Chapter One

Youko Reunion

 

With her reiki flaring around her, demons of even the A Superior Class backed off, obviously sensing that this girl - like those dratted Reikai Tantei. Was she one of them, or was she just a stray Koenma had picked up? The B Inferiors around her dashed away before any could think of any response, and the A Superiors wisely judged that this girl was not a girl to be messed with.

 

What was interesting about her was that, in spite of the reiki flaring on the outside, she had an unrivaled amount of youki within her, a mix of fox and bat demon, most likely, and as rare as they were, their amount of youki were rarer, since the fox-and-bat demon kind were though to be extinguished centuries ago. But this girl was indeed an interesting mix, for she was a mix of the infamous Youko Kurama, and his partner-in-crime, Kuronue.

The thing was, the girl did know Koenma, and was part of the Reikai Tantei. Well, all right; she was just sort of part of the Reikai Tantei. Her name was Yuri Chou, and she was around the age of seventeen years old. However, the fox-and-bat hybrid within her was over at least nine centuries old. As her silvery-blue eyes wandered over the palace walls, she was captured in magnificence. She'd never - even in the Makai - seen such a palace as this, and Maze Castle, well. Maze Castle was another thing, but the Reikai Palace was humongous compared to both the Makai Palace and Maze Castle.

 

Yuri approached an oak door - a large, oak door - pushed it, and opened it to find Koenma - in his usual toddler form - and four other people. One with black hair with mild chocolate eyes, another with black hair and red eyes, one with red hair and green eyes (this certain Tantei gave Yuri a certain feeling that made her shiver), and the last one with orange hair and black eyes.

 

"Ah, Yuri, thank you for coming," Koenma greeted as he turned into his teenage form, smiling at her, his chestnut eyes twinkling their usual way when he was around you.

 

Yuri bowed slightly, and said, "Of course."

 

"Yuri, these are my current Reikai Tantei - I'm sure you've met at least one of them, right?" Koenma asked.

 

The girl's brows furrowed together. Oh yes, she thought, he must mean that redhead. Oh, what was his name again…? And so she turned to the green-eyed redhead, "Shuuichi Minamino, I presume?"

 

Shuuichi nodded, "Yes."

 

Yuri's eyes narrowed at his smooth reply. There's that feeling again, Yuri thought. What is it with Shuuichi…unless of course, he isn't Shuuichi at all!

 

Yusuke stared soundlessly at the girl's rueful stare at Kurama. "Is there…something wrong?"

 

"Oh, iie," Yuri replied just a bit too quickly, and then turned to ask Koenma, "What's the mission then, Sir?"

 

"There is an S Superior—"

 

"Hold it!" was the cry from Yusuke. "She's going with us on this mission?"

 

"Of course," Koenma answered, repeating Yuri's earlier response.

 

"And…why is that?" Hiei questioned.

 

"Because she's—" And, right in the middle of his response, Yuri cut him off.

 

"I'd rather respond, My Lord, seeing as it is my heritage you are about to reveal."

 

Koenma smiled at Yuri; "Go ahead."

 

The girl kept her eyes focused on 'Shuuichi' as she said, "I was—or, I am the only child of the infamous thieves Youko Kurama and Kuronue."

 

'Shuuichi' gasped. "You're—you're—"

 

And Yuri finally figured out the strange feeling she'd been feeling ever since she first set eyes on 'Shuuichi Minamino.' He wasn't Shuuichi Minamino all this time. "That's right," she responded, smiling smugly, "Father."

 

Koenma coughed lightly, "Yes, yes, thank you. Now, back to our mission, it seems that somebody from both Kurama and Yuri's past is after them once again—no, Kurama isn't Yomi so don't give me that look. Apparently, this demon is an S Superior, and while he does not harness the seikoki Sensui had, he can still pack a punch, literally. His name—" a shuffling of papers as Koenma returned to his desk and sat down "—would be 'Yuriatoge.'"

 

"That means Dark Heritage in the Makai language, doesn't it…Father?" Yuri queried, still trying to get used to calling someone the same age as her as 'Father.' Then again, Youko Kurama was one thousand years old, her inner demon Youko Mizu only being nine hundred years, so according to demon-age, it was all fine.

 

"Close," Kurama nodded, and explained, "'Yuri' does mean 'Dark' in most cases, but in his name, it means 'Malice.' The 'atoge' part of his name may mean 'Heritage' when you are talking civilly, but in his name, it means 'Destruction.'"

 

Koenma nodded. With his extent knowledge of the Makai language (or, at least thanks to the dictionary he'd memorized just earlier), he had to agree with Kurama. "Along the line, you've all been facing demons who want the Ningenkai destroyed. However, this one is different. This demon wants the Makai destroyed, and won't stop killing Reikai's supply of A and S Superior Classed demons. I need you to find out why he's doing this—"

 

"That isn't necessary," Kurama interrupted. "I already know why he wants to kill the demons, and destroy the Makai. I denied him as a mate."

 

Yusuke rolled his eyes. "That's it?"

 

"No, you don't understand," Yuri returned. "Father, back then, was wanted by all demons, female or male—to this day, I am still wondering why—" she added sarcastically, but then continued seriously, "—but none of the 'outside' demons knew that Father had already chosen Kuronue as his mate. It was to be a sort of…private—oh, what was that word—wedding of sorts, and only Father's band of thieves were 'guests'—Yomi was still there, mind you, and he was one of those who wanted Father as a mate.

 

"However, since Father had already mated with Kuronue—that mark is still on your neck, right, Father?—he was, shall we say, taken, and therefore no other demon could touch him. However, Yuriatoge, being the dragon demon he was, he was persistent on getting my father, and so, when Father and well, Father went to the Makai Castle to steal that lone mirror, Yuriatoge had already talked with the castle's owner, and Yuriatoge had deliberately cut Father's pendant—no, Kuronue's—which therefore caused Kuronue's death.

 

"Yuriatoge then thought it was safe to 'capture' my father," she continued, "but Father knew already—except he didn't know that it was Yuriatoge who had killed Kuronue, stop giving me that look, Father!—that Yuriatoge was after him, and right before the day Yuriatoge was to come by his cave (I was already born, three months earlier), he was shot by that idiot of a Special Defense Force member, and therefore sought refuge in the Ningenkai.

 

"And by the way," she added, looking at the other three Tantei, "I do believe we haven't been introduced."

 

The one with mild chocolate eyes and black hair stepped up to Yuri, "I'm Yusuke Urameshi."

 

The one with orange hair and black eyes pushed Yusuke out of his way, took Yuri's hand, and said, "I am the great Kazuma Kuwabara and—" He suddenly shrank away, noticing Kurama's death-glare that was sent to him.

 

Yuri looked at the one with black hair and red eyes, and smiled at him, her silver-blue eyes sparkling, "And you would be?"

 

"My name is—"

 

"Oh, don't bother talking to the Shrimp," the one Yuri knew as 'Kuwabara' said. "He won't even—"

 

He shrank away again, noticing another death-glare Kurama sent him.

 

"—Hiei," he continued.

 

Yuri turned to Yusuke again, asking him, "You're the owner of the one-third of the Makai Lord Raizen used to own, aren't you?"

 

He nodded.

 

"I'm sorry, through all of this, I haven't properly introduced myself. My human name is Yuri Chou, but my demon name would be Mizu—Youko Mizu, to be specific."
