Chapter Eighteen: Questions

Kaline's POV

Something was bothering Cassie, and since she wasn't going to tell me, I decided to go talk to the last person she had been with. Jin had to have a good idea about why my best friend was so upset. If he didn't know, I would go ask some of the girls.

Luckily, Jin was easy to find. He was on the front porch, staring at the blue sky. I smiled as I approached him, remembering what I had seen through the living room window. 'Jin and Cassie looked so cute while they were eating their picnic lunch. It's really too bad that Cassie's a human, Jin's a demon, and she only seems to like him as a friend.'

"Hey, Jin," I greeted him, giving him a smile when he turned to look at me. "I've got a question for you."

"Oh... what?" he asked in his Irish accent.

"Cassie's rather angry at the moment. Could you enlighten me any as to why she is this way?" I inquired, sitting down next to him.

Jin shifted uncomfortably, as if he really didn't want to tell me. "I... kissed her," he finally admitted. "She didn't like that."

"So what happened to her door? Someone kicked it down, but she won't tell me who," I wondered, leaving the subject of him kissing Cassie for later.

"I doan't know, Kaline," he answered honestly, shrugging his shoulders. "When she went inside, I stayed out here."

"Can you think of anyone who might know?" I asked, hoping that I would get a good answer.

Jin stayed silent for a moment, appearing reluctant to say anything. There was something he didn't want to tell me, and I had a feeling that I was going to have to pry it from him.

"Why don't you tell me what happened after you kissed her?" I wasn't going to drop the subject, although I could tell that Jin really wanted me to do just that.

"She told me not to kiss her again without her permission," he replied, obviously planning on leaving it like that.

I sighed. "She was fuming when I saw her, and you kissing her would not have put her in that kind of mood," I told him. "I know Cassie well enough to know that." I gave him the 'you're not telling me everything and I know it, so you'd better start talking' look.

Once again, Jin seemed to debate with himself on whether or not he wanted to tell me. Frowning, he studied me for a moment, trying to see if I would become angry if he refused to respond. Finally, he opened his mouth to answer, but he never got a chance to say anything.

Cassie slammed the front door open and interrupted Jin to speak with me. "Kaline, I need to talk to you right now," she told me. "I have something I want to ask you."

"Oh... um, okay," I responded, surprised. Taking one last look at Jin, I followed Cassie into the house. I could have stayed with Jin and gotten an answer out of him, but although the wind demon knew some of what had happened, Cassie knew it all.

Cassie led me to her room, closing and locking the door once we were inside. Obviously she didn't want to be overheard or interrupted. How very interesting.

"So, what is it that you want to ask me?" I inquired, sitting down on the edge of the bed.

She sat down on the other bed, crossing her legs. "Do demons' eyes ever glow?"

"WHAT?!" I about died from a heart attack right then and there. 'Why did she ask that? Had she seen a demon's eyes glow, or had just heard someone talk about it?' I took a deep breath, doing my best to calm my heart. "Why are you asking me this?"

"You're half demon," Cassie explained simply. "You're going out with a demon. You hang out with demons. If anyone knows the answer to my question, it's you." She paused. "Now, will you please answer the question?"

I bit the inside of my cheek, feeling nervous. The question wasn't one I really wanted to answer. Of course, Cassie was my best friend, and if I didn't answer her, she would probably go and as one of the others. "Yes, they can glow," I finally replied, sounding a little reluctant.

"Why?" she wanted to know. "If a demon's eyes glows at times, then there must be some reason as to why."

"Never you mind," I told her curtly, my face going red from embarrassment. I wasn't going to answer that question. After all, I really couldn't tell my friend that demons' eyes glowed whenever they were horny. There was just some things Cassie didn't need to know.

I had learned a year ago exactly what caused a demon's eyes to glow. Last summer, while Kurama and I had been on the yacht, I had gone into 'heat' which had caused Kurama's demonic nature to surface. He had tried to push our relationship a little farther than I had wanted it to go.

Of course, there was no way I was going to tell Cassie about that little incident. No one knew except for Kurama and myself, and that was how I was going to keep it.

"Kaline... c'mon," Cassie half-pleaded. "You know that you can tell me anything."

'Anything?' I silently laughed. 'Tell her that Kurama and I had nearly had a wedding night without the wedding? I don't think so.'

I shook my head. "Nope. I will carry the secret to my grave."

"Well, if you won't tell me, then I'll just have to ask Yukina or Kurama," she countered, giving me a devilish smile. "I'm sure that one of them will tell me, but if neither of them do, I'll just ask Hiei and Jin."

Once again, I nearly had a heart attack. 'Ask Hiei! Is she insane?!' I spent of a few moments calming down my heart, quickly deciding that it was better for me to tell her than any of the others.

"Cassie," I began, nervously biting my bottom lip for a brief moment. "They glow when a demon is..." I paused to think of the best way to phrase it. "Sexually aroused."

It was Cassie's turn to almost die of a heart attack. She nearly fell back, and her eyes were very wide. Her shocked look faded after a minute or so, leaving a devious look on her face.

I immediately decided that I didn't want to know what was going through her head.
