"Chained" Reviews/Comments [ 3 ] | Title: F.A.R.G. Reviewed By: Fanilia [MediaMiner Member] On: September 04, 2007 02:04 Comment/Review: I can't really top Lady Macbeth for insight in a review. I can suggest that if you are uncomfortable with drawing the male sex organ, you should cut the drawing off right below the naval so that you don't have to try to use shading to cover it up. I really like the facial expression, you did a nice job on it. Keep working on the drawing.~Fanilia

This is personal opinion here, but I think it looks a bit wonky when people just lightly shade out genitalia. If you're not comfortable with genitalia, then I suggest finding alternative ways to block it out, such as a different hand placement, or a piece of cloth draping over the shoulder and just barely covering the genital region. Something a little more graceful than just darkened shading, especially when said shading is inconsistent with the light source. I know it's a silly little thing for me to be dwelling on, however the first review just said it all. xD My only other suggestions to you would to just do some overall anatomy practice. The hands are extremely lacking in detail (and joints), for example. But overall, since your main focus of this is male study, work on what Lady Macbeth has told you. His figure is very feminine, and were it no for the fact that he lacks breasts, I would have easily mistaken him for a woman.

Comment/Review: You mentioned working with male proportions in your post, so that's what I'm primarily going to focus on with this review. It's readily apparent by looking at the figure that you're more familiar with drawing females - this particular figure has a lot of effeminate characteristics, and it's not helped by the block shading over the genitals. When you're learning to draw male figures, it helps to stick to "stereotypical" male characteristics. This figure features a slim neck, rounded hips and thighs, soft bicep definition, delicate hands and the elbows are drawn together. These are all typical female characteristics. The figure is off-balanced, which makes it a bit hard to look at the other proportions closely; standing too long in this pose would cause the figure to fall forward. Especially with a male, and the indication that there is some resistance on the chains (they are not slack) you'll want to have the shoulders and head to reflect the figure pulling backward to right himself. The proportions on the hips, thighs and groin are also off, even with the block shading; in both males and females, the thighs do not meet at a ^ point like that when the knees are at all apart. Even when the knees (and thus legs) are together, there is still a supple roundness to the overall shape. If you're uncomfortable with studying the nude male genitalia, you could start with the "Ken doll" approach and study models for underwear and swimwear to get a feel for overall shape.
