Chapter Twenty-Three: Revenge
Kaline's POV
"Well, well, well," a creepy voice said from all around me. I couldn't see anyone in the area, and the fog wasn't helping at all. "It's the half-breed that was never supposed to exist."
"Who's there?" I called out, glancing at everything around me, looking for whoever was talking. I knew that I was dreaming, but the voice and location that I was at were unnerving. "Show yourself." I could feel evil magic all around me, just a slight glimmer that seemed to be integrated into the fog.
The voice laughed, ignoring my order. "I will soon enough, you little brat. You needn't worry about that." The voice paused to chuckle. "What you really should worry about is what I'm going to do to you once I show myself."
The amount of evil magic increased to an almost unbearable level, causing my dream self to shake and making it hard to breath. "You can't scare me, you idiotic jerk!" I spat out.
The voice only chuckled cruelly again. "When we finally meet, you... will... DIE!"
I sat up in bed, my eyes wide, my magic sparkling about me in a protective shield. The room was dark, the only light coming from my magic and from the moonlight shining through the window.
Frowning, I dispelled my magical barrier that I had somehow put up during my nightmare. In addition to that, I tried to force my heart to slow and my body to relax.
'Annoying nightmare,' I thought as I climbed out of bed. I wanted to walk around a little. 'Probably only dreamt that 'cause I spent so much time thinking of a way to get back at Kurama. That is what I get for thinking of revenge before I go to bed.'
I sighed and looked over at Kurama. He looked so peaceful in his sleep that I couldn't help but smile briefly at him. It seemed that the more time I spent with Kurama, the more I came to love him.
Instantly, I was hit with the desire to crawl in bed with him for comfort. My body still hadn't fully relaxed after the nightmare, and Kurama's presence always had a calming affect on me. So, after a moment, I gave into the temptation, pulling back the covers and slipping in beside him.
I snuggled close to the fox demon, placing my hands on his muscular chest. Taking a few deep breaths of his clean, pleasant scent, I gave a small sigh of contentment. At that moment, I could think of no better place to be.
In his sleep, Kurama shifted to put an arm around me, and then he drew me closer. Even when unconscious, he knew I was there and wanted comfort. I didn't know how he knew, but he somehow obviously knew. That, or just sensed my presence and wanted to cuddle.
A small smile on my face, I buried my head in the crook of neck. With one last, happy thought, I fell back asleep. 'This is where I belong.'
I woke up sometime in the morning to someone rubbing my back in soothing circles. It was a wonderful sensation, and I almost went back to sleep because of it. Instead of giving into the desire, I opened one of my eyes to find Kurama watching me.
"Good morning, love," he greeted me pleasantly, his green eyes sparkling.
"Morning," I replied, yawning. "What time is it?"
"Nine. You slept in a little," he replied, moving his hand to lightly and slowly caress my cheek. "Now, what was with the climbing in my bed?" He was teasing me, I could tell. The playful sparkle in those emerald orbs of him told me everything.
"You're just that irresistible," I teased back, giving him a sweet smile. "And besides, I was getting tired of sleeping alone."
"Oh really?" He pressed his lips to mine in a quick kiss. "So why did it take you so long to realize that?" Kurama nibbled on my ear for a moment, obviously enjoying the little sounds I made.
Trying my best to concentrate on what I wanted to say, I twirled a strand of Kurama's hair around my fingers. "Actually, I had a nightmare, and I just couldn't think of a better way to get to sleep. You're the only one who has ever been able to comfort me so easily."
"Hmmm..." The fox demon thought on that for a few minutes. "Then will there be a repeat of all this tonight?" He raised an eyebrow at me, his smile infectious.
I rolled my eyes. "You are insufferable!" I gave Kurama a brief kiss, wiggling out of his grasp and sliding out of the bed. "Now you stay here and be good while I go get changed." With a flirtatious smile, I gathered up my clothes and went into the bathroom.
Emerging from the bathroom a few minutes later, I saw that Kurama was sitting on his bed, fully dressed as well in a navy blue, button-down, short-sleeved shirt and a pair of jeans.
"You look nice, although I think you'd look better in those plaid shorts you wore to bed last night," I commented deviously, and I nearly smacked myself a moment later for that. 'Crap,' I thought, mentally frowning. 'Cassie must have rubbed off on me a little too much.'
"Oh, you do, huh?" Kurama stood up and walked over to me, a strange look in his eyes. He was going to do something to me, like tickle me for a while. His playful mood had just completely surged forth, bringing an interesting facet to our little exchange.
"Ahhh..." I paused, looking around for an escape route. The only thing I could see was the door, and Kurama was standing in between it and me. I was planning on running because chases were so much fun. "Yep!" I bolted right then, ducking under one of the kitsune's arms and sprinted towards the door. I flung the door open and went almost flying down the hall.
"Come back here, Kaline!" he shouted after me, his tone playful. I could hear him following after me at a slightly slower pace.
Smiling, I ran into the living room, casting a quick spell above the door as I did so. Kurama was going to be in for a surprise when he entered the room.
I waited about thirty seconds for the fox demon to show up. When he walked through the doorway, a bucket of orange juice flipped over, spilling the sticky liquid all over him. His red hair got soaked, and his shirt became two shades darker.
Laughing, I walked up to him. "That was for dropping me into the ocean with all my clothes on," I informed him, giving him a quick kiss and tasting orange juice. "And don't worry. I could have done something worse." I licked my lips to get the feel of the drink off of them.
"So... you thought that you would get revenge by soaking me with this?" he said, giving me a devious look. "Well, how would you like to share in my fate just a little?" Before I could react, I felt something cold get dumped all over me. It flowed through my hair, soaked my clothes, and even pooled at my feet.
"Kurama..." I playfully growled, trying my best to sound dangerous. I merely managed to sound like I was flirting. "I'm gonna get you for that!"
I tackled the fox demon right then, using all the skills I had to try and pin him down. Kurama attempted to do the same to me, and soon, the both of us were having a very interesting wrestling match in the middle of the living room.
Sometime in the middle of our 'battle', another person walked in on us. "Dare I ask what is going on?" Koenma said, his voice of the verge of breaking into a laugh.
I would have jumped up if Kurama hadn't been on top of me at that moment. "No, and I would rather you not laugh at us," I told him curtly, even though I knew that he wouldn't listen to me.
"You have to admit that this is rather funny," the son of King Yama countered, smiling. "I've never seen two lovers have wrestling wars before, and I thought that you two would be the last ones to do it."
Rolling my eyes, I tried to wiggle out from underneath Kurama, but I soon figured out that moving like that hadn't been a good idea. "Well, I'm going to go take a shower now. I'll see you boys in a little bit." Calling upon my magic, I teleported out of the room, but not before setting up a spell that soaked Kurama in grape juice a millisecond after I had left.
