[MediaMiner Member] On: January 24, 2005 19:48 Comment/Review: While you have the individual elements all done very well it appears that there was no original setup of body form, the neck and shoulders seem to be slipping away a bit. Regardless if your doing realistic or cartoon you simply have to go through the rigmarole of setting up the body with "skeletal" form lines (spheres and lines) to ensure the overall proportion of the body, even with a bust shot its simply to easy to get caught up in some specific detail and let some overall scaling slip. If your working over the top of form lines you have your reference to keep you grounded, its annoying to do each time but you have to do it. It looks very nice however. Biz :)

Her face is very cute, and your shading is very nice. Her hair highlights seem to not be consistant. However, the picture seems well balanced and has good form. Lovely pencil work I must say! ~~Amostar~~

They're both cutesy. Her eyebrows and the eyes are a bit off, more so on the (our) left side of the face. As for the hair, could use more observation and less highlights as far as length goes. The neck, as Dx said, is a bit awkward. Other than that, you've done a nice job. I'm not sure if you're all ready using the stumps, but you should, because that will really improve the quality of your work and less smudges around the paper.

You also don't seem afraid to really put darks down, and that makes for a nice range of value in the entirety of the picture. However, beyond the akwardness of the anatomy that has already been mentioned (might want to watch the position of that ear, it almost seems to be slipping off of her head) the hair sticks out to me the most. It's good that you have highlights and darks, but I think that the highlights on the parts of her hair that are hanging down are too long, and instead of serving as highlights it almost looks like she's had a bad bleach job at a salon. Adding more midtones and/or also shortening those highlights would remedy that. As far as the anatomy, you'll find that if you can somehow look at this image backwards (either in a mirror or by just flipping it backwards in Photoshop) it will be clear what you need to fix. I like how you've managed to avoid a major pitfall that people have with realistic styles: the tendency to outline things. The fact that you can make these forms using value alone is very promising and will work well for you in future pieces. Nice work.

Since I draw in a more cartoonish style, I can only offer a little advice. The major area of awkwardness to me seems to be in the neck area. Her head seems to rest a bit too high from her shoulders, like her neck is elongated. Her shoulders seem to be a little small and rushed, they would look better if extended further out in my opinion. The lips are slightly off center, and the chin is pointed as though she is looking forward, but her eyes and nose are more angled towards the side. Anyways, despite it's minor irregularities, an excellent job... can't wait to see more ^_^
