Chapter 1

Silver Shadows

“What's the mission, pacifier breath?” Yusuke asks Koenma.

“I want you four to protect a rare diamond at a Makai museum. They received a call from someone saying that Vixen X will strike tonight,” Koenma says, putting a picture of a diamond on his screen thing.

“What's so rare about that diamond? And who's Vixen X?” Yusuke asks, already bored.

“The diamond is the largest pure diamond found in all three worlds. It has a diameter of three feet, and it weighs forty-five pounds. It's worth more than fifty billion dollars in the human world,” Koenma explains. Yusuke's and Kuwabara's eyes grow huge.

“And Vixen X?” Kurama asks.

“Nobody knows her true identity. She says that if someone were to find her true identity, then she will stop stealing. But if it's another thief, she says she will kill them and take everything of theirs. So far, five of the lesser thieves have been slaughtered and their bodies show up in a particular Rakai cell. All that we could use to identify them with was their heads. The rest of their bodies were mangled and destroyed, almost as if they had gone through a paper mill while they were still alive,” Koenma says.

The guys look disgusted at the description. “What's so special about that cell?” Yusuke asks.

“That particular cell had only one living occupant. And she had killed herself before we could completely question her,” Koenma replies, putting a picture of a girl up on the screen. The girl has very pale skin, long black hair, emotionless silver eyes, and a scowl that could counter one of Hiei's. “She was found at the site of one of Vixen X's raids. All we could get out of her was the same lines over and over. We have it on recording as well,” Koenma says, pressing a button.

A soft, almost hateful, feminine voice reaches the guys' ears. “The vixen and her mate shall rise once more!” the voice growls. “They shall become a team once again! Their power shall not be stopped!” The voice starts to repeat what it had just said.

Koenma stops the voice by pressing another button. “That's all we could get out of her. After repeating it about five times, she grabbed a knife from her boot and killed herself,” Koenma says. “After she died, the raids stopped for ten years, so we thought that she had been Vixen X, but then the raids started up again. At the first raid since the death of the girl, Vixen X had carved into a metal wall behind the artifact she had stolen the exact words that the girl said. But instead of future tense, the sentences, except for one, were in present tense. The sentences said, `The vixen and her mate have risen once more! They shall become a team once again! Their power cannot be stopped!' That's all that was written.” Koenma starts to fret. “The raids started up again six years ago. And the raids were sometimes during the day, when people could see her. But no one saw who had taken the artifacts. All that was seen was that one second the artifacts were there, and the next, they were gone. You guys have to stop her.”

“We'll do our best,” Kurama says.

“Go to the museum and stop Vixen X,” Koenma says, creating a portal. The guys are pulled into the portal.

Yusuke and Kuwabara land on their faces on the other side, while Kurama and Hiei both land on their feet. When Yusuke and Kuwabara get up, they notice that they are in front of a huge museum. They walk inside, to see a wolf demoness seeming to be fretting about something. Then she turns and sees the guys. “Oh! Are you the detectives Koenma sent?” she asks.

“Yes, we are,” Kurama says politely.

“Please! You have to stop Vixen X from taking the diamond! It has more power than what I told Koenma! It can alter time and change the future entirely! It makes the user so powerful, that they cannot be beaten! Vixen X cannot have it! She would be more powerful than even Kami-sama!” the small wolf demoness says. “My name is Amara. Come! I'll show you to the diamond!”

With that, Amara runs off down a long hallway. The guys follow her fast pace. Amara stops in front of a huge iron door with a keypad on it. She quickly types in a code and the door opens. On the other side of the door is a pedestal of crystal holding a huge silver diamond. The guys all stare at the huge diamond, amazed at the size of it. “That is the Diamond of Purity,” Amara explains. “The most powerful of all focus stones.”

“What's a focus stone?” Yusuke asks, confused.

“A focus stone is a stone that can be used by someone who has so much magical power that it could destroy the person if they do anything wrong. The focus stone holds the excess magical power that the person has, and, if using the kind focus stone that suits them best, they can store enough power in one to destroy an entire world!” Amara explains. “The Diamond of Purity actually draws the excess power out of the person and into itself, because of how powerful it is, and it, like any focus stone, helps the person tap into pools of magic that would normally be out of their reach. A normal focus stone is about the size of this,” she says, pulling out a smooth half-sphere of quartz about the size of her fist embedded in a gold platelet that is attached to a golden chain. “This is my focus stone,” she says. “I was able to build this museum alone with only this quartz. I have also been able to guard my artifacts from all thieves with it. But, just two weeks ago, Vixen X showed up and took three of my more valuable antique vases. I didn't even know it until I went to check on them the next day! She had left a note on one of the pedestals, saying that she might return. Then I got a call last night saying that she will return for my diamond!” The small wolf demon gets tears in her eyes. “With the Diamond, she will be able to do anything she pleases! You have to stop her!”

“We'll do our best in protecting your diamond,” Kurama says, smiling at the small demon.

“Thank you! It is time to lock up the museum. I better be going,” the small wolf demon says. With a nod, she walks out of the room and closes the iron door behind her.

“Well, we better take posts,” Kurama says. The other three nod and each of them finds a place to hide. Yusuke decides to act like a real guard, so that Vixen X will think that it is only him that is there to protect the diamond.

---Six hours later (about two in the morning)---

A small silver fox with silver eyes walks up to the museum she had robbed from a few weeks ago. She feels only one energy signature, and it is totally pathetic. She jumps up into a tree near the museum and climbs to the top, where she jumps over to the top of the museum. She walks softly to a skylight that was above the room where the diamond is being kept. She peeks through and sees a boy trying to stay awake. She makes the glass disappear. “When will she be here?!” she hears the boy growl.

She smirks. She jumps down right in front of him and transforms to her demon form. “Patience is a virtue, you know,” she says, and laughs softly at the stunned look on his face. She notices a half-demonic energy signature come from him. She hears slight movement in three other places in the room.

“So, your Vixen X,” the hanyou says, jumping to his feet.

“Yep. And your one of Koenma's detective brats,” she says, and she smirks when she hears a growl from one of the support beams in the ceiling. She makes the support beam disappear, and a short guy, taller than her, falls. He lands on his feet, surprisingly. She hears the crack of a whip coming from one of the corners. She turns around and grabs the thorny whip that soars at her. “You wanna play?” she asks, smirking. She lets a little of her fire energy into the whip, making it start to burn. The whip drops to the floor as the fire spreads quickly along the whip. She douses the flames by drawing them into her before they can destroy the building or any of the artifacts.

She feels a large amount of spirit energy gathering at one point behind her. She turns quickly to see the dark-haired boy readying a spirit gun to shoot at her. “Spirit gun!” the guy yells, releasing the spirit energy. She holds up her hand, and the spirit energy stops. “WHAT?!” the guy yells.

“Just a little trick I learned while I was away,” she says, smirking as she sends his own attack back at him. It hits him straight in the chest, which forces him into the wall. He is knocked out upon impact. She shoots a sticky web-like substance at him, attaching him firmly to the wall. “This is pathetic. I expected more of a fight!” she complains softly. She turns to the diamond, a smirk on her face. “Might as well get what I came for,” she growls. Suddenly, the short guy from before rams into her. She gasps softly as he pushes her to the floor. She glares at the guy. She figures that he is a fire demon. “Water beats fire,” she growls. The guy just looks slightly confused. “Water Tornado!” she yells. A huge vortex of water rushes at the guy, hitting him before he can even react. He is slammed against the wall, knocking him out as well. He is dripping with water. She makes the wall practically absorb his arms, so that he cannot move.

“Two down, two to go,” she says, smirking, she turns to the corner where she senses an unknown spirit signal coming from. Suddenly, a very ugly guy rushes her with a spirit sword. “The pen is stronger than the sword,” she quotes, smirking. That leaves the guy very confused. She pulls out a piece of paper. Small Japanese writings appear on it. “Parchment of the Doomed!” she yells. The paper rushes him, destroys his sword, and wraps him up like a mummy. He falls onto the ground. Only thing you can see of him is his dark eyes. She turns to the last person standing. A tall red head with green eyes. He is glaring at her. “Last, but certainly not least, is flower boy,” she says, smirking. She walks toward him until she is standing two feet away. Most of her face is in shadow, though, allowing him to only see her silver eyes and dark silver hair. “Let's finish this, shall we?” she says, smiling though he couldn't see it.

“You are not going to get the diamond,” he says. His voice is soft, yet angry, like he is trying to hold back his temper.

“We'll see about that,” she says. “Knock me out before sunrise, and I shall leave the diamond alone, for the moment.”

They both get into attack positions, preparing to begin. They watch each other warily, making sure not to allow any weaknesses, and not to miss any of the other's. Suddenly, Vixen X changes into her full demon form :the silver fox from earlier: and jumps at his chest, causing him to fall. He pushes her off of him and stands up quickly. They hear a movement coming from where Yusuke is stuck to the wall.

“WHAT THE HELL?!” he yells, opening his eyes to see that he is stuck to the wall via a web-like substance.

Then Hiei also opens his eyes, to find that his arms are trapped in the wall. “THAT ONNA'S GONNA DIE!” he yells.

They both look to where Kurama and Vixen X are fighting. Vixen X is back in her demon form. She has a sword that seems to be on fire in her hands. She is attacking Kurama every two or three seconds. He blocks most of the attacks, but does get hit a couple times. Where the sword hits, his clothes and his skin burn slightly. But he ignores the burns and continues attacking her and blocking her attacks. The light starts to brighten some. They all look up to see that it is morning. “Time's up,” Vixen X says, smirking. “That diamond is mine.” She snaps her fingers, and the diamond is no longer on the pedestal, but in her hands. She snaps her fingers again, and the diamond turns to a shadow and travels up her arm to become a part of her shadow. “That was fun. See you boys around!” she says, snapping her fingers one last time. And she disappears from the museum. And her energy signature disappears from the Makai, and goes into the Ningenkai.

“We're in trouble,” Yusuke moans. “And can you get us free, Kurama?!” he yells at the reincarnated fox demon.

Kurama sweatdrops. He uses his rose whip to cut Yusuke and Kuwabara free of their entrapments. Then the three of them have to work together to get Hiei free. When he is finally free, Amara walks in. She looks at the downcast expressions on each of their faces; at the broken wall, the shredded paper, and the sticky cobwebs; and at the empty pedestal and sighs.

“She got away?” she asks softly, already knowing the answer. The four boys nod. She shakes her head. “Go home. Maybe Koenma can figure out a way to capture her with this stuff,” she says, picking up the mess that was created in freeing three of them. She puts it all into a bag and hands it to Kurama. “Thanks for trying at least,” she says. The boys all nod and leave via a portal that she had created to Koenma's office.
