"Of course I remember. Unless I remember to forget. In that sense of the meaning I forget to remember to forget." The Mad Hatter smirked at her, his eyes taking her in. "Have you gotten taller or have I gotten shorter?"

Alice stepped back and twirled around for him. "I am a lady now, Mr. Hatter," she said sweetly. "Have you missed me?"

"Why yes, you are a lady," he smirked. "You have blossomed quite nicely, Alice. I missed you as much as I miss myself at times." There was a pause as she looked at him. "I'm afraid you've been gone far too long, Alice. Wonderland is not the same as you once knew." He reached out, moving some hair behind her ear.

Alice looked around. Yes, things had changed. The skies were dark, like rain was coming. The colors of the flowers for pale and the ground was cracked. "What has happened to my lovely Wonderland?"

"The Red Queen has gone mad. More so than ever," he lamented. "The residents have even started to go crazy. They almost make me look sane." He pouted at that. He was suppose to be the crazy one. Not them. "The White Queen is locked in her tower, and the White King is dead."

Her eyes grew wide. "Oh my..." she whispered. "Where is Mr. Cat and White Rabbit?"

He shrugged playfully. "Here. There. Everywhere. A few of the maidens were running away from something not too long ago. It is a safe bet that the Cat is off enjoying himself. I have not seen the Rabbit in quite some time."

"He was kidnapped...you rescued him..." she said. Suddenly she grabbed her head. "Or was that all a dream...or a dream of a dream of me and of you...."

The Mad Hatter smiled at this. He was behind Alice in a flash, his hands at her hips as he nuzzled her neck. "And just what did you dreams about me involve? Were they naughty?"

Alice dropped her hand and smiled. "Those are your dreams...mine are..." her smile faded, "sad."

"Well, we have plenty of sadness to go around here in Wonderland," he sighed, his hand lifting up her ruffled skirt playfully as he felt her stockings. "It is good to see you again, Alice."

Alice turned to him. "It is my un-birthday today, Mr. Hatter."

"That it is!" His eyes seemed to shine in merriment. "And what do you wish to have on your very merry un-birthday?"

"The same present I got on my last un-birthday, silly," she said sweetly. Her hands fixed his top hat then she smiled. "Do you remember?"

He leaned down, his hand caressing her face. "How could I forget? I'm yours, remember?" Leaning down, he kissed her. His lips massaged her. Sweet. Tender. Yet with a tiny bit of hunger behind them.

Alice placed her hands on his chest as she stepped towards him. This was the perfect kiss. Her heart twisted and hopped. Her lips washed over his, deepening the kiss as she felt her skin go hot. He smiled, daring her further as he parted his lips, his tongue dancing across hers so that he could taste her. He could feel the warmth of her flesh as she pressed against him. Yes. She had become a lady. Alice was taken back but didn't end the kiss. She pressed against him, letting her tongue meet his. She could count her kisses on one hand and all had been with him, but none were as wonderful as this one. With her pressed against him, it was all too easy for him to tell just how she had grown. He could feel her every curve. His arms slipped around her waist, grabbing at the back of her skirt as he let his tongue explore her mouth. When he was through, he pulled back slowly.

"You still taste just as sweet."

She blushed. "Only you would know...besides Mr. Cat."

"Yes, well the Cat wants you to taste other parts of him." He sighed and pouted. "He said it tasted like candy. He lied!"

Alice stepped back from him. "That is rather gross, Mr. Hatter. You should know better than to listen to the cat. He is a liar."

"Yes, but you know as well as I do Alice, that every truth is a lie and every lie is a truth."

"Yes, but I know not to trust that cat on everything he says." She turned from him and started walking. "We must find our friends. I wish to say hello to them."

He hopped after her, landing right beside her and keeping up with her every step. "Now why must we ruin our fund time with them? The White Rabbit barely calls and never writes; and the Cat is always disappearing just when I'm starting to have fun. They're no fun at all."

"Yes but they are my friends and they care about me just as I care about them. Besides, Mr. Cat will be very mad with you if you keep me all to yourself," she said as they entered the forest where the Cheshire Cat normally dwelled.

The Hatter frowned. Tucking his hands behind his head, he began whistling a random tune. With Alice back, it almost felt like the old days, back when the sky was bright and the flowers pretty.

"My, my, my, oh tell me why...." A phantom voice echoed through the forest and soon he appeared. Or rather a certain part of him did. It stood there, floating at eye level for all to see. "Why such a maiden I-" There was a pause. "Alice!"" Suddenly the Cat appeared in all his glory. Landing on his feet, he pulled up his pants and stared at her. "You're really back."

Alice blushed brightly. "Mr. Cat...that is not very appropriate..."

He gave her a fanged grin. "But my dear Alice. You rather enjoyed the sight did you not? In which case it was appropriate."

The Hatter groaned at this.

"I am a lady, Mr. Cat. My enjoy isn't the issue here. Where are you manners? Have I taught you nothing?" she said smiling but waving her finger at him.

The Cat just smirked as he caught her finger in his mouth and sucked gently on it. "But did you enjoy it?"

Again, she blushed and pulled her finger out of his mouth, cutting herself on his fang. She stepped back into the Hatter's chest and looked at her finger as blood lightly covered it. "As I have said, my enjoyment is not the issue. You should learn to behave in company such as me." Yes, so much has changed in Wonderland.

The Cat smirked, licking his lips and shrugging. "Well then, that is neither here nor there; and now neither am I." He began to fade away, only his fanged grin remaining before he disappeared completely.

The Hatter took her finger into his mouth and sucked on his gently until the blood quit flowing. After which he took out a handkerchief and tied it around her finger. "There you go, Alice. I told you that Cat was no good."

She smiled at him then kissed his cheek. "But I always have you to rely on, Mr. Hatter." She looked back into the blackness of the forest. "Mr. Cat!" she called. "We are trying to find the White Rabbit and then we are going to restore Wonderland, will you not come?"

"Only you can restore Wonderland, Alice. Nothing I nor anyone else can do will help."

"I am afraid that the Cat has long since chosen to be the Queen's pet," the Hatter sighed.

Alice stomped her foot. "No friend of the Queen is a friend of mine, Mr. Cat!" she yelled. "I am very disappointed and rather hurt!" she added and started out of the forest. She would go to the White Rabbits house to see if he was there.

Matthew pushed the I.V. into her arm so that he could flush her system of the sedative. She was barely breathing at this point. Staring down at her, he noticed a tiny cut on her finger. When did she get that? "Wake up, Alice," he said softly.

"I'm afraid that before you can visit the White Rabbit you must wake up." The Hatter pouted at this.

Alice turned to the Hatter. "Wake up? I don't understand. I am-" Suddenly Wonderland began to fade. "Mr. Hatter! Don't leave me!" she yelled and ran to him, but the faster she ran, the further he got until everything went black. Alice suddenly felt cold then without warning, she jolted.

She opened her eyes and looked at Matthew. Her head turned to the side and she noticed she was back in the gray room with stone walls and bars on the window. Her Hatter was normal looking again with glasses and feathered hair. She shook her head in disbelief. How could this happen? She was there. She touched it, she felt it. Now...it was all gone. Would she ever get to go back?

Matthew sighed in relief as she opened her eyes. "I was afraid that they had overdosed you and put you into a coma." That was all he needed, for him to lose another patient to negligence.

Alice began to cry. "I was there...we were there...this isn't fair."

"Shh, it's okay, Alice." He reached up and stroked her hair. "You were in Wonderland again?"

She nodded with tears. "It wasn't the same. It was dark and black. The Red Queen had gone mad and the White Rabbit is missing. And the Cheshire Cat...he joined her! All I have is you, my Mad Hatter...and now it's all gone...all of it..."

He found this rather curious. "So Wonderland has gone...crazy." He used that for lack of a term that she would likely understand. "And the Red Queen is the cause of this?"

Alice nodded. "And the White Rabbit is missing. The Cheshire Cat said the only person who can fix Wonderland is me but I'm all alone...because that stupid cat ditched me..." She grabbed his hand and noticed her finger. "See this?" she said holding her finger up for him. "He flashed me, then sucked my finger and cut me with his fang. He is so inappropriate."

She was prone to rather...absurd delusions. However, there might be some truth to this. "So, you have to stop the red Queen? What will happen if you stop her?"

She looked at the bared window. "I suppose Wonderland will go back to normal. It's such a lovely place." She placed her fingers on her lips. "I almost forgot our kiss. It was so different this time. You used your tongue..."

"I what!?" He rubbed his temples. She was telling him now that he frenched her?

She sat up, pulling at the IV. "It's ok," she said stroking his head. "I liked it. And I won't tell Mr. Cat because we both know how jealous he is."

Matthew was shocked when she started stroking his head as if it was the most natural thing to do. "Yes, he is jealous," he said softly, remembering his notes on the so called Cheshire Cat.

She snuggled into his chest. "I'm sorry about what I said before, about me not wanting to see you anymore. I am such a liar sometimes." She clung to him. "Please don't leave me again. Tweedledum and Tweedledee attacked me while you were away and I called for you. Usually you come right away..."

"I cannot stay with you always," he told her. "I have other patients to tend to, and you are not allowed to wander the halls."

She pulled from in and pushed her back against the head board of her bed. She was afraid, that was obvious. And he didn't care. She shook her head. "You aren't him, are you?" she whispered. "You are not my Mad Hatter..."

"I have told you this many times before," he told her. Why did she suddenly now start to believe him?

Yes, he wasn't the one. Her Mad Hatter would never leave her, especially if she was afraid. Pulling her legs to herself she ripped the IV from her arm. "Then I was right to cast you away. You are nothing more than a liar and you can't help me..." she said. "No one can help me...no one understands..." she added with a whispered.

"I'm trying to understand, Alice. You're just making it extremely difficult on me," he told her. "One minute you're a perfect lady. The next, you're...well...." Crazy.

She shook her head. "I have told you everything I know! I have yelled and explained and still you don't get it!" she yelled. Her arm was bleeding again from where she ripped the IV out. "You can't help me, you can't protect me, you are useless!"

"What would have me do, Alice?" He looked at her, watching as her blood dripped onto her bed and gown. This was getting tiresome.

She looked at him, her face softened. "Believe me."

There was a pause, he stared at her, his lips tightening. "I do believe you," he told her. He believed that she believed that Wonderland was real.

She smiled. "Then it shouldn't be so hard for you to make the medication stop and to make the twins leave me alone."

"I will try to do my best," he assured her. "Though the twins orders do not come solely from me."

"They touched me," she said. "I saw them."

His eyes narrowed as he heard this. "How exactly did they touch you?"

She placed her hand on her chest. "Like your examinations."

Matthew sighed. There was little he could do about that. The words of an insane patients versus those of her orderlies was not something he wished to tangle with. "I'll try to keep them from your room," he told her.

"You have to protect me! I'm a girl!"

He smirked at this. "Gender does not qualify for protection," he told her. "Though I will do my best to make certain that nothing like that happens again."

She held her legs to herself tighter while her gown soaked in blood. "I wish...I wish you were him. He would never leave me...he would protect me..."

"Yes, well, at least I am reasonably sane." He shrugged at that and held out his hand. "Now let me fix your arm before you bleed out."

She looked at him coldly. "No. I would rather bleed to death. At least then I wouldn't have to bother you so much." She looked down and saw her rabbit. Soaking it, she sighed. "Just get out. We both know you don't want to be here. After all, you have other crazy people to see."

He sighed at this. "Very well, Alice. If that is your wish then I will see you in the morning." He didn't have time for this. There were other patients of his who actually wanted to get better. To be freed from their madness. All she wanted to do was to run back to hers.

Alice grabbed the sheets and ripped it into a strip. She tied it around her arm to stop the blood. It's something the Mad Hatter would do. She picked up her rabbit and held it tightly. Nothing would stop what was going to happen. She was going to be used and abused and the only escape she would have would be sleep. Already she was planning her next attempt to end it all.

Matthew followed his rounds normally. Taking care of his patients, going through the rigors the daily life. Still his mind went back to Alice. She was troubling him, more so than she should. By the time it was dinner time, he ventured back to Alice's room to check on her.

Alice was pacing in her room when Matthew came in. She had all her bandages off and had opened her wounds, letting the blood cover the floor and her body. In her hand was her rabbit, now stained in blood and being drug on the ground by its ears.

Matthew's eyes widened as he saw her. "Get in bed now!" he snapped as he started grabbing new bandages for her.

"Don't tell me what to do," she said ignoring him. "I won't be a victim. I won't be used," she said. Tears streaked her face as she glanced at the door. She had been expecting the twins all day and she had hoped to be passed out or dead before their visit.

He grabbed her and threw her to the bed. He quickly straddled her to hold her down while he tried to bandage her wounds and stop the bleeding. "You won't be anything if you're dead."

"That's the plan," she snapped and fought against him.

He groaned. Staring down at her, he roughly pressed his lips against hers. Letting his tongue work her mouth while he took care of her wounds.

Alice relaxed but she didn't close her eyes or kiss back. After a few moments, she pushed at his chest until he broke the kiss. "Don't do that."
