On the Road
By Beautiful Dreamer
"Hiei, sit your ass down, while I'm driving." Genkai said as she looked at her rear view mirror and saw Hiei's head blocking her view.
"I don't see how you are able to drive, your feet can hardly reach the pedals, even in this vehicle." Hiei's chin was resting on the back seat as he looked at the back window.
"Brat, you're only an inch and half taller than me." Genkai spoke with irritation as she adjusts her rear view mirror to her blue Vols-wagon bug.
"Please, Hiei, you shouldn't say such unpleasant things to Genkai after she agreed to take care of us." The pleading look in Yukina's huge crimson eyes made Hiei feel guilt. He quickly sat down in his seat and leaned his head against the side window frame.
Gradually, the houses grew apart after leaving the city. In the early afternoon, the landscape became rocky, near the costal line, as they briefly traveled by it. Often farmer's children would stand at the side of the road to watch the cars go by. Soon they arrived to a place littered with trees and roaming meadows. The journey from the city to a far away country side was smooth and quite one … Up ahead, there was a tunnel natural made by over grown trees that blocked the sunlight and the road came a dirt path that reached over ten miles. Genkai turned on her high beams as they entered….
"We're only a few minutes away from the temple." Genkai announced.
"I've not seen any houses for a while, Genkai. Are their any people here?" Yukina asked.
A tiny smile crept on to Genkai's lips
"I assure you, Yukina, that they're a lot more people living here."
"What makes this town different than all the others?" Hiei said with a bored tone.
"People here, generally, keep to themselves. For some reason, the people living in this area are too afraid to go pass a certain point in the woods. The temple lays on the boarding point. So, they probably wouldn't be nosing. Some of the townies are scared to travel through this roa…" Before Genkai could finish her sentence, she slammed on the breaks.
A person was standing in their path and didn't seem to notice the head lights. However, the car couldn't stop, the line to the breaking fluid had a small cut that happen sometime ago in their journey. They were going to get the brake line fixed, once they had reached the town.
"Moron, move out of the way, we can't stop the car." Hiei's word weren't spoken by mouth but through telepathy. The person finally took notice of the car coming towards him but Hiei's voice in his head stunned the person. Yukina shut her eyes. Genkai looked down to reach for the emergency brake. Hiei couldn't divert his eyes as they moved closer, the head lights shown the person's shoulders; Hiei could clearly see cherry red hair. The three passengers braced themselves as the car started to skidded to a stop. In a split second before the car was about to make contact, Hiei saw two bare feet landing beside the person, and then they were both gone. Dirt lightly filled the air around the car, and the three got out of the vehicle. Genkai immediately check under the car but found nothing.
" I don't see anyone." Genkai said.
"Where could they go so fast?" Yukina looking around.
"You can stop looking…' Hiei lifted his head up to the trees. The branches were slightly shaken. Hiei walked to the spot were the boy was standing. There was an over powering smell of roses. Hiei tried to sense if he could pick a thought but couldn't …'The person that was standing in the road is he's gone."
"How do you…"Genkai stopped herself from asking a stupid question. "Let just get going."
"Someone else is watching us." Hiei told them, once all the doors were closed.
"What are they planning?" Yukina asked nervously.
"Nothing. It just wants us to leave as soon as possible." Hiei words made Yukina relax a little.
"I have no problem with that idea. Hiei." Genkai said as she started the car up.
"Hn."
"As much as it's nice to communicate telepathy in situation like this. You shouldn't use during the time we live here. It's important that you both don't use your special abilities."
"We understand." Yukina softly replied.
Shortly, the car finally pooled out of the forest. Yukina and Hiei eyes wide at what they saw. A gentle yellow light touched everything in sight. The sounds of the sea could be heard as they through to the town as people strolled on the sidewalks. Yukina rolled down her window to smell the air. The air was a mixture of salt water and various flowery aromas.
"I'm sorry, sis." A tall boy with orange hair came running down the street. An older girl with light brown hair came running after him. Yukina and Hiei looked on with slight curiosity. The oranged hair young boy felt their stares and his eyes meet Yukina's as the car pass. The teenaged boy then ran into a street lamp.
"I just saw an angel!" the twins heard as they rode farther down the street. The car turned the corner and the last thing they saw was the boy's sister beating the crap out of him.
Genkai pulled up to a car repair shop. Outside a middle lady with dark brown hair was smoking a cigarette. "Can I help you?" The woman spoke in a lazy voice.
"Yes, I need my brakes checked." Genkai told her.
"Yusuke!" The woman shouted loud enough to wake the dead. "What do you want, now?" A male voice yelled with equal loudness as he walked out of the store. The people in the car got out.
"Check the breaks on the car." The woman nodded to the small car. Groans were heard as the young man pushed the car on to a metal lift.
"Keep on complaining, Yusuke, and I'll reduce your pay."
"You don't pay me for doing this!" Yusuke restorted.
Yusuke worked swiftly to replace the lining on the brakes. While Genkai settle the bill with the shop owner. With the brakes repaired, Yusuke put the car can on the ground and pushed it back onto the main street.
"Thank you, for fix our car." Yukina gentle expressed her gratitude.
"Where are you headed?" Yusuke asked with some curiosity.
"We're moving into the Shinto Temple."
"The Shinto Temple." A burst of laughter came out of Yusuke.
"What's so funny?" Hiei snarled.
"Don't you know? You're living in a haunted temple. agh" A strong punch landed on the back of Yusuke head by the brown haired woman.
"Don't mind my son and his bad manners. I hope you come to like this town." The shop owner Atsuka said to the three travelers.
"Thanks. We should get going now." Genkai spoke as she open the car door.
"Yeah, enjoy living with spooks." Yusuke yelled as they drove off. The roads became narrower the farther up the hill that seemed like a mountain. There was a cluster of houses, once the ground leveled and they travel through it. A large open field that was the length of a football field. There was only one house within the field and it was a few feet from the road. Genkai brought the car to a stop and rolled down the window.
"Excuse me. Is this the right road to the Shinto Temple?" Genkai asked the person that was planting seed along the stepping stones that lead to the house. Hiei was slouching in his seat and did not care whom the old woman was talking to until he smelled the aroma of roses. Hiei sat up a bit and peeked out the window. There was a boy with bright cherry red hair and the greenest eyes that would make any plant envious. 'Could he be the person from earlier.' Hiei thought to himself.
"Yes. Just go straight and make a right." The young man said. Genkai, thanked him and shifted the car into drive. The guy saw Hiei peering out the window and waved at him. Hiei gave him a scowl in return and sank back into his seat.
The car speed through the forest's path. The trees were becoming bigger the farther they went in. It wasn't long before they reached the temple. The car came to its final stop and they all pushed the door open.
"This place…" Yukina couldn't find the words to describe the temple.
"This place is a dump." Hiei stated for his sister.
