"I know only what I believe, same as you. You believe me to be mad. You say that I am, even though clearly I am not. In that sense we both have our faults."

Right now, Alice hated him. Once more, she scooted away from him, her body practically hugging the wall as she squished her rabbit between her and the wall. "It's not that hard to see madness when you were born to be mad."

"No one is born to be mad," he told her.

"There you go again. Assuming you understand. Just go to sleep. You are rather annoying," she said rolling her eyes. Finally she closed them again.

"Whatever." Rolling over on his side, he told himself to push her from his mind so that he could actually fall asleep.

Of course, Alice didn't sleep. She laid there all night, not moving or making a sound until the sun washed into the room. She sat up with the first signs of the sun. She had to crawl over him to get to the floor. Looking at him sleeping, she grabbed one of his many shirts and put it on, buttoning only a few buttons. She took one last look at him before holding her rabbit tightly against her and walking out. She started back to her room.

"Ah, there you are, Alice," the Director said with a smile. "The nurse informed me that you had been moved to another room. What are you doing roaming these halls by yourself?"

Alice looked at him. "Good morning, Mr. Caterpillar. Afraid that I would miss my nightly dose of your special drugs?" she smirked. "I know your secret."

The Director looked at her, his face slightly confused. "Alice, you shouldn't be wandering the halls. Where is your gown? Who's shirt is that?"

"You see, Mr. Caterpillar. I put the pieces together last night since I didn't sleep." She pushed her hair from her face so she could eye him down. "Mr. Cat and Mr. Hatter are the only people authorized to go into my room. But someone drugged me yesterday. Someone that would have access to both my room and drugs. While I was out, that same person moved my body and cleaned to food."

She took a few steps to him. "Why would someone want me knocked out? I asked myself the same thing, but then I remember the first time I meet you. Something I had long forgotten about because my memory seemed to escape me. When we first met, I was with my aunt and she asked you to keep me here by any means possible. I was only eleven and it was my first day. I was so far from reality that you and her spoke freely around me because you both thought I wouldn't remember. How clever. All this time I thought my delusions were something of my fault but really you have been sneaking in my room and drugging me."

She smirked. "But you forgot one key factor...after the body has taken a drug for so long, they become immune to the affects. My body adjusted to it after six years and now I finally get a chance to think clearly. The pieces all fit together. My aunt never wanted me to leave so she had you drug me every night to ensure I would never get the chance to get well. That's a crime, Mr. Caterpillar. People go to jail for that."

"Such a vivid imagination you have," he told her. "Come now, child. Do not make me use force to get you back into your room."

"If you touch me, you will regret it," she warned. "Just know that I know your secret and I will make sure that I don't fall for your little tricks anymore. I like thinking clearly. And I don't like being fucked with!" Her eyes narrowed.

"You are a patient at my mental institution. You have no choice but to take the drugs that I prescribe."

"I promise you I will make your visits and everyone else who tries to drug me a living nightmare," she spat. "Stay away from me."

"As if you truly have any say in the matter," he chuckled. "Take this patient to one of the padded rooms. Give her a jacket. I believe she's becoming belligerent." Two new orderlies came and grabbed her by her arms as they started to haul her to the padded rooms.

"Let go of me!" Alice screamed and kicked. She pulled at them and scratched at them. She wasn't going without a fight. "You tell my aunt I hate her! You tell her that I will tell the whole world that she kept me here drugged up! You tell her when I get out, I'm going to ruin her!" she screamed as she fought against them. "Let me go! Let me go!"

"I'm afraid they can't do that," the Director said. Taking out a needle, he stabbed it into her neck. Pulling it back out he nodded for them to take her away. "Next time I will simply have to use a larger dose."

Her body stiffened. "You won't...get away...with this..." she mumbled as she started to slip from consciousness.

"Please. I've been getting away with it for six years. You belong to me, Alice. You're mine to do with as I please."

She didn't get a chance to say anymore before her eyes closed and she went limp.

The orderlies put her into a straight jacket and placed her in the padded cell with her rabbit. It would be an hour before she would awake, so they wouldn't have to worry about her. Shutting the door, it locked automatically once it was shut. From there the orderlies went about their business.

Matthew groaned as he woke up. He felt like he had a hangover for some reason. Yawning, he grabbed his glasses. The first thing he noticed was that Alice was gone. "Great..." He would worry about her after a shower and something to eat. No one had come to him telling him that she was causing trouble. He would find her soon enough.

Alice woke in Wonderland but didn't move. She laid there on the grass staring up at the sky while tears streamed down her face. She wasn't free in any world. Wonderland was just as mad as the real world. What happened to finding an escape?

"There is no place for tears in Wonderland," the Hatter said as he looked down at her.

"It seems all I do these days is cry," she whispered.

"And why is that? You use to never cry."

"That was before everything went wrong and I lost myself..."

"And how exactly did you lose yourself?" He bent over so that he could look down at her more clearly.

"Stop asking so many question, Mr. Hatter. I'm not in the mood."

"The only reason I'm asking them is because you want them to be asked," he told her. "Because generally when you lose something you have to find it. Therefore losing yourself is no problem as long as you find you before you forget you."

"Stop speaking in riddles! I don't want Wonderland to be like this! I want to be able to come here and be happy! So lay down next to me and be happy!" she yelled.

He looked at her, slowly he complied with he request. Laying beside her, he stared up at the darkened sky.

"It's not the same is it?" she whispered. "Not with Wonderland in such a state...."

"No, it's not, but it's getting better," he told her. "You're making it better, in more way then you know."

"I hope so." She reached over and took his hand. "I must tell you about something, Mr. Hatter..."

He looked down at her hand and then to her. His mad smile gracing his porcelain like face. "Yes? What is it?"

She didn't look at him, instead she stared at the sky. "In the other world...the one I'm from...my heart aches for another."

"Oh really? And who is this other person?"

She turned to him. "He's the Mad Hatter of that world."

He smiled at this. "Well, it is hard to resist the charms of a Hatter. It is our gift, it is our curse," he chuckled.

She shook her head at him. "I don't understand. You're not upset?"

"Why should I be upset? I told you before that while the Hatter belongs to Alice, Alice does not belong to the Hatter. I always knew one day you would grow too old for the likes of me."

She moved to him and hugged him closely. "Don't say such things. My heart will always belong to you."

He smiled and pulled her on top of him. "Yes, your heart might hold on to me, but not forever. Eventually I will be nothing but a faint memory."

"Please, don't say such things...you are breaking my heart," she whispered against him as tears soaked his jacket.

"Then promise me that you will always be mine, Alice. Mine and mine alone."

Matthew peeked into her room, surprised to find that she wasn't there. He stopped one of the nurses who explained to him that she'd been put in a padded room. Shaking his head, he wondered what she had done now. Going to the secure area, he searched until he found the room. After unlocking it, he propped the door open so that it wouldn't shut behind him. "Alice, c'mon and wake up."

The Hatter's smile became sad as the world around them began to fade. "Perhaps you can give me your answer next time...."

"Mr. Hatter?" Alice called and held him tighter. "Please...don't leave yet...."

She jolted up, landing in Matthew's arms when she woke. Her head was killing her and her body ached, most likely from the roughness from earlier. She would carry bruising from it. She looked at Matthew with tears and yet she couldn't hold him with the straight jacket around her.

"Easy, it's just me," he said. "What did you do to get yourself thrown in here?" He pulled her to him so that he could work on getting her jacket undone.
"Think hard," she whispered to him. Even though they were alone, her guard was up. "You know who did this." She moved her lips to his ear. "He's everywhere and my aunt is working with him. He controls my delusions," she whispered.

He frowned, his hands undoing just one of the many belts which restrained her. "Is that why you're crying?"

"Mostly," she said. She looked him in the eyes. "I'm not safe, Mr. Hatter. I'm not safe here. He comes when I'm sleeping and drugs me. You are my only hope."

"What do you want me to do?" he asked, swallowing hard as he stared into her eyes.

"If you can't stop the drugs, then you can't do anything for me. But I'm warning you...even in my state of delusion, I will make my stay here hell for everyone. I won't stand by and be a doll quietly," she whispered. "You are the only person that can make sure they stop. No one will believe me...you need proof." She bit her lip. "I'll do anything if you help me. I'll say whatever you want me to. I'll never kiss you again and I'll even call you by your real name. Just please...help me." The tears thickened. "I have no one else."

The last strap of the jacket came off and nodded. "I will talk to him," he told her. "I will see what I can do for you. I will not let him give you anything without my authorization."

She pulled the jacket off her and hugged him. "I'm...scared...I don't want to be controlled."

He wrapped an arm around her. "Don't worry. You won't be controlled," he assured her.

She pulled back from him. "Starting now, I'll do whatever you say...Dr. Hatsfield..."

He was surprised when he heard her say that. "I didn't realize my name sounded so stiff and boring..."

"Well, it's what everyone else calls you and I promise for now on, we will only have a patient and doctor relationship."

"We...I mean...call me what you want to, Alice," he told her. "I preferred you how you were." He shook his head slowly. What was he saying? "I mean...that's good, Alice."

She tilted her head at him. "You're confusing me. Do you want the patient and doctor relationship or do you want...more?"

"I just want-" He stopped as he heard something move. Turning back, he watched at the door began to close. "Fuck!" He let go of her and moved toward it, but before he could stop it, the door closed firmly in place.

Alice looked at the door and sighed. "Now you know what it's like to be locked in a room. At least you have company," she said. "Now what were you saying before?"

He rolled his eyes as he searched his pockets. "Hold on. Let me see if I can't call the main office." Another curse left his lips as he realized he didn't even have his phone on him.

"Stop avoiding the question. Just relax. When I'm in here they eventually come and bring me something for dinner...but that's for hours. I don't get breakfast or lunch when I'm in here so the best thing to do is relax until then."

He leaned his head back and tried to get comfortable. "Somehow I imagined this place to be more...cushion-y."

She leaned back against one of the walls. "Sucks to be treated like you’re crazy, huh?"

"I didn't say that it sucks, nor am I being treated like I'm crazy. I'm simply locked in a padded room by accident. There is no correlation between the two."

She laid down. "Well get comfortable. We are stuck here for the rest of the day."

"Joy," he muttered. He was accustomed to being constantly busy. Not moving was, well driving him crazy. He tossed and turned, trying to get comfortable, but he couldn't find anything to relax him. Finally he stood and pushed on the door, but of course that was to no avail.

She watched him move about. "Would you stop moving so much? You're driving me nuts."

He looked back at her. "Yes, well this place is driving me mad," he told her. "I should be out there with patients. I'm not accustomed to staying still for so long."

"I was eleven when I came here. Do you think I was accustomed to being still?" she said and sat up. "You have to learn to make the most of the quiet." She patted the spot in front of her. "You still haven't answered my question from before."

He looked back at her. A sigh escaped his lips as he sat down, still fidgeting slightly. "And just what was that question?" He'd already forgotten.

"What kind of relationship you want with me," she said.
