Matthew stopped as he heard this. "Okay, first off...why did you go stab happy on your Aunt. Secondly, by made love you mean you...."
"It wasn't my aunt, it just looked like her. The Caterpillar turned into a butterfly and took on a form he knew I wouldn't take kindly to. He said things he shouldn't have said...I started screaming and the next thing I know I was stabbing him over and over. The Hatter had to stop me," she explained. She smiled widely. "I mean we had sex, the Hatter and I. He wanted to make sure I knew that not all physical experiences are bad. It was perfect. He was perfect. I will never forget it."
"Oh...well, that's...good." He took a deep breath and stood as he started to pick up the left over stuff from fixing her arm.
"He said something disturbing though... We were talking about how I wanted to stay in Wonderland, but he said that I didn't belong there. I asked him why and he said that he belongs to me, but I don't belong to him. Of course, I found this rather stupid so I asked him who would make such a rule." She looked at him, the blanket falling to her waist. "He said that I made the rule. It makes little sense. I would never make a rule that kept me from Wonderland...from him..." She shook her head. "I don't know. Even with a clear mind I'm so mixed up. My emotions play tricks on me and my heart alters things. But...in all the madness, I succeeded in clearing my mind from the fuzziness. Now I can move on."
He looked back, his breath catching in his throat as the blanket fell. "What do you mean that you cleared your mind of the fuzziness? We both know that your attention span is fleeting."
"Ha ha," she spat at him not liking his joke. "I mean that I purged myself of the delusions. You know, like when I use to think of you as the Mad Hatter...though you are a Mad Hatter, you are not a Wonderland Hatter."
He looked at her curiously. "So you are able to tell the difference between this world and yours," he said. "And yet you still think I'm a Mad Hatter?"
She smiled. "There is nothing wrong with being mad, Mr. Hatter. It's what you do with that madness that counts." Yes, she could tell that Wonderland was different than this world, but Wonderland was just as real to her as the real world. She felt pain and love there and she knew that somehow, Wonderland had a connection to her in this world, which is why she knew she would have no more delusions.
He shook his head at that. "Madness is pure and simple," he told her. He rubbed his temples. Sitting back down in the chair, he took off his glasses and sighed. "Things would be easier if I was mad."
"But you are," she smirked. Her hands reached over and began rubbing his temples for him. "It's ok. You can stay delusional," she teased. "Why did you come here, Mr. Hatter? This is your second trip here tonight."
He closed his eyes, relaxing in her hands. Upon opening them, he smirked. "Simple. I enjoy the view."
She smiled at that. Though her heart belonged to the Hatter in Wonderland, she couldn't deny her feelings for Matthew in this world. "Mr. Hatter, you can get in a lot of trouble for saying such things." She had a thing for Mad Hatters. "Mr. Cat will be here soon. He comes to get my tray before I go to bed. Hopefully he'll bring clean sheets and a clean gown for me. The floor is a mess...I feel bad that he has to clean it."
"He'll be fine. He likes to clean and other girly stuff." He leaned into her hands, enjoying the feeling. Closing his eyes once more, he found himself relaxing.
Alice moved her hands from him and covered herself as the door opened. She looked at Mr. Cat. "I'm sorry about the mess...I need clean sheets and another gown..."
Mr. Cat sighed. "We'll have to put you in another room," he said. "I'm too tired to clean all of this up. Doctor, why don't you take her to another room?"
Matthew rolled his eyes but nodded. "Yeah, I guess you're right." Yawning, he stood and nodded. Handing her his coat he started for the door. "I'll grab you a gown on the way."
She put the coat on, leaving the buttons open. "Do you expect me to walk through the glass for kicks?"
Matthew groaned and held out his arms. "Fine. Come here."
Alice smiled and stood on her bed. She jumped into his arms. "Why, Mr. Hatter, how strong you are," she teased.
He rolled his eyes as he cupped her against him and started for the door. "Whatever. Once we get out to the hall you're walking on your own," he said with a small smirk. "You have really smooth skin...."
She wrapped her arms around his neck and laid her head against him. "You know...there are no extra rooms...Mr. Cat set you up."
He stiffened as she did this. "There has to be an extra room. Otherwise you have no where else to sleep...."
"There is a bed in your room," she said as her rabbit dangled in her hand.
"Yes, but you are not staying in my room."
She sighed against him. Her body moved closer to his as he carried her. "Then where will I sleep?"
"I am still trying to figure that out," he muttered as he started down the hallway with her. He knew there had to be a vacant room. It was just a matter of finding it.
She yawned. "While you do that, I'm going to sleep," she mumbled.
He rolled his eyes at this. "Very well then. There's no glass. You can walk."
She clung to him. "No! You're my doctor so you have to take care of me and I'm too tired to walk," she said against him. "Better find a room soon."
He groaned as she clung against him. Really? Getting her down was going to be impossible with how tightly she was clinging to him. "Fine, I'll just let you spend the night in one of the padded cells. They look comfortable."
She shrugged. "I did that once before. Just make sure it's clean and I have enough blankets. It gets cold in there sometimes."
"Right." He took her down through a series of hallways until he finally reached the padded rooms. "I can't exactly unlock the door with you like this...."
Groaning, Alice let him go and stood on her feet she looked in the window of the room. "Someone's in there," she said and walked to the next one. She peeked in that window then went to the next one while holding her rabbit. She peeked in each window. "There is someone in all of them."
"There can't be people in there. This section hasn't been used in weeks." Looking through the glass, he frowned. What the hell were they doing in there? He didn't authorize this. Did one of the other doctor's here try something? "Whatever. I'll deal with this later.... We still need to get you a room."
Again she yawned and nodded. Walking over to him she smiled. "I'm going to be walking these halls all night aren't I? Why can't I just sleep with you? Are you scared you might like it too much?"
He looked down at her, his glasses slowly falling but he quickly fixed them. "No," he told her. He was fairly certain that he might enjoy it, but that was neither here nor there. "I am simply afraid as to what anyone would say if they realized that I had a patient sleep in my room. Especially after what happened with the orderlies."
"Who would find out? You're always around me anyways. They wouldn't bat and eye."
"That is not the point. The point is that-" Looking at her, he muttered something beneath his breath. "Fine. I'll let you sleep in my room."
She took his hand and smiled. "I promise I won't rape you in your sleep," she whispered as they started to his room.
"You're lying," he sighed. Taking out his keys, he unlocked the door and motioned to his bed. "There you go."
"Ok, maybe I'm lying just a little," she smirked. Walking over to the bed, she crawled in. It was a much bigger bed than hers. There was plenty of room. She looked over at him as she pushed her rabbit aside. "It's awfully lonely over here, Mr. Hatter." She sat up on her knees and took off his doctor coat. Holding it out she smiled. "Want your coat back?"
He swallowed hard as she took of his coat. "Yes," he said after a moment's pause. Reaching out, he snatched it from her and went about busying himself with putting it up. He then walked over to his desk so that he could work. He wasn't about to be tempted to do...other things.
She sat back against his headboard. When she noticed he was going to work, she laid down and pulled the covers over her. "Goodnight, Mr. Hatter."
"Goodnight, Alice. Sweet dreams," he said, looking back once she had covered herself and laid down.
After a few moments Alice sat up. "Can I have another one of those numbing shots?" she asked. "It's been wearing off for hours and...it's hard to sleep with the pain..."
"How badly does it hurt?" he asked, turning around in his chair to look at her.
"Not too bad. It feels better than went I woke this morning, but it still hurts."
"Okay, hold on." Taking his key, he unlocked the medicine cabinet. Taking out a syringe he filled it with the numbing liquid. Walking over to her, he sat beside her on the bed and pushed the needle into her, delivering the numbing sensation as she requested.
It didn't take long before the drug took hold of her and the pain slowly disappeared. She looked at him with heavy eyes. "Thank you," she said softly.
He nodded, putting the cap back on the syringe he tossed it in the nearby trash. "You're welcome."
She looked at the clock. It was after twelve. Turning back to him, she smiled. "Happy un-birthday," she whispered. Leaning over, she pressed her lips lightly to his before pulling back.
He felt every inch of him stiffen as she kissed him. "Yes, happy un-birthday," he said. After a moment's pause, he sighed. Standing, he started to unbutton his shirt. He wouldn't get much work done in his mind set right now.
Alice moved back to the far side of the bed so he would have room to sleep. She laid her head down but didn't pull covers over him. As his shirt came off, she let her eyes wander over his chest.
After kicking off his shoes he started with his pants, pausing when he looked over at her and the way her eyes trailed over him. Blood rushed to his face, and he decided to leave his pants on as he crawled into bed.
Alice rolled over, her back facing him now. She pulled the covers over herself. Maybe she shouldn't be so comfortable with the naked body. However, living in an institution doesn't allow you to have privacy. More doctors and nurses had seen her naked than she could count and she grew up in that kind of environment. It was hard not to stare when someone else was the one undressing and not herself.
"Goodnight, Alice," he said once more. Taking off his glasses he set them on the nightstand. Rubbing his eyes, he pulled the covers over him as he tried to get comfortable.
She said nothing. Pulling her rabbit to her, she closed her eyes. This was not as fun as she wanted it to be. It was strange how they could go from making out earlier in the day to being in the same bed and now completely distant from one another. Her mind drifted back to the Mad Hatter and how he made love to her. It was something she was never going to forget and yet...laying next to Matthew...all she really wanted was her doctor. A part of her felt like she was betraying her loving Hatter. After all, he loved her before anyone did and he never once pushed her way or hurt her.
Matthew rolled over so that he was facing her back, still trying to get comfortable. His eyes drifted over her bare back. She was teasing him, even if she didn't mean to. He was going to resist no matter what it took. She was a patient, and he was about to let desires of the flesh destroy him. He would have to be...well, mad for something like that to even become a possibility.
With her memories back, Alice tried to focus on the faces of her parents and her most treasured moments with them. It was such a long time ago and she felt so distant from that time. Everything had changed so much and she didn't understand how she ended up spending six years of her life in an insane asylum. She didn't feel crazy. After all, crazy people didn't feel what she felt for Matthew.
"For someone who was so tired they couldn't walk, you're not doing much sleeping," he muttered with his eyes closed.
"Maybe if you stop talking to me I could sleep better," she countered. How did he know she wasn't asleep? She hadn't made a sound.
"Sure. Whatever you say." He hugged his pillow tighter. If she wished to play that game so be it.
She sighed and her eyes opened. Things were so much simpler in Wonderland.
"What are you thinking about?" She sighed. There must be something on her mind that was keeping her awake.
She thought about rolling over but instead smiled to herself. "I'm crazy. Crazy people have trouble sleeping."
"Yes, well you've rarely had trouble falling asleep before," he muttered, knowing what she was doing.
"Whatever," she mumbled. She hugged her rabbit tighter and closed her eyes again. Maybe she would have pleasant dreams this time.
Matthew hesitated as he reached out to her. His fingers dancing along her shoulder. "Try to sleep."
Reaching over she shoved his fingers from her. "If you don't want to be tempted, you should do the tempting," she said and scooted a little further from him.
He frowned. So much for trying to be nice. "I don't recall ever mentioning being tempted."
"You can be read like a book, Mr. Hatter," she said. "Your eyes tell more of yourself than you want them too."
"Then I just need darker glasses," he muttered, surprised by his own voice. He sounded like he was pouting.
Her eyes opened. "Maybe you should have thought of that before you kissed me back."
He cleared his throat at this. "Yes, perhaps I should have."
She felt out of place now. She wished the nurse would have cleaned her room so she could have slept there instead.
"Tell me, why did you kiss me? Why is it that you feel comfortable around me as you do." She never did answer that question.
Alice looked down at her rabbit. "You remind me a lot of my Mad Hatter...and yet at times you are so different. You don't understand me at all, but you try to, though you try too hard. Out of all the doctor's I've had since I've been here, you are the only one who hasn't given up on me." Matthew had been her doctor for three years. Before him she had four other doctors. Matthew was the only one that had lasted so long. "I don't have anyone...I just have you and Mr. Cat here. It's very easy for me to feel the way I do when I only speak to two people."
"It's a variation of Stockholm syndrome," he told her softly. "I...really doubt that anything you feel is truly real. As you said, it is easy simply because you deal with only a handful of people."
"Screw you, Matthew!" she snapped. She had never called him by his real name before. "You don't know anything! And you certainly don't know enough about me to say that!"
He was taken back, both by the fact that she had used his name and the tone of her voice. "Well, I am correct, aren't I? If given freedom, you would forget about this place and its inhabitants and staff. That is the truth, isn't it?"
"Don't be stupid," she said. She felt like crying for some unknown reason. "I wouldn't have anywhere to go. I don't know anyone to help me learn how to live on my own. I'm safer here...even though I don't like admitting it."
He reached out and stroked her arm. "You're well taken care of here," he told her. "Because the staff enjoys taking care of you."
"Which is exactly why no matter what I do...I'll never be free. Don't sit there and call me something from your text books just because I was classified criminally insane. I'm still human, and my emotions are real." Again, she pushed his hand from her. "And you don't know me."
"It wasn't my aunt, it just looked like her. The Caterpillar turned into a butterfly and took on a form he knew I wouldn't take kindly to.
