Ashley "Ash" MacKenzie once lived a perfectly normal life back in New York City, where
she lived with her mother, father and younger sister, Rhyanna. However, one bad day
drove her entire life to hell. With her sister raped and murdered, a father so
completely distraught that he caused a car accident, and eventually died; and a mother
desperate for money and pity that she turned to prostitution and drug dealing to make a
living. Now, her single parent forces her to join a cross-country trip, that leads them to
the Pacific Coast, at the feet of a city known as Aspen Falls. A place where the
supernatural wasn't so unbelieveable, and where her life would once again, take a
life-altering turn...

She then bumps into a highly agitatible gothic named Whei - who has just met Ash,
but already has a distinct distaste for her. More confusion erupts when Ash is taken to a
small, once inhabited Chinese Restaurant that Whei and a dragon named Noshi - who can
change between human form and dragon form - call the 'dojo'. Here she meets
Akiko-sensei, who claims Ash is a gifted child, inhabited by the spirit of a rare animal. Though she makes plenty of new friends, Ash can't go through with killing other living supernatural creatures - which is the main purpose of the spirit apprentices...
