Title: Broken Vision [ Miscellaneous :: Abstract Art ] By: Yuugi-chan
Uploaded On: Dec 9 14:51:41 2006
Description: This is a graphic design project I did in my computer graphics class. The assignment was that we had to create a picture expressing the word "vision" by creating a design containing one of the letters from that word. So I decided to go with the letter "O", read more

You wanted us to rip it to shred, we'll do that. One of the first thing I noticed was that it gave off a very disorientating feeling, which was you were aiming for right? So you got that down pat. One of the things I noticed after the disorientated feeling, is the missing side of one largest piece on the far bottom left. That didn't feel 3 dimensional. Another thing you could have done is to remove a few pieces out of the letter 0, because, right now, it doesn't seem that it's actually missing anything, just a one disjointed letter with random, added pieces. where did that come from, I wonder. But other than that, it's really nice, yuu. =D

I am not really up on abstract art, but in my opinion it is an expression of the artists visual statement. I like the broken O and the fact that the pieces do not match though at first glance they do look like a puzzle. It really visualy gives a disjointed feel. The entire image is off balance, it makes me want to move things around and fix them, that to me is what it seemed you were striving for, how vision can be distorted, interperted differently then it orginaly was met to be. Nice work, hope you got a good grade on the work.~Fanilia

The background could use a little work, the overly bright white spots at the bottom detract from the image. My eyes would tend to focus on that area instead of the broken O in the middle. Maybe balancing the bright spots with various shades of gray would help, like some bright spots coming from the center of the O or something like that. As for the larger shattered pieces surrounding the O, it's hard for me to tell whether the black shapes adjacent to them are drop shadows or an effect to make them look 3D. The reason it's hard for me to tell is because they look detached from the gradient shapes. One final suggestion would be light source. If you do plan on making the bottom or any other area a prominent source of light, it would help if the direction of the gradient on the shapes reflected that. In this case, if the light source is at the bottom, then the gradients on the shapes would go from light (down near the bottom) to dark (up).

I know very little about abstract a- well, no, I know about it, but it's very hard to critiques since it's the artist trying to express themselves, and it's very hard to critique a "feeling". But I think something that could make this more visually pleasing is to add some sort of texture onto the broken O, instead of just pure gradient. Some hairline cracks, some texture brushes, etc.
