"You can go through the nine months. Carry the child, and be a mother. You can go through the nine months and give the child to an orphanage." Matthew paused and looked up at her. "Or you can get an abortion."

"What's an abortion?"

"It's a medical procedure where they destroy the fetus growing inside you."

"They murder the baby inside of me?" she asked with narrow eyes. That was a little...insane.

He nodded slowly. "More or less."

She looked up at the ceiling. "Am I the only one that has to decide?" Why did she always have to make these large decisions?

Taking a deep breath, he shook his head. "Not entirely. It's just that whatever your decision is, it will affect you a lot more than anyone else. After all, for as much as I can do for you, I can't carry the child for you."

"I don't want to decide," she said honestly. "But I don't want to kill it."

He sighed and nodded slowly. "So no abortion," he whispered. Looking up at her, he stroked her stomach. "If that's what you want. You know that the nine months are going to be hell, right?"

Alice nodded. A part of her wanted to ask if they could just take it out of her and put it into someone else's stomach that wanted a baby. Nine months was a long time for her. "Do you...do you want this baby?"

"Honestly, no," he admitted. "You're an escaped mental patient. We can't go to a hospital with you pregnant, and there is very little I'll be able to do to help. So no, I really don't think I want a kid right now."

She turned her back to him. Maybe an abortion was her only option. "Then I'll get the abortion."

"I don't want you to take part in this if you don't want it," he whispered. He reached out and stroked her cheek. "If you don't want to take its life, then that is fine."

She pulled from his touch. "I said I'll get the abortion ok? Just leave it at that so I don't change my mind again."

"Okay. If that's what you want," he said after a moment. Stroking her thigh he kissed her cheek. "How do you feel?"

Again she pulled from him. "I want to be left alone."

"If that's what you want," he whispered, getting up and walking to the door. "Alice, I do love you."

She only nodded. As soon as he shut the door, she started to cry.

Matthew didn't know what to do. He'd just told her to kill her child. Their child. He didn't want a kid, not at all. He didn't know the first thing about them. Going to the kitchen, he grabbed the closest bottle of wine and poured himself a glass.

After a long moment, Alice stood and locked the door. She pushed a dresser in front of it to keep people out the got dressed. She didn't bother with a wig this time, she just put all of her hair into a hat. Taking a look at the door, she opened the widow. She looked down. Reaching out, she took hold of a tree limb and used it to help her climb to the tree. After taking a minute to breathe, she started to climb down it to the ground. Normally she would look to Wonderland to escape a situation like this, but there was no Wonderland...there was only running. Though she didn't know why she was running or where she would go, but she didn't want to stay in that room or in that house, waiting for her to murder a baby.

Sammy and Brian had the decency to stay away while Matthew downed the wine. He still felt numb to all of this. Shaking his head, he pulled at his glasses and set them down. Alice was too childish to be able to take care of a child; and he was going to have a hard time taking care of them both. He had to think of something to do so that he could keep Alice from having the guilt of killing her child.

Alice left Sammy's house and started walking. She didn't go out much, but she really didn't care if she got lost. Who would really notice? Who would really care? Matthew wanted her to kill the baby, it was like telling her to kill herself. It would be different if it wasn't her baby or maybe if it was because her life was at risk. But that wasn't the case. Matthew just didn't want her having it, and he was willing to take it's life to see that through.

"What did you two talk about?" Sammy said after the silence became deafening.

"I talked her into having an abortion," he told him.

"What!?"

Matthew winced at Sammy's loud yell. "You know as well as I that she would have a difficult time taking care of a child. There are just too many risks involved with her having a child right now."

Alice stopped when she smelled something delicious. Following her nose, she found a booth selling burgers. Reaching in her pocket she pulled out a few dollars. "What can this buy me?" she asked the man.

He smiled. "Here," he said and handed her a burger and some chips. "Someone as pretty as you shouldn't be on the streets so late all alone."

Alice offered him the money and he shook his head. "I'm not alone, not really..."

Matthew went upstairs and knocked on Alice's door. "Alice, may I come in?" When there was no response, he sighed and pushed at the door. His eyes narrowed when he realized it was locked. Sliding his card through it, he pushed it open, but it was blocked. "Alice? Alice, where are you?"

Alice sat on a bench not far from the booth and silently ate what she was given. The man watched her as if making sure she liked it. Usually she would feel uncomfortable with someone burning their eyes into her, but being in an asylum teaches you that being stared at isn't an option. Her hand went to her stomach as the food slid down her throat. She had never been so hungry before. The cold nipped at her, freezing her fingers and face, but she didn't care.

Matthew didn't bother telling Sammy where he was going. He didn't even know where she was, but he had a fairly good guess. He traveled outward, wishing he had brought a bigger coat with him. Pulling it close against him, he kept searching through the sparse crowds of people, trying to see if he could spot Alice. It was getting darker every minute.

By the time he found her, even he was shivering from the cold. "Alice!" he exclaimed, his voice full of relief. "Don't scare me like that!"

Alice blinked at him, shocked that he found her. "You promised not to yell," she said and took another bite, by now, it was cold.

He sighed, holding his head as he drew closer. He held out his arms, hoping she would come to him for warmth. "That was about the baby. Not about you running away. You scared me to death."

Of course, she didn't go to him. She stayed on the bench and finished her burger. "I didn't run away. I would have come back...eventually."

"Do you even remember the way back to the house?" His arms fell down to his sides. Walking over to her, he sat down and took off his coat, draping it around her shoulders to keep her warm.

She pushed his coat off her and put it back in his lap. "I would have found my way."

He watched as she moved his coat aside. "Let me guess. You're mad at me."

"If I was mad at you, I would be yelling," she pointed out and threw the wrapper in the garbage. "Give me your wallet."

"Why do you want my wallet?" He asked, not moving.

"Because I need money," she said and shook her hand in front of him. "Wallet."

"Money for what?"

"Food! Now can I have some money or do I have to ask someone else?"

"No, of course not." He sat up, taking out his wallet he handed it to her so that she could go get whatever she wanted.

Alice walked back over to the booth where the man was. She smiled. "Can I have another one? But...can you burn it?" she asked and put some money on the counter.

He smiled. "Sure. You know, my wife loves burnt food when she's pregnant."

Alice watched him cook. "Did she like being pregnant?"

"No," he laughed. Alice's heart fell. "But as soon as she sees our new baby, she instantly regrets nothing. It's all worth it in the end."

Alice smiled again. "So she would do it again?"

He put her burger on the bun and handed it to her. "We are having our fifth one in a few months." Alice smiled bigger.

Matthew watched Alice's interactions with the man. Whatever she was talking about had her smiling. That was good, wasn't it? He relaxed, waiting for her to come back so that they could talk about it.

"What advice would you give someone like me who was pregnant?" Alice asked bravely as she bit into the hamburger.

"Is he the father?" he asked pointing to Matthew. Alice looked over at Matthew then back at the man and nodded. "He doesn't seem too excited."

"He wants me to murder it," Alice said in a soft voice.

The man sighed. "If you don't have the support of the father, it will be very hard to do it on your own."

Alice nodded sadly. "But have women done it alone before? Without a job? Or money?"

Again he sighed. "Are you going to tell me you're homeless too?"

Alice shrugged. "Would it help my cause?"

What was going on? Why was that guy now staring at him? Just what on earth was Alice talking him about. He shifted on the seat, finally moving altogether and getting up, walking over to them so he could find out what they were talking about.

"Here." The man slid a card over to her. "Call that number. If you want to keep the baby but don't have the means to do so, they can help you. My wife works there. They help people like you find jobs and a place to stay while pregnant."

Alice took the card. "What happens if I can't get a job? Or if I can't get my own place?"

He looked sad suddenly. "Are you in a situation where those things aren't possible for you?"

Alice looked at the card. "I'm not what you would call sane..."

"Hey, is everything okay?" Matthew glanced at the card, his eyes narrowing as he read the name and number. Looking over to the man, he smiled brightly as his hand rested on the small of Alice's back. "It is getting late, we should be going home."

Alice put the card in her pocket. "Thank you for the food," she said. He nodded with a smile though it was small and almost nervous like. Alice looked at him once more before walking away with Matthew and eating her hamburger.

Matthew looked back at the cart number. He check to see who it was registered to later. "So, what was all that about?" He asked as they made their way back.

She looked at him. "Nothing really. Just talking."

"About your pregnancy," he said, trying to get her to open up about it.

"Yeah," she said as they walked.

"And why were you trying to talk to some random stranger about something like this?"

"Why does it matter?" she snapped. "I won't see him again anyways."

"No, probably not," he admitted. "But it does matter to me. You wanted me to decide what to do, and when I did you get upset at me. If you don't like it, then talk to me."

She shrugged. "I told you I wasn't mad. Why can't you just leave me alone like I asked?"

"Very well then. While we're out, do you want to go ahead and get an abortion?" He was calm, trying to get her to talk was proving harder than he thought it would be.

She looked at the hamburger in her hand. If she wanted to keep Matthew, she had to kill. Slowly she threw the burger away, her stomach still growled. Reaching in her pocket she pulled out the card the man gave her. What last bit of hope she had, she threw it in the trash. "Yeah."

He took her hand and pulled her off to a different direction. "You know that once you do this there is no going back," he whispered. "Once it is done, it is a done deal."

She nodded. "I figured that out when you said the word 'destroy.'"

Matthew stopped her and moved her against the brick wall of a building. He pinned her arms by her sides as he looked at her. "Alice, tell me, and be honest with me...if you do this...will you hate me later?"

"Yes," she said bluntly. No point in lying when he would find out eventually.

"Why?"

"You're asking me to take our child's life." She thought that was obvious.

The way she said it made it sound worse. He looked down, not quite able to meet her gaze. "So you want to keep it?"

"I don't want to take our child's life."

He swallowed hard. Letting go of her wrists, he nodded. "Okay then. You can carry it. You can carry our child. I'll be with you every step of the way. At that time if you want to keep it or give it away.... Well, we'll see."

Was she suppose to thank him for allowing her to carry the life he helped make? She didn't feel like she should have to. "I lied. I am mad at you right now."

He nodded. "Yes, well, I figured as much."

She moved from him and recognize that she was on the right way to home. They walked in silence. She really didn't want to speak with him and she didn't want him to talk to her either. Finally when they reached home, she took her hat off and threw it in the pill where she took her boots, scarf, and jacket off. Her stomach growled when she smelled someone making food.
