Chapter Thirty-One: Announcement
Kaline's POV
I wrapped Kurama's arms tighter around me as I rested my back against his chest. We were both in the sunroom and alone, thank goodness. The kitsune and I were both sitting in one of the lounging chairs with me placed on the redhead's lap. I was very comfortable, and I had no intention of moving any time soon.
Of course, since I had spent the last few hours incredibly pissed, everyone except for Kurama had done his or her best to avoid me. That had definitely been a smart move on their parts. I was not pleasant to be around when I was in a rage.
About half an hour ago, my anger had faded with the spell I had placed on Hiei. That was the nice thing about my magic; I could make it do just about anything I wanted. There were serious limits though. I had a very finite amount of power, and it usually took time for me to use my magic.
For the little fire demon's actions concerning Cassie, I had cast an interesting little spell on him. In a fit of rage, I had slapped him, using my power to keep the pain there as well as increase it over time. The pain would have continued to become worse and spread until either he had gone insane or Cassie had forgiven him. Hiei had been very lucky; Cassie had forgiven him.
Once I had felt my spell disappear, my anger had faded. I had figured that if Cassie could forgive him, then so could I. Did that mean that I was going to apologize to Hiei for slapping him? Hell no. The idiot had earned it.
After I had fully calmed down, Kurama and I had talked about a few things... like our engagement. Strangely enough, we both wanted to elope, and we had decided on tomorrow. Heck, we were both in one of the most romantic places in the world. Why not take advantage of it?
There was only one question: Where in the world would we go for our honeymoon? We were already in Hawaii, and I couldn't think of a more romantic place. The fox demon had suggested Antarctica, but I had quickly vetoed that option. I didn't like the cold, and I had no desire to freeze my butt off. Of course, he had promised that I wouldn't become cold. It didn't take a rocket scientist to guess what he was hinting at.
After a little while, Kurama moved an arm and reached up to rub one of my cat ears. I had yet to change back to my human form, but I wasn't sure why. As soon as I began to purr, I realized the reason. I liked having my cat ears rubbed.
'Hmmm.... note to self: change into demon form more often.' I relaxed and leaned my head back on Kurama's shoulder, nuzzling his neck a little.
"So, love, when are we going to inform our friends that we're eloping tomorrow?" he inquired, his breath warm on my ear.
I shrugged slightly. "Don't know; don't care. Whenever we get around to it," I responded softly, my eyes half-closed. After expending so much angry energy for so long, I was tired. It wasn't exactly exhaustion, but it was close enough. I wasn't use to storming about for such an extended period of time. My body hadn't quite been conditioned for it. Small outbursts? Yes. Huge temper tantrums? No.
"We could do it at supper," Kurama told me, a hand sneaking under the hem of my shirt to rest on the bare skin of my stomach.
"I'm not sure if everyone will be there. Cassie and Hiei might decide to skip it." A year ago, I would have removed the kitsune's hand and told him to stop. Over the course of the year, I had changed. That, or Cassie had been rubbing off of my more than I had thought. The latter seemed more likely than the former. Whatever the reason, I allowed Kurama's hand to remain under my shirt.
He chuckled. "We could, too." The suggestion in his voice was impossible to mistake. It was a flat-out invitation. Unfortunately for him, it was an invitation that I had to refuse, at least at the moment.
"Kurama!" I exclaimed, pretending to be scandalized. I was used to his... comments, and they no longer shocked me. But still, feigning tramatization was fun.
"Is something wrong, love?" His hand crept up a little farther.
I smiled demurely as I wiggled a little in his lap, acting as if I was trying to become more comfortable. "I don't think so."
It seemed like we were going to have a repeat of this morning's actions, not that I really minded. Honestly, that sounded like fun.
Moving until I was straddling Kurama's waist, I placed my hands on his muscular chest. I placed a lingering, soft kiss on his neck right above the collar of his shirt. I kissed my way up his neck, ending up at his mouth. Our tongues slowly dueled, enjoying the action. His hands slowly inched their way up from my hips to the sides of my ribcage.
Soon, however, I ended up pulling off the kitsune's shirt and tossing it on the floor. My lips traveled to his bare chest, trailing feathery kisses all over his smooth skin. I was slowly working my way back up to his mouth when someone interrupted the intimate moment.
"Kaline, Kurama, supper's rea-" The words in Botan's throat died at the sight of Kurama and me. "Um... sorry. I didn't mean to... ah... disturb you two while you were... busy." The ferry girl blushed the brightest red I had ever seen and high-tailed it out of the room.
I laughed, very much amused. "Poor, Botan," I commented, a sparkle in my eyes. "I think we scarred her for life."
"We? YOU are the one straddling my lap, stripping off my clothes, and kissing me," Kurama retorted teasingly.
"And YOU are letting me do all of it." I rubbed the tip of my nose against his, smiling. "So you most definitely are partially to blame."
Giving a small sigh, I climbed off of him. I was hungry, and I wanted to eat. To get food, I would have to leave the sunroom, and that meant getting off of my fiancé.
"We'll continue this later. I wanna eat now," I told him. "Besides, we gotta tell everyone our little plans."
"What do we do about Cassie and Hiei if they are not there?" Kurama inquired as he put his shirt back on, curiosity in his voice.
I shrugged. "Then we tell them later. Sound like a good idea?"
The kitsune nodded his head, and then he put an arm around my waist, leading me out of the sunroom.
We went into the dining room, finding everyone but Hiei and Cassie there. Tons of Chinese food decorated the table, barely leaving room for the plates and glasses, which had already been set out.
"It's good to see that you two could join us," Yusuke commented in his normal, rude tone.
"Yes, it most certainly is. I was beginning to think that you two were too busy kissing to spend time with the rest of us," Koenma said teasingly.
I blushed. "Enough," I ordered, although everyone ignored me.
"Are you going to have some food, or are you going to try and 'eat' Kurama?" the raven-haired spirit detective wanted to know.
"Yusuke Urameshi!" Keiko shouted, slapping him. "That was un-called for!"
The kitsune just laughed and leaned down to whisper in my ear. "That's a good question, love, don't you think?" He paused long enough to watch my blush deepen. "Are you going to answer it?"
I growled at the redhead, although I sounded more playful than dangerous. "Don't even go there," I jokingly snapped. "Or else I might just take a leaf out of Keiko's book and smack you."
"Yesterday I would have said that you were bluffing, but after this morning... I'm not so sure." He wasn't serious, and I knew it. His smile gave him away.
"You two are fun to watch," Kuwabara suddenly commented, spoiling the mood.
I turned to glare at the carrot-top, annoyed. He was eating, his eyes on Kurama and me. "What was that, Kuwabaka?" I demanded to know, calling up some of my spirit energy.
His eyes suddenly became much wider. "Nothing, Kaline! Absolutely nothing!" He looked a little scared. I felt a little bit guilty, but not too much. He had asked for it.
"Good." I smiled, pleased with his answer. "Now, I'm gonna eat. Skipping breakfast was not one of my best ideas."
Botan frowned. "Why did you do that?" She sounded a little worried.
Taking a seat, I spooned some rice onto my plate. "I was so furious that I couldn't even think of eating." I shrugged. "My appetite's returned now that I'm no longer angry."
"That's really good," Yukina commented pleasantly, a sweet smile on her face.
"Well then, since you're not pissed off, maybe you can tell all of us about that ring on your finger." Botan pointed to my engagement ring.
"Kaline and I are getting married tomorrow," Kurama explained for me.
Almost everyone in the room fell over. Touya, for some reason, was the first one to regain his composure. "Isn't that a bit soon?"
"Yeah. You didn't give us much warning," Botan added.
"And when we you two planning on telling all of us this?" Yusuke demanded to know.
I just laughed softly. "It's not too soon, sorry about it being short notice, and we were planning on announcing it today during supper."
"We're eloping," Kurama told all of them, sitting down next to me.
Keiko blinked. "And when did you two decide on this?"
Sighing, I thought for a moment. "Less than half an hour ago."
Everyone's eyes suddenly became very big. Obviously they hadn't been expecting that answer.
"I'll never understand either of you," Koenma stated, shaking his head sadly. "Every time I think I have one of you figured out, you decide to surprise me."
"Sorry about that," I apologized. "I really don't mean to do that."
"Perhaps it would be better for you not to try to understand us," Kurama suggested calmly. "That way, we wouldn't surprise you."
"It'd make my job easier if I understood both of you," King Yama's son responded wistfully.
"Awww... are Kaline and Kurama making the poor toddler's life difficult?" Yusuke taunted.
"Take that back!" Koenma ordered, shaking his fist at the raven-haired teen. Soon, Yusuke and Koenma were in another argument.
I sighed, shaking my head sadly. Some things just never changed. Oh well. There wasn't a single thing I could do about it.
So, with some interesting background noise (shouting), I went back to eating my food.
