Around lunchtime, Matthew had finally finished with his patient. The poor man's lobotomy hadn't gone nearly as well as he had hoped. Hopefully he wouldn't need that portion of his brain. Shrugging it off, he put on clean clothes as he went to the kitchen. "Is everything set up?"

The nurse smirked, leaning against him, he purred into Matthew's chest. "Yes, but I wish we were having tea instead."

Matthew rolled his eyes and scooted away. "This is not what you think," he told him. "I'm simply trying to get her to open up."

Fixing his shirt, he went up to her room to get her. Upon opening the door, he was surprised at how pretty she looked. Undoubtedly the nurse had something to do with that. "Are you ready?"

Alice stood with a smile. This was the first time she got to leave her room in nearly two years. She walked over to him and took his hand. "I am so excited. We haven't had a tea party in a long time."

He looked down at her hand in his. In his other hand was his notebook. He nodded and pulled her along with him until they reached the fenced in garden area. He motioned to her seat while he took his own. "How did you sleep last night?"

She stroked her rabbit and sat down. It wasn't a large party like most of the Mad Hatter's parties, but it would do. "Fine, thank you. Since you were there, I slept better. Like back in Wonderland," she said as she fixed her tea. She looked under the table to see if perhaps the door mouse was hiding under there, but there was nothing but grass. She reached her hand down and felt the grass. Grabbing a handful of it, she tucked it into her gown pocket. She might not get to see grass for a while so she wanted to keep some. She looked around, enjoying the wind in her hair and the warm sky above her. Her short gown rose to her high thighs as she sat straight in her chair.

The table had no decorative cover, so he was able to get a perfect view of her legs as she sat. He tried to keep his focus, her words from last night echoing in his head. Perhaps that was why he lobbed off the wrong portion of the guy's brain. He thought that over for a moment before shrugging it off. "I am glad that you slept well," he said softly. "Though I hope you realize that was a one time thing."

"I don't believe that," she said and sipped her tea. "We slept together all the time in Wonderland. Why should it be any different here? You love sleeping with me. You said so yourself."

He cleared his throat, taking a bite out of a small cake to hide his obvious discomfort. "Yes, well, it is harder to do now," he said softly. He hoped that she didn't tell anyone else that.

She looked up as him as she placed a cake on her blood stained rabbit's lap then took a cake herself. "Why? You did it last night without difficulty."

"That was under extenuating circumstances," he told her. He tried to change the subject. "Have you seen glimpses of Wonderland lately?"

She shook her head sadly. "No...not yet..." she whispered as she played with her tea. "I'm afraid that I might not be able to return...do you think it is because I am growing too old?" She tilted her head at him. "It's a silly thought, I know, but maybe that is why you are here and not in Wonderland...because you are mine and we belong together so if I can't go back you won't go back. You think?"

"It is a possibility," he said slowly. "After all, you belong here; and not in Wonderland."

"But if I belong here, then you belong there. You are from Wonderland after all...yet you are here, with me. So if you can be here and you can be there then I should be able to be there and here as well. It's only fair." She shrugged and nibbled on her cake. A leaf fell from a tree and landed into her lap, she stood. She walked over to fence and placed her hands on it, looking out at the meadow she would never step foot on. "It seems odd that I must spend my time in this world behind walls and fences but in Wonderland I can go where I please and do as I wish." The wind blew at her, making her gown flap and her hair dance. "I suppose I don't understand why I am in this place...though, I am glad that you are with me...and Mr. Cat....when he visits." She looked at her rabbit now sitting in her chair with the cake in his lap as she clung to the fence. "At least they talk to me, White Rabbit!"

Matthew shook his head slowly. Despite being crazy, she had her own twisted logic which seemed to work. If it weren't for the fact that the Mad Hatter was nothing but a figment of her own twisted fantasy then he would have to agree with her. "Since you have not had any visits from Wonderland lately, I would like to put you back on your medicine," he told her.

"No!" she said turning to him. "It's only been a day...I think...possibly..."

He sighed. "Very well. You shall have one more day," he told her.

She grabbed her rabbit and began to pace. One day. That's all she got? She looked at the meadow again. How could she get back to Wonderland? How could she find herself slipping back into... Wait. It was the drug...whatever the twins gave her. She snapped her head to Matthew. "I want the drug...the one Tweedledum and Tweedledee gave me," she said. "I need it."

He shook his head. "That is out of the question," he told her. "It's an experimental solution which nearly killed you."

She slammed her fist on the table. "You don't know anything! I was there, damn it! I was there and the drug took me there! I have to go back! I just have to!" she screamed in rage.

"I know that you nearly died from it," he told her calmly. "And that is all I really need to know."

Once more she began to pace. She looked at him then at the door to the asylum. Once more, she looked at him then dashed to the door. She ran down the halls. "Mr. Cat! Mr. Cat!" she called. "I need your assistance! Please, Mr. Cat!"

"Alice, get back here!" Damn it. Why did she have to go and make trouble like this?

'Mr. Cat' was stepping out of the hallway as he saw her running toward him. A smile flashed on his face as he waved to her. "How are you doing, Alice?"

"Oh, Mr. Cat!" she cried and hugged him tightly. "I need your help but you can't tell Mr. Hatter. You must find out the drug I was given the other day and I must have it again. Please, Mr. Cat. Please, please! I promise I'll make it up to you," she begged into his chest. "I'll do anything you say."

Mr. Cat looked up just in time to see Matthew standing behind her. "I'm afraid that's not possible, Alice," he said as he took her hand. "'Mr. Cat' isn't allowed to give you any medicine without my permission."

Alice pulled from him and clung back to Mr. Cat. "You are not the Mr. Hatter I know! Impostor!" she snapped. "Just wait until I tell the Red Queen! Off with your head!"

Matthew shook his head and sighed. "Take her back to her room," he said.

The nurse looked down at Alice and nodded. "Come on," he said as he pulled her with him. "Let's go to your room."

Alice glared at Matthew for a moment longer before holding onto Mr. Cat for life. She was so confused. Her Mad Hatter would do anything to make her happy and yet this Hatter wouldn't let her do anything. She didn't know who she could trust anymore. And now she was relying on Mr. Cat who she would normally only go to in the most desperate of times. She looked up at him as they walked into her room.

"Please, Mr. Cat. You have to go invisible and get the drug. I'll do anything. I'll do whatever you say," she pleaded, now completely desperate.

The nurse stroked her hair as they walked. "Alice, that drug nearly killed you," he said. "If you take it again, the meanie doctor might not be able to pull you out."

She looked at him with soft eyes. "Who says I want to wake up?"

"Surely you can't mean what you're saying, Alice," he whispered.

"Of course I do. I never say things I don't mean unless I mean them to trick someone in which case I say those things but this is not the case. I mean it. Wonderland needs me, Mr. Cat. You said so yourself. And I...I need Wonderland too..." she said back without hesitation.

He sighed, stroking her face gently. "I'll see, Alice," he whispered. Guiding her deeper into her room, he motioned to her bed. "Why don't you take a nap? Maybe you'll feel better then."

She grabbed his hands. "Will you stay with me? Until I call asleep at least?" she asked as she sat on her bed.

He had other work to attend to, but how could he resist this charming girl? "I will stay till you fall asleep, but not a moment later," he told her.

She smiled and laid down, her hands still holding onto his. "I don't care what Mr. Hatter says. I still think you are my friend, Mr. Cat. Don't worry, you won't be the pet for the Queen for long. I'll set her straight and set you free..." she mumbled with a yawn. She tried to keep her eyes opened as cat ears appeared on his head and a tail pushed hair from her face then moved lower to her gown. She smiled bigger. "Silly, kitty. Mr. Hatter won't be happy with that..." she mumbled again and let sleep close her eyes and drift her off.

The nurse shook his head as she fell asleep. "Such a strange girl," he whispered. Moving hair out of her face, he started off to check on his other duties.

Alice woke slowly later in the day and sat up. She looked around. Her bared window showed that it was night out. Sighing, she was once again all alone, however, in the moonlight, she could see a little bottle with words on it sitting on her night stand. Reaching over she picked it up and read the words. "Drink me..." she whispered. Smiling she opened the top and downed the drink. "Ughh! Yuck!" she said.

Suddenly, her body went stiff and she slumped back, falling onto her pillow. She stared at the ceiling as it erupted into a dark gray sky. Her bed suddenly felt hard yet soft. Slowly she sat up and looked around. Once more, she was in her Wonderland. Her hands ran over the grass she sat in and she smiled.

"I am home..."

"It's about time too," the Hatter mumbled. He was sitting before an enormous table with cakes and tea pots, sugar, honey, candy, and cookies. "The tea is almost cold."

Alice stood and brushed the grass from her white outfit then fixed her little top hat. "Oh, Mr. Hatter!" she said and danced to him. "It's so lovely to see you this way!" She hugged him tightly. "I was afraid I would never return!" She sat next to him and smiled at the spread on the table. "Happy un-birthday!"

"Happy un-birthday, Alice!" He fixed himself a pipe, lighting it and taking a long puff from it. A sigh escaped his lips as he looked over at her. "Well, help yourself," he said. "Tea is only enjoyable when you have someone to enjoy it with."

Alice giggled and started sipping her tea. She moaned. "Just like I remember. Perfect." She looked over at him as the smoke danced into multiple shapes. "You are so much better here than you are there. Mr. Hatter...I prefer you this way." She sipped again on her tea and took a bite from the cake. "We should go to the White Rabbit's house today."

He smirked and nodded at this. "Well, I am glad that you prefer me as I am," he told her. Taking a long drag, he let out the smoke, letting it take on the form of the white rabbit. Another smoke later sent a smoke arrow through the rabbit, making him disappear. "Yes. We shall go see the White Rabbit. He still owes me a new hat."

She finished her tea and stood. "Come! Let us go!" she said and held out her hand. She looked back at the table just in time to see the door mouse hurry to get the left overs. She smiled and laughed. "I'm sure the White Rabbit will be excited to see us."

The Hatter took her hand, his fingers intertwining around hers. "Yes," he said with a nod. "After all, you'd have to be mad not to love me."

As they started toward his house, it seemed that it started to get darker. As they drew upon it, the Hatter stopped and sniffed. "Hm, it smells like someone is cooking rabbit stew." Upon drawing closer, his eyes widened as he came to the realization that the Rabbit's house was on fire! Or rather, it had been on fire. Now it was nothing more than burnt ashes of what it use to have been. "No! My hat!" His poor hat had been in there! What had they done?

Alice paled. Suddenly there was a flash and she was standing outside her own home, looking at the ashes of her family and belongings. She turned her head for a second then looked again and she was back at the White Rabbit's house. Tears began to pour from her eyes. "Mr. Rabbit!" she screamed as if she had been stabbed in the heart. It was blood curling and piercing. The sky flashed with lightening and crashed around her and the Mad Hatter.

Alice ran fast to the ashes of the house and started digging through them. "Mr. Rabbit! Please, Mr. Rabbit! Say something! Tell me you are ok!" she cried over and over. Her tears drowned the ashes and soon the sky opened and it began to pour. She dug through the mushiness of the ashes and looked for any sign of white.

"Alice!" The Hatter was behind her, holding onto her, pulling her back from the decimated ashes of the house. "He wasn't in there," he assured her. "He's not dead." There was a yet implied somewhere in that statement.

Alice shook her head. "It's all my fault! It's all my fault!" she cried. "I'm so sorry, Mr. Rabbit!" she said. She turned to the Hatter and hugged him tightly, burring her face in his chest. "Mother...Father...I'm so sorry..." she whispered. "I will find you, Mr. Rabbit! I will find you!"

He hugged her, gently stroking her back. "It's okay, Alice," he whispered. "There was nothing you could have done. This fire was out of your control."

"I left a candle on...I left it in his room. He didn't know...he told me not to light the candle but I wanted to and I didn't listen. I never listen, Mr. Hatter," she said. She looked up at him. "We must find him, but where should we look?"

He stroked her face, his forehead pressed against her's. "It was a mistake," he told her. "Nothing that you should blame yourself for." Moving down so that he could look her in the eyes, he thought for a moment. "If the Queen came for him, she probably has him locked away in the prison. It's guarded by Tweedledee and Tweedledum."

The sky cleared a little and allowed the rain to stop while Alice wiped her eyes. With the stopping rain, her white outfit suddenly became white again instead of stained with gray ashes. "Oh, dear," she mumbled and began to pace. "Tweedledum and Tweedledee are such trouble. How will we get the White Rabbit free from them?"

He shrugged. "I do not know," he admitted. "I have never even been to the prison. The twins have gotten rather violent and cruel in the time you have been gone. They're almost more trouble than they're worth."

Alice still paced but stopped when something hit her foot. She reached down and pushed through some ashes. Slowly, she picked up a butcher knife. "Then I shall get the White Rabbit back by force..." she said darkly.

The Hatter eyed the knife and nodded. "If that is what you think is best," he told her. His appearance seemed to shift, slowly. There were minor changes. His dark purple outfit seemed to get darker, almost black. His eyes narrowed, and his earrings now had little spikes on them. "Then we will do it by force."

She nodded. With her free hand, she took his and held him tightly. "I am afraid, Mr. Hatter...please don't leave me."

He smirked. His hand tightened on hers. His nails now painted black. "I will never leave you," he said. "I am yours." He kissed her hand, his eyes staring into hers as he started to pull her along.

Alice's heart started pound against her chest as they entered the dark forest that Tweedledum and Tweedledee lived. She hated this forest. Even before when Wonderland was bright and pretty it was a dark, hollow place. Now, with Wonderland the way it was, the forest seemed to be so much worse. Red eyes glared at her as she pressed close to the Hatter. The ground disappeared as she walked. When she looked behind her, she saw nothing but blackness so there was only one way to go, forward. Swallowing hard, she tried to calm herself as the evil sounds came from all angles. Dark laughs and cold chills sent her shivers.

"I do not remember this place being so...scary..." she whispered.

The Hatter shrugged at this. "That is because it was not always this way," he told her softly. "It use to be beautiful, like many things in our world it has simply been consumed by the madness."

"I'm afraid I will have to kill the Red Queen as well..." she said sadly. "I cannot let the madness continue. Not to my Wonderland." She stepped on something and it snapped at her. Screaming, she jumped into the Mad Hatter's arms. She didn't feel brave at all.

The Hatter chuckled as she threw herself into his arms. "Perhaps we should take a rest," he told her, stroking her thigh as he held her.

"Here? In the forest?" she said in a shaky voice. "But it's scary..."

"I'm with you, aren't I?"

She held tightly to him. "I suppose...just don't leave me, ok?"
