Ah...that was a great read. I love the symbolism here -- Gojyo and Sanzo smoke so much I just take it for granted, but you've given a really thoughtful and logical reason for why they started in the first place. Your writing is very subtle, and I like the little details and humour embedded within each characters' section. The fact that each detail is so appropriate to the characters' voices just makes the overall feeling that much more realistic. Your Goku, as usual, has that right balance of obliviousness without being too oblivious. He would of course notice the important Sanzo-pertinent details.
