the movie that you based this story on is called 'Somewhere in Time'. Movie goes man meets old woman who gives him a watch, he goes in search of her only to find that she had died. The man then goes to hotel where she had been, and then time travels to the past to meet her when she was young. they meet, fall in love, and make a plan to be together. while he was checking his suit in front of her, he sticks his hand one of the pockets and pulls out a penny from the future, which forces him back to his time. the man tries to go to the past again, but it doesn't work. he ends up dying from heartbreak, but meets with the woman in the afterlife. so, sorry if this is a mess, it's been a while since I've seen the film.
