"That's all that I can promise...all that I can give you. It has always been good enough before."
"That was before we created another life," she said softly. "I don't understand how you can't love your own child."
He stiffened. There it was again. "I...." He closed his mouth. What could he say to that? "I do not know."
She shook her head. Opening the door, she grabbed some of his clothes and handed them to him. "You should leave."
"Leave? Leave the room or...." His breathing picked up, as did his heart rate.
"The room at the moment. I need time to think..." she said softly.
He nodded slowly. "Okay," he whispered. Pulling his clothes into his chest, he cast one last look at her before going downstairs to get dressed.
Alice shut the door behind him. Shaking hands turned on the lights and blew out all the candles. What a horrible night. Going to her closet, she pulled out the present once more. It was still wrapped and still had the little tag with Matthew's name on it. How stupid was she to believe she could have the family she killed? A mother...a father...a little Alice... No...it was all dead. She always found a way to kill things off.
Slowly, she walked to the small trash can by the door and threw the present in it. More than anything, she wanted her Hatter.
Matthew opened up the door, stopping when he saw her standing next to the trash can. "I forgot my glasses," he said softly, curious of what she threw in there. Walking over, he looked down into the trash. Leaning down, he pulled out the present and looked at the nametag. "This was...for me?"
She snatched it from him and threw it back in the trash. "No."
Looking at the trash, he picked it back up and began to open it. "Why didn't you give this to me?"
Again Alice pulled it from him. "Because it was a mistake. Now just leave it alone."
"Well I want to see it," he said, holding out his hand.
"You don't get a choice. It's not yours."
Matthew bit his lip, trying really hard not to say what he wanted to. He didn't want another fight. He really didn't, but it was starting to getting harder and harder to do so. "Please, just let me see what you got me," he said, keeping his voice calm and even.
Alice shook her head. "It's not yours."
"And why isn't it mine? It has my name on it. You got it for me; and I want to see what it is."
"Fine," she said coldly. She thrusted it at him then pushed him out the door. "Now leave me alone." She slammed the door and leaned against it while taking deep breaths. She just needed...to think...
He glared at the door, angry with her, but glad that he hadn't opened his mouth. There was very little that he could do. He wanted to tell her that after he was being forced to take a child, an unwanted child, the least he could do was take a present that he did want.
Opening the gift, he stopped when he saw the picture. Shaking his head he carried it downstairs. Of course. She was right. It was something that he wouldn't want. Going down to the downstairs area, he laid down on the couch, staring up at the picture, he caressed the engravings on it. What the hell was he going to do?
If she could, Alice would be climbing in that tree again and walking away. But her balance was off with the extra thirty pounds. She sat at the window with it open and the warm summer night air blowing at her face. She smiled when she remembered it was the same kind of breeze when she first saw the White Rabbit and followed him down the hole. That was so long ago...back when times were simple and easy...back before the White Rabbit was dead and she wasn't pregnant with a child the man she loved didn't want. Yes, she had been right before...she was so much safer in the asylum.
Matthew fell asleep, holding the picture while he slept. It was hours later, and when Sammy and Brian never came home, he was left undisturbed. It was nearly midnight when he woke up. Stretching, he yawned. Something hit the ground, and he looked down to see that it was the picture. Picking it up, he started upstairs to Alice's room. Taking a deep breath, he pushed open the door. "Alice?"
Alice had fallen asleep in her night gown at the window with it still open. She had barely moved since she sat there. Her hands rested on her stomach like a guard and she light breathing could barely be heard. The wind blew her hair about and made the silk sheets dance across the bed.
He set the picture down by the bed. Walking over to her, he picked her into his arms, groaning softly at her weight while he moved her to the bed so that she could sleep comfortably.
Alice's eyes fluttered open when she was set on the bed. She looked up at him, said nothing, and rolled over. When her eyes fell on the picture she reached over and set it down, so the picture faced down. She didn't want to see it or think about it. If she could wipe the past year from her mind...she would.
After getting undressed, he crawled into the bed beside her and hugged her to him. Whether she wanted it or not, he wasn't going to let her go anywhere tonight.
She didn't pull from him or say anything. Really, she felt a little numb. Closing her eyes, she prayed things would be better by morning.
She was cold. Though her body temperature was warm, she was still cold. There was nothing which he could do for her. She had made up her mind; and now he didn't have a choice but to go with her decision or lose her altogether. She was forcing him to do something, he just hoped that she would realize the possible consequences of these actions.
In the morning, to her surprise, things were better, only because she had finally decided that she knew what she was going to do. She rolled around and looked at Matthew and started shaking him to wake up.
Matthew groaned as she shook him awake. He instantly shielded his face in case she started hitting him. When no pain came he dared to open his eyes. "What is it?"
"You don't have to love it," she said softly. "I don't need you to. Sammy can be the father figure..."
His eyes widened as he heard this. "What?"
"You said you are sticking around because you love me...well...you can stay...but you won't have any obligation to the baby. Sammy buys everything for it anyways and he's so excited about it. He's love to play father," she explained softly. "You won't have to do anything...you won't have to have anything to do with it."
Matthew paused as he heard this. This was good. Wasn't it? "So, I can be with you...without any obligation to the child?"
Alice nodded. "But...just so we are clear, the baby will always come first...because it needs me."
He nodded slowly at this. "And the kid will end up thinking that Sammy, gay Sammy, is its father."
"Yes, if Sammy says it's ok."
Matthew was still in shock. He didn't know what to do. This was good. He could have Alice, and he didn't have to care for the child. This was simply perfect. Too perfect. The child would call Sammy...daddy. He frowned as he thought of that. It was one thing if another family took care of it. Out of sight and out of mind. However, having it beneath the same roof as him, running to someone else....
"And...I don't want another child," she added. "Or to marry you."
He shifted. "Who said anything about marriage?" His eyes were narrowed. "But...why wouldn't you marry me?" Not wanting to have another child he could deal with. That sounded good to him.
"I'll be with you, but I won't marry you. You refuse you child, Matthew. I don't want that for a husband." She sat up and stretched. She didn't hear Sammy come in last night, so she assumed he slept over at Brian's. Grabbing the phone next to the bed, she picked it up and dialed Brian's number. While it rang, she picked up the picture fame and started taking the picture out of it.
Matthew reached over and hit the button, turning the phone off. "Wait...just a second," he whispered.
She looked at him. "You know if I don't catch him early, he won't answer the phone when they start having sex."
"You have two months to talk to him about this. I just want a few minutes," he told her.
Sighing, she put the phone back on the hook. "What is there to talk about? I'm compromising."
"I know, and I'm glad. I really am. I just...want to talk about things." He sat up slowly, trying to organize his thoughts.
She turned to him and rested her back against the headboard. Her hands started rubbing her belly lovingly. "Alright."
He was getting tired of that stupid stomach. "I don't love the child," he said, making that point clear. "However, originally you said that you were going to wait until I saw it. Well, all I'm asking is that you keep to your word and wait until then. Wait until I am...certain of my position on all of this."
She sighed and shook her head. "I can't do that..." She looked down at her belly. "If Sammy says he will be the father, there is a lot of preparation to be done before the baby is born. Most likely it will share Sammy's room and for a couple of months, so will I so it doesn't wake you at night when it gets hungry. Most likely Sammy will take him or her to a hospital and have it's name put on a birth certificate with the baby since I can't. He'll need time to get things situated for himself as well. He'll have to talk with Brian. There is a lot that has to happen before the baby is born. And since you don't love it, this is the best option." She smiled as she stroked her belly. "Sammy is going to be so happy."
"That is all stuff that its father should be doing," he whispered. Fuck. When did things get so complicated?
"Duh, which is why I need Sammy to step up now. The planning needs to start. All you have to do is deliver it then you are done," she said. "Can I please call Sammy now?"
"I just.... I don't want to end up regretting this decision."
She stared at him. Was he joking? After all the fight and all the yelling...he was now having doubts about giving the baby away? Too bad. "I'm doing what's best for the baby. If you change your mind...you'll have to take it up with Sammy since he will be the stand in father." She grabbed the phone. Once more she dialed Brian's number.
He reached over and pressed down on the phone again. "Please, just let me finish. I don't.... I mean, it was so much easier when I just thought that we were going to give it away. I don't know if I could.... I don't know if I would be able to watch the...our child running into his arms calling him daddy."
"I don't understand why. You planed to abort it first then just give it away and now when I finally find the perfect solution, you aren't ok. It will need a father and you don't want it. This is the only way you can be with me since I'm keeping it."
"Yes, I did. I didn't...I don't think that having a child is a good idea. However, since you seem hell bent on keeping it I find that I am forced to relent in some ways. It will be hard enough staying here with the child; but knowing that Sammy would be its father.... That.... I don't know. Something about just seems wrong to me. I'm not even certain what it is, but it just feels wrong."
Her eyes were soft and she was trying hard not to cry. "It will need a father, Matthew...and I have found it one. I'm bending just as much as you are. The least you can do is let me have what broken family I've made."
"What if...I tried to be a father to it?" Those words were surprising coming from him; and truthfully he didn't know where they were coming from. He was adamant about the fact that this child was destroying his life; and now he was trying to argue about why he should keep it? Maybe he was crazy.
Alice cradled the phone. "I'm sorry...after everything you've said before...I don't believe you. Sammy will be a good father. I'm not asking anything from you. I'm not asking you to stay or go. I'm not asking you to take care of the child or to take care of me. I just need you to deliver it." She stood. "Now stop hanging up the phone. I don't want to play this game anymore. I have a child to prepare for." She pushed his hand from the button and dialed Brian's number, making sure he didn't make her hang up again.
Matthew nodded. Getting out of bed, he got dressed and went downstairs, not saying another word.
As the phone rang, Brian muttered a curse when he picked it up. "Hello?"
"Brian? It's Alice. Can you tell Sammy I need him to come home? It's an emergency," she said.
Brian looked at Sammy who was chained to the bed, gagged, and blindfolded. He sighed as he put down the lube and candle. "What kind of emergency are we talking about? Anyway it could wait about forty minutes to an hour?"
"It's about the baby...and if he finds out the news was delayed...I don't think he will be too happy. You know how he is about the baby," she explained.
He groaned into the phone. "Ten minutes?"
Alice's eyes narrowed. "No! Now!"
"Fine. Though I hope you know that we were making sexual breakthroughs here!" Turning off the phone, he looked at Sammy and whimpered. It wasn't fair!
Alice put the phone down and got dressed. She made her way down stairs and grabbed a banana while she waited for Sammy and Brian.
Sammy was there in thirty minutes. He walked in quickly scanning the room. "Alice? What's wrong? Is the baby okay? Why are the police outside?"
Alice stood. "Police..." She paled.
Sammy nodded. "They're talking to Matthew. Is everything okay?"
Alice pushed pass him and went to the window to look out. "Oh God...they've come to take him..." If she ran out there and begged for them not to, of course they would know how she was and take her in too. She turned to Sammy. "Oh my God! Can I never just have a moment to enjoy the good things before something else fucks up!"
"Calm down, Alice. Tell me what's going on!"
"He told me last night that cops were snooping around and asking him questions...he said that he might get taken away for murders..." She started to pace. Closing her eyes, she swallowed hard as tears slid down her face. "I have...to think of the baby..."
Sammy shook his head. Think of the baby? "Alice, if him getting hauled away by the cops wasn't the reason for your call, then what was?"
She shook her head. "Not now. Go out there and find out what's going on."
"That was before we created another life," she said softly. "I don't understand how you can't love your own child."
