CHAPTER ONE
Morning came, the mall opened… time to start another day. I did my best not to let my sadness from early morning get to me. I came to the lemon before opening my store, and I smiled at the first thing I saw, my friends. They all saw me and we exchanged our good mornings. “Hey… are you feeling okay…?” Wyatt asked when he noticed I seemed a little sleepy. “Oh, nothing… just got up too early.”
As we all sat there chatting away. I couldn't help but gaze at everyone. I was so happy to see them all, and know I was part of them. “Did anyone hear about the talent-show coming?” asked Wyatt.
“Dude… I even scored a gig there as head usher.” said Jonesy. “I'll save you all some front-seats.”
“Whatever…” Nikki said. “It can't be worse than work. The Clones have me working a triple shift just so they can practice for the show.”
Jude and Wyatt stated that they were entering the contest. Wyatt was going to try a new song and Jude would try some extreme skating stunts. “First prize is a-thousand big ones, dude!” and he wasn't going to sit around here. “Gotta bounce. Gotta' practice.”
Wyatt decided to go and practice too. “Later.”
Nikki left too. “Khaki-Barn shift here I come. Ugh!”
Jen had to leave for the Penalty-Box, and it was time for me to open Comic-Cavern so I had to go too. “See ya, Caitlin.”
“Bye.”
As I walked away, leaving Caitlin all alone. I saw how lonely she looked, but her loneliness wasn't really that bad. Not like mine…!
Even after I had done my game intro at Comic-Cavern, and the early rush had ceased. I found myself alone for a while in my big store. It was still mid-morning. Kids were still in school, and adults still at work.
I decided to catch up a bit on my own comic-book prototypes to send to my publisher. I gazed at the wall of fame where all ten pictures of us stood, and the marquis lights were blinking around the frames, perfect for my store Super Pay Cards music. Still, gazing that deeply at the pictures of my friends and me, I began to have that dream again, even though I wasn't asleep.
Same plot… Same music… Same horror… Same gasping wake-up. “Ah…!” Same lonely feeling I knew I'd get by the end of the day when I'd have to go home to my apartment across the street. I'd be alone… by myself until the next day.
I couldn't help but sigh, and then I walked up into my private sanctuary to play my keyboard again. It was that same song I played before. Only this time I played it without my headphones in. I even turned on my computers new audio program, and attuned it to sing some words I had recorded using my own voice in different tones.
During part of the song you could hear them singing softly…
I wanna know what love is
I want you to show me
I wanna feel what love is
I know you can show me
“Ahh…” I sighed as I felt better, but then I could hear the sound of someone applauding. I turned to the door, which I had left a crack, open, and there was “Amelie…?”
My girlfriend giggled and said “'Oo else?”
She stopped by the store while on her break, and thought she'd see me, and she heard the music playing from outside. “Oh, that…” I said nervously trying not to let her know what it was. “It's just something I've been throwing together. Like… like a joke… yeah.”
She still thought it was beautiful, and if I knew one thing about my girlfriend is that she never played with someone just to be nice. She meant it. Still, I didn't tell her about my nightmares and the blue feelings I was going through as I didn't want to worry her.
I stopped playing and sat down on the sofa next to her, but the song and voices continues to play and it felt soothing. We even shared a soft kiss, and that really made me feel a whole lot better.
Soon, afterwards, she had to head back to work, but we made plans for a date on the weekend. “I'll miss you.” She flirted with me.
“Miss you more, cheri'.” I flirted back with a fake French accent. We kissed again, and she left, no sooner had she did my friends stop by. “Someone's been wooing with his girl.” Jen teased.
I rubbed the back of my head shyly. “What can I say?” I said, and I couldn't think of anything so, “…What can I say?”
That's when everyone heard the music that was still playing. I quickly turned it off. “Uh… so… what brings you guys here?” I asked. Wyatt initially wanted to play his new song for the whole gang here in my sanctuary, but now everyone seemed to be interested in that song that was playing. “It's beautiful…” said Caitlin. “Are there any lyrics to it…?”
“Uh… lyrics…? Uh… oh yeah, yeah-- there's lyrics.”
Wyatt admitted he didn't know what that song was I was working with but it sounded cool to him too. “Mykan have you considered entering the talent-show?” he asked.
I acted a more nervous than before. “Are you feeling okay?” asked Nikki.
I lied and said I was feeling fine. “I just don't think I should enter… especially with this song. It uh… it… it could give me an unfair advantage.”
“Get outta' here…” Jonesy said. “Since when are you so nervous about your own music anyway…?”
Jonesy had a point. Everyone knew I was just as good a music man as Wyatt. Like the time I sang at my brother's wedding and we reconciled. Even when I sang November Rain on the mall jumbotron to help solve everyone's romantic problems, even my own…
“You should enter.” suggested Jen. “I'll bet you or Wyatt at least will get first place. You could even make each other look good, like you're a team.”
Everyone seemed to go for that, even Wyatt. I didn't think it was a good idea though. If I actually sang that song I was playing… then they'd probably know of my nightmares, and worse… people in the mall would probably start to know of my hard past.
“A… All right… I guess I could try.” I suddenly said. The gang all smiled and then we all sat down to hear Wyatt's song for the contest, but all through I didn't really pay attention. “What have I done?” I thought to myself.
Author's notes:
Mykan is playing only an instrumental version of Foreigner's “I wanna know what love is”
So when he really sings it next chapter, then it's the actual song, nevertheless I don't own the rights… but it's a beautiful song, and just right for what Mykan's feeling.
Don't believe me? Well play it then… you'll see.
