need it.”
“Well I don't, look Kurama I don't need a stupid pep talk, I just want you be alone.”
“Yusuke, you have changed over the last few weeks, you have friends who are worried about you, and you refuse to tell us what's wrong.”
Yusuke jumped from his seat, slamming the can onto the counter, a loud clanging echoed through the room.
“Even if I could tell you, there wouldn't be a point Kurama, you just don't get it!”
He was endowed in his belief that telling them would make no difference, but it was of no use even speaking about it, he was after all sworn to secrecy.
“Well it is sad that you think that.”
Kurama stated, disappointment lingering in his voice as he said this. By this time an audience had gathered into the living room, so they had seen the entire show, Kuwabara was even chomping on a bag of popcorn.
“Umm…Boys.”
Botan stuttered, trying to get a word in before Yusuke blew his cap, his emotions fluttered around the room like angry butterflies. Hiei was watching but didn't give a damn about the current situation, as far as he was concerned it wasn't his problem, and he didn't need to deal with it.
“What is it, can't I just be left alone?!”
He was desperate for some secluded peace and quiet, but apparently if he was even a tad pissed off about something, the papers needed to be informed.
“Sorry to interrupt such an important discussion Yusuke, I wanted to end this before it became a war.”
She explained, pointing her finger up knowingly, Yusuke growled.
“Well sorry, but I didn't ask to be interviewed!!!”
He snapped, his words spewing out like acid, he cracked his knuckles.
“I need to let off some steam, maybe I can use one of your faces to help me with that!!!”
“Yusuke, just because you are having some problems right now doesn't mean you have to take it out on the people who want to help you!!!”
“Help me?!” His voice became louder as he spoke, “You don't even know what the problem is, and I am not going to tell you dammit!!!”
As if on queue, Botan's compact rang, shooting a glare towards Yusuke she flipped it open, seeing Koenma's fat, baby face crowding the screen.
“Yes Koenma sir?”
“Botan, you and the boys get down here right away, I have a new mission for them, and it could be of great importance to one of the members.”
“Yes sir, we will be there shortly.”
Botan closed it back up and stared at the boys; they had heard the screaming prince and merely nodded. She formed a portal out of thin air, they all leapt through, and landing once more in the office they had spent practically their entire life in. Yusuke was not going to be the first to speak this time, he was hardly prepared to crack a mean joke, or even yell at the child for making them come in too many times.
“So, Koenma, what is this new mission?”
Kurama spoke up, noticing Yusuke's lack of participation. The toddler sucked frantically on his large pacifier, looking up at the boys in urgency.
“Oh yes right, I need you to rescue a young girl, she is being held in the pits of demon world and has been there for some time now, only I lack a picture of her, and I do not know her name.”
“So you brought us down to hunt some unknown chick?”
Yusuke snarled, his R&R had been cut off because this prince of spirit world needed some random girl to be saved, not only that but he had not idea who she was.
“I wouldn't talk like that Yusuke, considering this mission affects you more then it does the rest of the team.”
“What do you mean?” He questioned, crossing his arms over his chest, slightly annoyed that he wouldn't hurry and get to the point.
“Since you were 10 you knew about this girl, your mother told you…am I correct?”
His eyes widened, then immediately narrowed, advancing towards the desk his tolerance level completely vanished, now wasn't the time to be beating around the bush.
“How do you know about her diaper ass?!”
“I have known about her for a long time Yusuke, only a bit longer then you have, only I have not taken it to heart like you.”
“Give me answers!”
Yusuke demanded, slamming his clenched fists on the desk before his boss.
“Come on now spit it out!”
“Yusuke….I know even less then you, I was not given the stories that your mother gave you, I tried to look up all I could on her, nothing was found, she must have been hidden well throughout the years, if you wish to know anything more about her, then you have to find and meet her yourself.”
It was surprising that even the highest powers in spirit world knew nothing about his younger sister; they were supposed to know everything, weren't they?
“Who are you guys talkin' about?”
Kuwabara asked, stupidity was eminent all over his face, the expression he wore screamed confusion.
“Hn. If I am forced to go on this damn mission I want to know what the hell is going on!”
Hiei spat, his ruby eyes burning into the back of Yusuke's head; there was a long silence as none of them said a word.
“It is up to you to tell them Yusuke; it is your secret, and your mother's.”
“I know that!”
Yusuke thought on this for a few more minutes, eyes closed as the many possibilities flooded in his brain.
“Who is this girl Yusuke?”
Kurama asked politely, hoping not to add onto Yusuke's annoyance. Although, he was still not fully confident in telling them the truth just yet, he wasn't sure how they would react to it.
“I'll tell you guys later,” Yusuke stated, “Now toddler, where is she?”
The prince took this small amount of time to calculate some coordinates on his computer, the map forming on the large screen before them.
“In the western lands, she is being held in a small fortress, it is oddly shaped…much like a large potato.”
“Haha that's hysterical, go on!”
“Right well, it is quite hard to miss, you should know how to find her Yusuke, she has a spirit energy that much resembles yours, except for a bit of demon energy mixed in so don't let that confuse you.”
“Demon…she's…”
“Yes, she is a demon Yusuke that was the only information I could dig up on her, so look carefully, I think you will know her when you see her.”
He slowly nodded his head.
`Heh. That explains why mom called her a freak all the time.'
Tiny bits of the puzzle were beginning to form together, finally, into something that made sense, now he at least knew she was still alive, and that she was in demon world instead of right under his nose like he pictured. Also, he partially knew the cause of his mother's hatred towards her, but he needed more, and the only way to fill in the remaining gaps was to meet her in person.
“She is the only one who can answer my questions.”
“WHO?!?!” Kuwabara's voice rose, his arms flailed around in the air. In a flash Yusuke was in his face, anger flaming in his dark eyes.
“I said I'll tell you later! Or are you too stupid you didn't get that memo!?!?”
Kurama took a step between the two bickering team members; at this point Yusuke was capable of turning any argument into a life or death matter.
“Alright, later, now I say we go find this girl before something else happens to her, who knows what she is going through down there.”
This stuck in the older brother's mind; perhaps the protective gene was kicking in.
“Right….c'mon.”
He glared at Kurama, sending him the message that they needed a portal leading to demon world; he read it loud and clear and formed one before their eyes. There was no hesitation as Yusuke leapt through, the others following suit.
