Kira woke up from a dream. Like all the dreams he had, it was just another hazy materialization of his mere fantasies. From his bed, he looked outside the window with his smoky violet eyes and found out that it was still dark. The crickets can be heard singing effortlessly their natural symphony. The clock on his table read four fifty-one a.m. so he waited for the sun to rise, thinking what lies ahead of him on that day.
As always, the sun rose up from the east and its rays were instantly scattered, bringing the lighted side of the Earth to a whole new level of animation. Boredom began to set in so he got his diary and scribbled on it, continuously pouring all his positive and negative thoughts just to while away the time and to rid his mind of anything that could give him any kind of apprehension.
It was already seven o’clock in the morning when a knock came to his bedroom door. “Please do come in” Kira authorized the person behind the door. It was carefully swung ajar revealing a tall and handsome chap. He was fully clad in a nice Astroboy T-shirt and a pair of acid-washed jeans. “Good morning Kira!” the guy cheerfully greeted while he walked over to Kira’s bed and gave him a light peck on the cheek. The boy pony tailed his long cobalt-blue hair after placing a bucketful of the freshest, reddest roses in an empty glass vase sitting on the bedside table. “My mornings are always good whenever you are around.” Kira answered back. “How was your night? Did you have any sweet dreams?” the guy with sparkling emerald-green eyes asked as he poured water into the vase.
“Now that you’ve mentioned it, I slept pleasantly last night and I did have a dream. I dreamt that we went to Orb Country to visit the Archangel crew and Cagalli.”
“We already paid them a visit three years ago. We spent the whole Yuletide season there. Remember the prank we pulled on the Archangel crew?” said the blue-haired boy as he opened the windows to let some fresh air in.
“How could I forget that one? We were very drunk that time and we were so, so out of our minds that we stumbled inside the Archangel’s bridge and played with the controls. For all I know the crew panicked when you pushed the red alert button. They thought the ship was under attack!” Kira revealed in a rising intonation and at the same time tried to suppress the rising tension inside him.
“And I even puked on your shirt!!” the other boy added making Kira spill out all the laughter he failed to hide. They laughed together for quite a long time on that very moment. They laughed because they felt the urge to and parallel to all the moments of laughter, it soon died out.
“Athrun, what’s for breakfast?” Kira asked.
“Now it figures…”
“Figures what Athrun?” Kira again asked as to what Athrun was talking about.
“It figures that you are already hungry. Look it’s already seven fifteen.” Athrun pointed out after he took a quick look on is wristwatch.
“You didn’t answer my question Athrun. What’s for breakfast?” Kira insisted with a hint of authority in his voice.
“Oh sorry. Breakfast today would be . . . hmmm . . . a total secret.”
“What?!”
“Unless . . . you keep your eyes closed ‘til I get back here from the kitchen.”
“It’s easier done than spoken. Now get on with it please. I’m starving.”
With that said Kira closed his eyes and the room became silent. “No peeping. Or else I’ll poke your eyes.” Athrun said with a light chuckle as he went down to the kitchen and prepared Kira’s breakfast. When Athrun came back to the bedroom he placed three extra pillows on Kira’s back so that he could sit a more appropriate angle.
“Now open your mouth.” Athrun instructed Kira (whose eyes are still closed) and he did follow the other boy’s order without any hesitation.
Athrun made Kira taste the pancakes he prepared earlier in the morning. Before he gave Kira a bite sized portion, a few things ran through his mind. ‘Will Kira like it?’ ‘Will he spit it out and curse me?’ ‘Oh God. I hope my recipe works this time. If Kira doesn’t like it, I swear I’ll kick my own face.’ In high hopes he just waited for Kira’s initial reaction.
Kira’s eyebrows slightly converged when the pancakes landed on his taste buds and then chewed the food again. A lot of chewing took place before Kira decided on whether to swallow it or to shoot it out like a nasty gastric projectile. With every movement of Kira’s mouth and Athrun’s heart leapt with anticipation. At last Kira opened his eyes. As usual, he revealed his description in his trademarked manner – annoying but true. Kira knows how to wield words like razor-sharp blades.
“The batter is a bit dry and the pH is slightly low indicating the use of “an” acidic fruit.” Kira remarked stressing the word “an”. “But the low level of moisture was compensated by the use of maple syrup if I’m not mistaken and . . . blueberry.” “To tell you frankly, this tastes like trash. Wrong choice of ingredients I daresay.”
Athrun had already prepared himself for this kind of situation so he tried to divert Kira’s attention to other things. “Excellent food analysis Kira! Looks like you’re skills are fast improving. Next time I’ll add slight amounts of poison on your food. Let’s see if you can detect them. Yes, poison but not the fatal types though. Only, bearable kinds. You know, ones that give you 24 hours of nasty headaches.”
Kira didn’t seem to like his idea and Athrun even had the nerve to let out a chuckle until he realized that his cooking is still in shambles. “There’s still room for improvement Athrun. Plenty of room.” he said unto himself clearly defeated by Kira’s words. He guessed that he shouldn’t dream of cooking Kira an edible meal anymore. He then picked up the food tray and started to walk out of the room. Suddenly, a gentle hand grabbed his wrist. It was Kira’s hand to be more precise. Kira’s hands are callused just like his own, due to long years of hand conditioning for hand-to-hand combat.
“Where are you going?” Kira asked flatly. Athrun remained silent for a moment and when he was about to speak, Kira suddenly broke the silence.
“Okay, okay. The poison thing is fine with me. I know you’re upset because of my comments, I’m sorry but it’s the truth you know.”
“So, it means that I’m still a bad cook then?”
“To be honest, yes. But there’s still room for improvement right?” Kira tried to lighten up the other boy’s mood. “And who said I didn’t like your pancakes? I was just joking you know. I was criticizing your food on a more professional level and besides you’re not a professional cook are you?” Kira’s voice was rather calm in saying those things contrary to his tone a while ago and indeed his words helped.
“Why don’t we just drop the subject and eat outside? It’s already light out.” Athrun said in a suggestive voice.
“As you wish.” Kira answered. Without any hesitation, Athrun wrapped his arms around Kira’s thighs and easily hoisted him up with him. In doing this they passed through halls lined with marble statues and limestone busts. Napoleon Bonaparte, Alexander the Great, Cleopatra, Julius Caesar, almost every famous personality was included. The floors furnished in the finest carpets that came all the way from the Middle East with hues of warm and earthy, yet subtle colors. Walls jam-packed with contemporary expressionism paintings; distorted in each way, ever fluorescent with the creator’s mental condition. The paintings alone served as a status symbol of Kira’s family.
It was quite a long walk through the halls but Athrun’s well-developed limbs stood up to the challenge. While walking Kira enclosed his arms around Athrun tightly and rested his head on Athrun’s shoulder. The other boy was quite surprised at Kira’s gesture so he paused on his track and leaned against the wall and asked what made Kira do so.
“It’s just that …that … I ... I ... I missed you Athrun.” Kira finally got it out, eyes swimming in a pool of gloomy tears. He always has been in that way. His soul still wanders in a realm of uncertainty, fearing that his only beloved one might leave him one day. For the past years their job as reconnaissance agents has proved to be risky, too risky for their fragile relationship; a balancing act that must be done with precision.
“Why?” Athrun asked in return while he sat down on the floor, gently pulling Kira closer to him.
“You’ve been away for quite some time and I’m happy that you’re already here. I’m very sorry for my own shortcomings. If I could only find a way to help you with the other clients.” Kira said in a low voice.
“You don’t have to say that. We have been immersed in this kind of job and there is no way of getting out Kira.” “The only thing that we can do now is to hold on together. Trust me Kira, everything will be alright,” he whispered into Kira’s ear while he removed stray locks of brown hair on the boy’s face and wiped his tears away.
From those words exuded comfort and warmth. He slowly leaned in to Athrun’s face and without any hesitation, softly pressed his lips to Athrun’s. Whenever Athrun is around Kira can always find a refuge from his own tragic memories that continuously haunt him day and night. In Athrun’s company somehow, those memories are temporarily evicted from his subconscious.
Athrun began to kiss back and opened his mouth urging Kira to go deeper. But Kira pulled back suddenly and leaned back to Athrun’s chest. The other boy wasn’t disappointed and considered Kira’s feelings at the moment. Athrun let his fingers run through Kira’s face, tracing a path through his neck and his back, which sent chills through Kira. Outside, snow was already falling down and everything gradually became dark. Chilly December nights began to set in their lives one again.
“The sun must have taken a leave.” Kira said jokingly noticing the change of the weather condition, his face still pressed against Athrun.
“Kira, would you like me to take a leave? You know, to unwind a bit and spend Christmas with you?” asked Athrun for Kira’s opinion.
“Like the usual Christmases we had spent all throughout our lives? Yeah sure, who wouldn’t?” Kira pulled a smile for this one. Rarely did Athrun nor him made a vacation leave from their demanding job.
“Then what are we sitting here for? No one really, so…”
“So what Athrun?”
“You should take a bath first. A nice warm bath.”
“I’d love that.”
So, Athrun again would need to carry Kira all the way to the bathroom up to the third floor of the Yamato Manor. But it didn’t give him a problem anyway, as long as he was with his Kira; anything is possible.
While they were walking Kira managed to ask Athrun a question he had long stored in his mind.
“Athrun, how long has it been since we first fell in love with each other?”
“Quite a long time. Eight, nine, maybe ten years. I forgot.”
“It’s our seventh today, silly.”
“Oh really? I didn’t quite figure that out. I’m not so good with dates and stuff.” Athrun laughed out lightly as he shifted his hold on Kira. Memories then, come flooding back.
