“Here goes!” Mari opened her spellbook and put her finger on the first page. “The first spell, Degron!” The book flashed a brilliant red before fading away. Kizu eyes glowed for a moment and then he moved. He disappeared in a flash.
“Where'd he go, Kiyo?” Zatch searched for his opponent.
“I'm right here!” Kizu appeared in front of Zatch, delivering a punch to his gut that sent him flying backwards. He flew past Kiyo and slammed into a car, crushing the hood and making a dent.
Kiyo ran over. “Zatch, are you alright?”
“Yeah…” Zatch struggled to sit up among the rubble. “…He's coming again!” Zatch pointed up, where Kizu was pummeling down from the air.
“Okay, Zatch, look up! Zakere!” Zatch began spouting out a huge blast of lightning upwards.
“Dodge to the left, Kizu!” Mari shouted. Kizu moved quickly, disappearing and reappearing to the left, avoiding the Zakere and still moving up through the air. “Now, Shikuzun!”
Kizu flashed once more, and small glints appeared from behind him. “Take this!” He brought his arms down and a barrage of silver circles came flying towards Zatch. They were moving too fast to tell but-
“Zatch, they're ninja stars! Jump out of the way!” Kiyo ran out onto the street. Zatch obeyed, jumping off the car just as the stars crashed towards him, stabbing cleanly through the metal hood.
“They dodged it, Kizu!” Mari growled as Kizu reappeared on the ground in front of her.
“Quit complaining and give me another spell!” Kizu snapped.
“Shikuzun!” Mari shouted again. Kizu blasted forth his stars again.
“Ra shield!” Zatch's shield rose up just in time to absorb the attack. It flashed and sent the shuriken back, each one charged with electricity. Kizu jumped out of the way, easily evading the attack.
“What are you waiting for, Mari?!” Kizu shouted. “Read something else!”
“Hold on!” Mari snapped. “Okay… Shaku!” she shouted.
Kizu landed on the ground and a giant shuriken appeared in front of him. He flung it forth. Zatch ran out of the way, but the star turned in mid-air, following him. “It's following me?” Zatch turned again, but the star followed each move, drawing closer each time.
“It's homing in on him…” Kiyo bit his lip, deep in thought. It was a long shot, but if it was done right… “I know! Zatch stop moving!”
“Are you sure?!” Zatch asked, but he stopped moving nonetheless.
“I want you to duck…NOW!” Kiyo shouted. Zatch hit the ground, and the shuriken soared over his head, crashing into another car.
“They dodged again?!” Kizu glared at his bookkeeper. “Forget beating the mamodo! Let's go for the book!”
“Right… Shaku!” Mari shouted. The ninja star reappeared and Kizu got ready to sent it flying.
“Zatch, watch it, here comes another!” Kiyo shouted. Zatch braced himself, ready to run out of the way.
“Here goes! Hah!” Kizu let the star fly, but it didn't head for Zatch. It was veering towards…
“Kiyo!!!” Zatch dashed over and jumped just in time to intercept the attack. The star slashed into him before disappearing. Zatch fell to the ground.
“Zatch, are you alright?” Kiyo knelt down next to him. The mamodo didn't answer
“Let's finish this! Kizu concentrate on the boy!” Mari commanded. “Digonmiku Rei!” A barrage of ninja daggers appeared and flew towards Kiyo and Zatch.
“Come on, Zatch!” Kiyo picked up the mamodo under one arm and half-dragged half-carried him out of the way. The daggers cashed into the ground and disappeared.
“They keep dodging!” Kizu shouted.
“Kiyo, another spell, hurry!” Zatch suddenly jumped out of Kiyo's grip and got up.
“Let's hit them first!” Mia smiled. “Digonmiku Rei!” the knives appeared once more, ready to fly.
“Zakere!” Kiyo shouted, but before the spell could take effect, the knives blasted on Zatch. Not all of them hit him; a single dagger flew past Zatch, aiming for the book.
“No!” Kiyo quickly turned at the last minute, blocking the book with his body. The dagger continued it's intended path and struck, slashing Kiyo's side. It disappeared, but the cut was already highlighted by a streak of red.
“Kiyo!” Zatch shouted. He reached out a hand, but the impact from the attack, though it left no cuts, was still too painful for him to move. Kiyo collapsed on the ground, the red spellbook falling a few feet away. Mari walked past Kiyo and picked up his book.
“That wasn't too hard…” she whispered. “We'll be burning this book now…”
“Give that back…” Kiyo could barely bring his voice over a whisper.
Kizu, meanwhile, had walked over to Zatch. “Wow… kinda embarrassing, isn't it?” Kizu said. “You got beaten by a girl and a little kid. Some book reader you got… He couldn't even help you win…”
Zatch pushed himself up. “Shut up! Kiyo is a great book keeper, and we haven't lost yet! I still have some energy left.” He dragged himself over.
Kizu shook his head. “A book keeper wouldn't be losing your book, now would he? Let's get rid of it, Mari.”
Mari walked over and threw the book in front of her mamodo. “Ready?” she asked, flipping open her own spellbook. “Digomi-”
“No!” Zatch grabbed Kizu and Mari's legs and gripped tightly. Electricity coursed from his body and shocked them.
“Ahh!” Mari trembled under his shock, dropping her own book.
Kiyo finally got up and used the diversion to dash over and grab the book. “Come on, let's get out of here, Zatch!” he shouted, a hand over his wound.
Zatch let go and followed Kiyo, leaving Mari and Kizu paralyzed under the electricity.
