Cowboy Bebop Fan Fiction ❯ Song of the Swimming Bird

Prologue: This fanfic takes place sometime before the concluding trilogy sessions of Hard Luck Woman and The Real Folk Blues Pt. 1 and 2. It is an alternative course that the crew of the Bebop could have (not should have) taken. Spike Spiegel, a man who lives half in the present and half in the past is about to make decisions which will reshape the path he is on. In the end of the series we know that Spike frees himself by choosing to confront his past, against the advice of his comrades. But this is the story of another kind; of how Spike chooses to begin life anew. That doesn’t necessarily solidify a happy ending; this is Cowboy Bebop after all. All things have to come to an end, and that’s the tragedy.
Writer’s Note (not necessary for reading the chapter, just a FYI): I learned this quickly. I’ve talked to a lot of people who love (maybe too much! MM sweats) the series and have their minds set in a certain way about what a character would say and how he/she would act. (You wouldn’t find Spike reciting epic poetry or Vicious finding out how many licks it takes to get to the bottom of a tootsie roll pop.) Some characters are purposefully ambiguous and we have to fill in blanks. All in all, keep in mind that I tried to keep everyone in character based on the information I had.
Another problem with writing a Beebop story is that music and ambiance are nearly as important, if not more important, than dialogue. I can’t record a jazzy record, this isn’t a multimedia event! Use your god-like imagination, or pop in a cd! The exquisite animation and Yoko Kanno and company are the glue that keeps the show all together. So I’ve taken the course of portraying thoughts and creating word pictures as opposed to straightforward script, which wouldn’t be true to the anime (maybe the manga though, it can be wacky in some parts).
