"Why not?" His voice was soft, he tried to keep her calm while he tightened the bandages on her arm.

"You don't get privileges just because you are here. You don't get to do this then walk away no strings attached. I may be what you call crazy, but I am not stupid."

"What do you mean?" No strings attached. Did she believe that he wanted to be with her?

"You know what I mean. Now get off me and get out," she said sternly.

"Not until I'm certain that you will not harm yourself," he told her.

"Then you will be sitting here all night," she said and turned her head to the side. "You should get comfortable. I don't sleep much when I'm scared."

"And why are you scared, exactly?"

"You know why I am scared! You never listen to me! Stop asking so many damn questions and just listen for once!" She was beginning to hate him. How could he have ever been her perfect Mad Hatter?

"I have already told you that they will not return here. You have no reason to be afraid of them," he told her. They had only groped her. It wasn't as if they had raped her.

"You also said you can't control them. What will keep them from doing more to me when you aren't here? Go home. Go home to your perfect like with your perfect bed and perfect freedom. I'll take care of myself," she said coldly as she looked away from him again.

"I can give them orders and speak to the Director," he told her. "If they are indeed mishandling the patients than they shall be terminated."

"And you?" she said and looked at him again. "You kissed me...and you touch me."

"I kissed you to calm you," he told her. "And I only touch you during my medical examinations."

"Blah blah. Either way you look at it, you are just as bad," she said.

"You have never complained before," he told her bluntly. "As I said, I only kissed you to calm you and only touch you to make certain that there's nothing wrong with you."

She looked at her arms at the bandages. "Before...you reminded me so much of him...I didn't mind. I felt like you were him."

"Other than my so called resemblance to him, there was nothing in my behavior which would compare to him." She was starting to separate fact from fiction. This was good.

"You visit and talk sweet to me. You confuse me a lot of the time and for a long time, I thought you wanted to protect me. That's exactly him. In lots of ways...you are him..." She looked at him. "Are you ever going to get off me?"

"Are you going to try and hurt yourself?"

"Not at the moment," she said with a shrug. God, she missed Wonderland so much, even though it was dark and cold.

He watched her for any sign of deceit. Slowly he crawled off of her. Pulling her chair over, he sat down beside her bed. "If you try anything like that again I will have to confine you to a jacket."

She shrugged again. "I don't mind the jacket," she said honestly. "It's like hugging myself for hours on end."

He smirked at that. "Yes, that is what it is suppose to do," he told her. "However, I'm certain that you would enjoy some slight freedom more."

She curled into a ball. "I had freedom...in Wonderland..."

"Alice, you do realize that this is the real world, correct? Wonderland may be real to you, but it is not real to the rest of us."

"I know. No one has ever passed between both worlds except me," she said. "So of course no one would know about it but me."

Well, it was a start. "Would you like to have tea in the garden tomorrow, Alice?"

She sat up quickly. "I can leave the room? I can go outside? Can I dress for it?"

"Tomorrow we will keep it simple," he told her. "You can go out in your gown, but if your nice and follow orders than maybe next time we can find a dress for you to wear."

She laid back down. "Fine. I'll play your little game," she said slowly. She pulled her blood stained rabbit to her. Still, he wouldn't talk to her and she couldn't understand why.

"And what game is that?" His eyes trailed over her, wondering how much clarity she had at the moment.

"Whatever game you are trying to get me to play to get you inside my head. Just so you know, you're not invited inside," she explained. Her poor rabbit wasn't so white anymore. She turned and forced her back to him, her gown rising up over her thighs as she did so. Staring at the wall, she willed it to bend, to show her Wonderland.

He watched as the gown raised up her thigh. He swallowed hard as he stared at the creamy flesh. "We should get you a larger gown," he said softly. "They keep giving you a child's gown; and you are no longer a child."

"It fits me just fine. If I'm not complaining, then you shouldn't either." She shifted, her gown rising higher again. "You didn't examine me today."

He swallowed hard again. "You just got through telling me how bad I was for examining you. Do you want me to check you over?"

She sat up and slid to the edge of the bed, her bare legs touching his pants. "Do you think you can resist?"

He stared down between her legs where her gown had risen. Looking up at her, he licked his lips. "Resist what?" What was she trying to do?

She pushed her hair behind her ears. "There you go, asking question you already have answers to. You know what I'm talking about." Alice was one of the three other female patients in the whole hospital. She would have been sent to a female insane asylum, but her case was too sever and she needed special care so she was sent to the top asylum in the country. She was also the youngest of the females. It made her prefect pray for young workers.

He fixed his glasses and stared down at his work sheet. "Whatever you are insinuating I am fairly certain that it would go against moral and political ethics for me to do anything with a patient."

Alice shrugged. "It has never stopped you before."

"I have never done anything to you," he told her. "Nothing that could be described as a sexual act." She was starting to sound more normal. More like a teenage girl than a rambling sociopath.

"So groping my chest isn't part of that? You avoid touching every inch of me during you examination until your eyes fall on my breasts. Admit it, you can't resist."

He stiffened and pretended to write on his notepad. "I check your breasts for lumps caused by medication. That is all," he said slowly.

"Call it what you want. We both know the truth. Don't worry, I won't tell. Not yet at least," she said. She pulled his clipboard from him and began to read it. "For someone who says you believe me, you sure do call me insane a lot."

He pulled his clipboard back from her. "Yes, well, you're acting more sane right now than you have been in quite a while." He wrote something down again and stared at her. "If you do in fact believe that I wish to do more to you, why do you tempt me rather than try and stop it?"

She pointed around her. "Does it look like I have anything else going on in my life? I live in a box, I'm drugged up most of the time, and the only people I talk to are those who think I'm crazy."

"That still doesn't answer my question," he told her. "Are you implying that you'd do something, simply to avoid the monotonous boredom of your life?"

"Possibly," she said shrugging. "I'm going to die in this place. I'm never going to get out. Mostly because I'll never say what you want me to say. I know Wonderland is real and I know that the Mad Hatter is real. I won't say otherwise just so I can leave this prison."

"You're not in this so called 'prison' because of your delusions of Wonderland," he told her. "You're here because the state does not believe that you are mentally well enough to go out into society. When you first came here, when your Aunt signed the papers for you to come, the reports say that you were in a comatose state. You didn't move or do anything for yourself. You've improved over the years. However, your sanity, your rationality comes and goes. Right now you seem perfectly normal, yet at other times you are not."

"So what? Who cares? Everyone is a little mad. I just happen to be a little more mad on certain days. What is wrong with that?" She laid back down and curled into a ball again. "Don't you have a life outside this place? Like a wife or something? You spend too much time on asking me questions and not enough enjoying your sanity."

He chuckled at that. "I work at an asylum. My sanity is relative in a place like this." He finished writing down his notes and yawned. "I will be going now. Are you going to hurt yourself tonight?"

"Go away. What I do in my time alone is private."

"Not when I'm your physician," he told her with a yawn. "I can sit right here all night if I have to."

"You do that then. I promise you I won't care."

He smirked at this. Why would she offer such a thing. Shifting in the chair, he sighed. "Very well, but only so that I might keep you from doing anything," he stated, making his reasons adamantly clear.

"Aren't you the noble man?" she smirked. She patted the bed next to her. "It will be like a sleep over. A half dressed girl and her handsome, annoying doctor."

"That actually sounds more like the opening to a naughty movie," he said as he crawled into the bed beside her. "Sleepovers is something that girls do with each other, rather than doctors."

"I haven't seen another girl in six years. I don't think it really matters." She snuggled up to him and wrapped a bandaged arm around him while she held her rabbit with her other hand. "Goodnight, Mr. Hatter." She closed her eyes and yawned against him.

He froze as she did this. Why did he crawl into the bed with her? How did he allow himself to get into such a position? He frowned at his own stupidity. "Goodnight, Alice," he said, hoping that she wasn't getting too comfortable in this position.

For once, Alice slept peacefully without plaguing dreams of her life or of Wonderland. She had no dreams and barely moved all night. It was the first time in a long time she was able to sleep without the help of drugs.

He woke up first, as he had hoped he would. Looking at her, he found that she was still hugged closely to him. He started to move, trying to escape her grasp without her waking.

Alice's eyes snapped open as he started to move. She looked up at him and smiled. "Mr. Hatter, how lovely that you stayed."

He pushed his glasses up, their faces just inches apart. "Yes, well I was rather tired. I did not sleep the night before," he told her as he started to get out of her bed.

Alice grabbed at him. "Oh won't you stay, just for a while longer? We can just talk of our adventures in Wonderland. I promise I won't mention Mr. Cat."

It seemed that she was acting delusional again. "I need to change and I need some tea." He was going to say he needed coffee, but tea would be more pleasing to her. "At lunch we will have our tea party. Okay?"

She sat up. "It's so nice of you to throw me another tea party. Are we celebrating my un-birthday? Do I get a present?" she asked sweetly.

He looked at her, curious as to how she was able to go between personas so easily. He also wondered how much she retained mentally. "Do you want another present?"

She nodded quickly with a smile. "Oh, yes please!"

He bit his lip. He shouldn't do this. He really really shouldn't do this. Leaning forward, he pressed his lips to hers. Alice smiled into the kiss and leaned in closer to him. Lightly, she placed her hands on his chest and opened her mouth, sliding her tongue along his lips. His eyes widened as she attempted to french him. There was hesitation before he opened his lips to allow her to explore to her heart's content. Where did she learn to do this? She moved one hand to his face as her tongue danced in his mouth. Her heart was racing and her body was growing hot. Oh how she loved her Mad Hatter's kisses. He slowly wrapped his arms around her while she kissed him. Her tongue in his mouth felt odd, yet he rather enjoyed it. His tongue swirled around hers while he held her, trying hard to keep his own thoughts in check. Alice moaned lightly and pressed tightly against him. Her body tingled with desire and she couldn't imagine the last time she had felt so much at one time. She never wanted the feeling to fade.

He stiffened as she moaned. Pulling back slowly, he looked over her. "I believe that is enough for your gift," he whispered.

She wanted to pout but she nodded instead. "Will I get another one at the party? Is Mr. Cat invited to come too? I'm sure he will have a present for me as well."

"No," he said slowly. "This will be a private party. Just so that we can chat."

She nodded. "I understand," she said.

"Good. I will come get you and lunch then." With that he fixed his shirt, biting his lip as he started to exit. He felt like he was losing his mind. Doing that with a patient. What was he thinking?

Alice was allowed to shower and change into a fresh gown. She was monitored while she brushed her hair in the mirror and put a blue ribbon on the side of her head. Afterward, she sat in her room playing with her bandages while she waited.
