Chapter Thirty-Four: Becoming a Demon

Cassie's POV

I woke up, once again, in Hiei's arms. We didn't immediately leave the room, and we didn't come out for breakfast, which was okay. Kaline and Kurama didn't make it out for breakfast either, but that was kind of expected.

When the fire demon and I left the safety of our room for the midday meal, we found Kaline yelling at Kuwabara for eating the whipped cream. She didn't appear to be incredibly angry, but she didn't look happy either. The poor carrot-top was trying to defend himself, but the cat demon just refused to believe him.

Needless to say, Hiei and I quickly grabbed our lunch and went outside. We didn't want Kaline to find out that we were the ones who had used up all the whipped cream. There was no way we were going to allow my best friend to yell at us... at least, not if we couldn't help it. Of course, it helped that she was blaming Kuwabara.

"When do you think it'll be safe to go back inside?" I asked Hiei as I finished off my lunch.

He shrugged as he tightened his grip around me. "Let's try in an hour or so." He nuzzled my neck briefly and then rested his chin on my shoulder.

"Hmmm... that's a long time to just sit out here and do nothing," I commented, looking down at the ground. We were up in a tree, sitting on one of the lower tree branches. The fire demon was behind me, his back against the tree trunk. I was in front of him, my back against his chest and his arms around me. It was a very comfortable position.

"Hn. We won't be doing nothing," Hiei told me, moving one of his hands from around my waist to my inner thigh.

"Mmmm..." I leaned my head back until it was resting on Hiei's shoulder. "I do have something to tell you."

He didn't stop his moving hand, but he did respond. "Then tell me."

"I'm willing to become a demon."

Hiei froze for a moment, and then he hugged me tightly against him. I had the feeling that he was smiling; and when I turned my head to look at him, I found out that he was.

"Where are we going to get the koorime gem? Yukina?" I asked, curious. He nodded. "Okay, one last little question... Will it hurt?"

He frowned. "Will what hurt?"

"Changing into a demon." I waited patiently for an answer.

"I don't know," Hiei said softly. "But I would think not."

I nodded my head in acceptance. "Thank you, Lord."

He chuckled in amusement. "Most of the ingredients are inside."

I gave a small sigh. "Okay. Let's go inside and make this potion."

Fifteen minutes later, I was holding a glass full of a liquid that resembled orange Kool-Aid. The substance had no smell, which was definitely a good thing. I frowned at the glass, and then looked at Hiei and Kaline. Everyone had gathered to watch me change. The fire demon nodded his head in silent support, while Kaline used a more vocal approach.

"Well, Cassie, bottoms up." She smiled in encouragement.

"Yeah," I said in agreement. "Bottoms up." I brought the glass up to my lips and began to drink.

The liquid tasted like something sweet that had just begun to sour, and it felt like slime as it slid down my throat. Yuck. My stomach barely kept it down. I finished off the entire glass, and then waited expectantly for something to happen.

"How long is this going to-" I suddenly began to feel very hot and cold at the same time. Fire raced through my veins and ice filled my lungs and throat. The sensations slowly merged together, leaving my entire body throbbing to the beat of some silent drum.

"Cassie?" Hiei was holding onto me, and I couldn't remember him moving to do that. Had I passed out or something?

"I'm okay. I just feel strange," I answered, hugging the fire demon. "Am I a demon now?"

He nodded. "You're a Koorime."

"My best friend is an ice apparition. Goody," Kaline commented, laughing softly.

"Does that mean that I can cry the tear gems?" I wanted to know.

Yukina decided to answer that question. "Yes, you should be able to."

"What else can I do?" I looked to the other female koorime in the room for a response.

Hiei's sister began to explain things about koorimes, and I listened intently. She didn't talk for very long because there didn't seem to be much to explain. I was a koorime. I could cry tear gems. I had some powers over ice and possibly healing. Also, I could have a baby girl without Hiei's help. An interesting thing to know, not that I would even try to do that.

I smiled. "Well, it seems like I have some learning to do."

The rest of the day we spent at the beach, relaxing. My lessons were postponed until after our vacation, which had been a really good idea... at least, I thought so.

I swam around in the ocean with everyone, quickly adjusting to my "new" body. Truthfully, I didn't feel all that different. I just seemed to like the cold better than I used to. The ocean water didn't feel near as cold as I would have liked, but I didn't mind.

Everyone played Marco Polo again, which was much more fun than the last time. Whenever I caught Hiei, my hands tended to wander; Hiei did the same to me. Of course, I had a feeling that Kaline and Kurama were enjoying themselves as well, but I couldn't quite tell. All touching was done under the surface of the water.

After a while, the boys tired of the game and rented surf boards. Well, all the boys but Hiei did. Even Kurama decided to try his hand at surfing. The fire demon and I just laid out in the sun on one of the blankets, watching the guys make complete fools of themselves.

Not one of the males knew how to surf, and they were failing miserably at it, which was a funny thing to watch. The girls, who were sitting near me, were all laughing and giggling. Hiei chuckled so softly that I wouldn't have heard him if I hadn't been lying with my head on his chest.

For supper, we ate sandwiches that Botan had packed; and when it was time to leave, we all walked back to the beach house, happy and tired.

Everyone went to their respective rooms, and Hiei and I talked for a while about where we would live.

We decided on Makai... after a nice long discussion in which I made it perfectly clear that I wanted a house to sleep in before I would go there. So, I was going to stay at home until there was a house in the demon world for me. Besides, I needed some time to learn how to use my powers, and taking lessons in the demon world didn't sound like a good idea.

'Yeah... I can picture it right now. Me, trying to use one of my powers while a raging demon rushes at me to attack. The attack fails, and I die. How wonderful,' I thought sarcastically.

Hiei and I stayed up for a while longer and got to know each other a little better, so to speak.

At midnight, we finally decided to get some sleep. We said goodnight to each other, and then curled up under the covers together. Ten minutes later, I was asleep, wrapped in Hiei's strong arms.
