"Go after her!" Matthew yelled as he tried to stand up.

Sammy wasted no time going after her. "Alice, come on. We'll go home."

Alice turned to him. She was pacing. When she saw him she threw her arms around him. "Sammy...I don't know where I am...." she whispered. "I just remember talking to Matthew then suddenly I was standing here..."

Sammy relaxed as he hugged her. "You lost yourself again," he told her.

She started crying on his shoulder. "Please tell me I didn't do anything bad..."

"No," he assured her softly. "Nothing too bad at least."

She looked around as she held him. People were staring. "Can we go home?" she whispered.

"You might want to talk to Matthew before we do," he suggested.

She buried her face in his neck. She knew that she had done something to him. "Did...did I hurt him again?"

"Not like before, no." He slowly started to pull her back toward Matthew's office.Matthew limped to his desk, holding his leg and cursing. He was trying to fix his books when he heard the door open behind him.

Alice looked at the books everywhere. Did she do that? She started picking some of them up and tried to hold back fresh tears, but the look on Matthew's face was killing her.

"Are you calm now?" He kept his eyes trained on her as she started to pick up the books.

She looked away from him as she picked up the books on her knees. "Yes," she whispered. "Did I ruin your books?"

"Most of them," he told her. "As well as threatened several students." He put his books back up on the desk and looked at her. "Any idea what set you off this time?"

She stood up and put the books on his desk. "I'll find a way to pay for them," she promised. "And not really....last thing I remember was talking to you about Sammy not having a job."

"And then you started yelling at some girls nearby," he sighed. Leaning against his desk, he rubbed his leg. "Don't worry about the books. I'll take care of this."

She shifted uncomfortably. "I'm sorry."

"It's okay, Alice. I can't blame you for something that you didn't have any control of." Looking at her, he held open his arms, seeing if she would hug him.

She took a step back. "Sammy and I...we are leaving...."

His arms fell. "Oh...."

"We don't have to leave if you don't want to," Sammy said slowly.

Alice turned her back to Matthew and started out. "It's for the best."

"What is?"

"Me leaving."

"Well, are we still on for dinner this weekend?"

She froze. "Maybe...maybe we shouldn't see each other for a while..."

"Alice, I've been trying really hard to get over...everything," he said softly. "Sammy has offered for me to stay at his place till I get an apartment. Will you be okay with that?"

Alice's head snapped to Sammy. "But...you don't have anymore guest rooms..."

"I had hoped that you two would stay in the same room," he told her. "However, there is always my couch, or he could share my room...and bed."

"No! I told you he's mine ok!?" she snapped. She blushed then looked away. "I mean....whatever...I'm going to the car...." She walked out of the room once more and started to the parking lot.

Sammy pointed to Alice as she left. "She's jealous," he told Matthew. "Now go fix it."

Matthew groaned. Fixing his glasses, he hobbled after her. "Alice, wait! I want to talk to you."

"It's not my house. You can stay if you want and you can have my room. I'll sleep on the couch. I don't mind, ok?" she said without stopping.

"Alice, those girls that I teach don't mean anything to me."

"I don't know what you're talking about," she said shaking her head. She got to the car and pulled the knob. It was lock. She sighed. "Great."

"Yes, you do, Alice. The reason you lost yourself was because you got jealous of those other girls."

She turned to him. "Would you just shut up about girls ok!?" she snapped. "There are a million other things to talk about then girls."

He smirked. "Would you rather talk about boys?" He reached out and placed his hands on her shoulders. "My point is, Alice, you don't have to worry about them or anyone else replacing you."

She pushed his hand from her. "I'm not stupid. I know....I know you look....I mean...why be with someone who scares you when you can be with someone who is normal. You don't have any ties to me. You don't love me and you haven't promised yourself to me so there is no reason for me to believe that you aren't looking at someone else."

He sighed, taking off his glasses, he put them in his breast pocket and rubbed his eyes. "As hard as this may be to believe, but I do not look, Alice. Yes, the girls here are pretty, but they don't hold a candle to you; and kids today...well, to put it rather bluntly they're as crazy as the patients that are still locked up in the asylum. I had a girl in my class that had parts of her body pierced that should never be pierced! One kid had metal spikes coming out of his head. That is not normal!"

She crossed her arms. "You are not very convincing and I am not amused."

"I am not trying to convince you of anything," he told her. "I am simply telling you the truth, Alice. If I was looking for other girls or guys why on earth would I have been so excited to see you?"

She leaned back against the car. "You didn't look excited...you haven't called or come by since that last night we saw each other. I haven't heard a word from you and when I finally get to see you you tell me you got sixteen numbers for the young girls in your class! What am I to you? I want to know now! Where do I stand?"

"First off, I thought it would do us both some good to simply have time to adjust to everything. Secondly, I didn't tell you about the numbers. Sammy asked...." Shaking his head, he slumped against the car. "I've already told you that I care about you Alice. You're my...girlfriend. At least I thought you were."

"I want to be more than that...I want to be the only one you think about....the only one you dream about. The only one forever."

"You want to be my...beloved. My...wife?"

Alice looked over at him. "I don't know...but I do want you to promise yourself to me...forever."

Matthew took a deep breath as he looked over at her. "Are you asking me or telling me?" He was still slightly worried that the wrong word my cause Dr. Alice to spring to life and slit his throat.

She looked down. "I don't want to be with you anymore if I can't have you forever."

"And if I offer you forever?"

She looked at him. "What do you want?"

"If I offered you forever, then I would want you forever," he said after a moment of contemplation. His eyes met hers, though it was hard to see without the aid of his glasses.

"You mean...if I bring the Hatter back...I can't be with him?"

"No, you cannot. If I cannot have another, neither can you."

Alice was quiet for a long time. She looked away. "I can't promise you that then..."

"So I am suppose to promise myself solely to you, yet you cannot do the same for me?" That was hypocritical at best. Even if the Hatter was simply a fabrication of her own delusions and of her own fractured psyche, he wanted to see if she would choose him over this phantom.

She looked at the ground. "The Hatter has always been there for me...he would kill for him...he died for me. Every time I feel like I'm falling apart, he was always there to make things better. If I find a way to bring him back...I will not true my love for him away," she said softly. "It would be like turning my love for you away..."

"And what if I should meet someone else that I love?" He asked curiously. "Would you make me turn them away?"

She shook her head. "No...I would ask you to turn from me."

"And why would you do that?"

"I know it doesn't seem fair that I wish to love two people and wish that you to only care for me...but if I saw you with someone else while we are together..." she looked over at him, "I can not promise you her safety."

"Tell me, Alice. Why would you want to...kill, someone that I was with?" He thought that he knew the answer, but he wanted to hear it from her.

She dug her nails into her jeans, the fabric bent to her will. "I don't want to talk about this anymore...I don't want to do anything I will later regret and not remember."

"Please, Alice," he whispered, his hand coming up to caress her face. "Tell me."

She let her eyes move to meet his. With his hand on her face, she was hopelessly powerless to deny him. "Because...I feel like you belong to me."

His thumb ran across her cheek. Leaning forward, he pressed his lips to hers, tasting her flesh sweetly. Alice's eyes widened. She didn't think he would kiss her, but she didn't object to him, she couldn't. Her arms moved to his hips and she pulled him closer as she closed her eyes.

His tongue swirled around in her mouth, his eyes closing as he was pulled toward her. Just as quickly as he kissed her he found himself pulling away. Leaning his forehead against her's, he took a deep breath. "Would you object to me staying the night?"

She shook her head. "Never..." she whispered. Her hands moved her fingers into the loops of his belt holes on his jeans. Her eyes stayed closed as his forehead rested against hers.

"I'm glad," he whispered breathlessly. His lips curved into a smile. "Because I really didn't have any place to go."

She moved her head to his shoulder, her lips brushing his throat. "Please...try not to wear anything skimpy..." she said against his neck. "I don't think I'll be able to share a room with you if you do."

He shuddered as she spoke. "What would happen if I did?"

"I will rape you," she joked. "Seriously...we are going to have to make some rules."

"Why rules?" He asked as he pulled back from her.

She sighed when he pulled back. Pushing some curls from her face, she looked at him. "So I don't make you uncomfortable and so you don't make me...uncomfortable... Last time we were together...I was left very uncomfortable."

"Uncomfortable? How? I didn't...I mean, I didn't intend for that. I just didn't want to...well, I didn't want to freak out in the middle of anything."

She pulled from him. "It's not me we should worry about. It's you. From this point on, we need to make sure you are...well...safe."

He smirked at that, caressing her face to ease her fears. "I'll be fine so long as we keep the strait jackets and knives away from the bedroom."

She didn't feel assured. "It's just better if we set rules. Like not being naked in front of each other and keeping the bathroom door locked with taking showers."

"I would...like to try," he said slowly.

Alice looked at the school again and saw Sammy coming. "Try what? The rules? Of course."

"No, I mean, try us...again...in bed." He looked at Sammy who waved his keys as he drew near.

Alice shifted. "I...don't know..." she said.

"If we want to be together we have to try at some point."

Her heart sped up. "If we do...then I want you to tell me to stop at any moment you are uncomfortable."

He chuckled at that. "Normally that's the guy's line," he told her. "But I will tell you if I start to feel uncomfortable. I'd rather not freak out in the middle of something important, but promise me that you'll warn me if you start getting...angry."

She nodded. "I'll do my best."
