Sonomi Daidouji has fallen ill, and her daughter is left a mere orphan. Using
her mother's last few scraps of money, she travels from Japan to England by ship, to see her new legal guardian, Headmistress Bishop and her daughter Elizabeth.

Headmistress Bishop is Sonomi's sister and has always been jealous of her deceased sister. Tomoyo reminds the headmistress of her sister appearance-wise. She mistreats Tomoyo, and Elizabeth treats Tomoyo badly because of racial differences. Tomoyo becomes a servant at the headmistress's finishing school.

Meanwhile, Kinomoto Sakura is a motherless girl. Her father needs to go to the Americas for exploration reasons and decides that Sakura should go to a refined finishing school before joining him. Her brother is in England, however, studying at the university.

Hiiragizawa Eriol is the young son of the wealthy noble knight and his lady. However, when he was younger, he had decided to run away. Now, Eriol becomes doubtful of his earlier drastic and rash decisions. He is part of the stage crew at the local theatre. There, he meets a wonderful young lady with a beautiful voice of an angel.

Li Syaoran is the first mate sailor of his mother and father's ship, The Little Wolf. When he catches first sight of a young lady, he immediately falls in love.

Sakura befriends Tomoyo, and she and Eriol encourage her to fulfill her dreams. Touya must give up his sister to a first mate on a ship who has fallen in love with her. Through these encounters grows love. But is Sonomi really dead?
