Chapter 1…The Book and The Test

Kasura opens his front door quickly and quickly searches for the daily pile of mail. He doesn't find it so he figures his parents have already been home and brought in the mail. As he wonders into the kitchen, he spots the new volume of Azumanga Daioh sitting on top of all the other mail. He rips off the wrapping and sits down on the couch to read. About an hour later, the completely read manga sits on the bookshelf with volumes one through three. "What a way for it all to end," he said to himself as phone rang.

"Kasura-chan, did it come today?" The voice on the other end of the line belonged to Ayame, his best friend and fellow otaku.

"Yes, Ayame, it did. I already finished so you can come over and get it if you want," he told her, secretly hoping she agree.

"Alrighty then, I'll be there in about fifteen minutes. I'll bring Excel too so we can watch more of it," she replied… "And I have something else I need to talk to you about when I get there."

"Um…ok, that's fine," Kasura answered.

"Ok, I'll be there soon. Gotta get dressed. Byes."

Kasura hung up the phone and ran quickly up to his room, remembering the mess behind the door. Inside the toxic waste dump Kasura put some popcorn in the microwave and began stuffing the things on the floor in any possible place they would fit. He threw some pillows on the floor and pulled out the popcorn just as he heard Ayame's car pull the driveway. A few seconds later, the door flew open and he saw a bunch of random stuff carried by his best friend.

Kasura secretly checked out Ayame as she sat her stuff down and moved over next to him. He realized she's of mid height at about 5' 4" and very petite, except for her large, round breasts and large behind that makes her skin tight jeans bulge. Her blue eyes are the exact opposite of her bright pink hair, which is pulled back into two long, flowing pigtails. He knows that she is absolutely beautiful, but Kasura cannot tell her so himself.

"Kasura-chan," she starts, interrupting his thoughts, "can you please put in the DVD for me? We're on episode fourteen, `Prop.'" Ayame doesn't wait for an answer but instead shovels a hand full of popcorn in her mouth. Kasura gets up, puts in the DVD, and returns to his comfy seat beside Ayame.

*~~~~~~*~~~~~~*~~~~~~*~~~~~~*

After two episodes of Excel and three bags of popcorn, Ayame and Kasura head downstairs to the den and Kasura's manga collection to find the new issue of Azumanga. Before they could find it on the shelf, Ayame sat down on the sofa and presented a very interesting conversation.

"Kasura-chan," she said, "I have something I need to tell you but you have to promise not to laugh ok? Cause this is kind of a big deal to me," she added.

"Ok, I won't laugh, I promise," he replied as he sat down next to her.

She hesitated than begun her story. "Yesterday, when I was walking to the store, I passed a shop I've never seen before. It was called `Spells and Such' and it had a bunch of magical stuff in the window. So, like the loser I am, I walked in and took a look around. I even bought this bookmark with a place to write something. When I got to the counter the man there said I had just purchased a magical bookmark and that if I wrote the names of people on it and placed it in a manga, the people whose names were on the bookmark would become part of that manga's world. I wanted to ask you to try it with me so I wouldn't feel really stupid."

"Sure, why not? We really have nothing to lose and it would be fun to live in a manga world for awhile. But really, what are the chances of it actually working? That aside," he said questionably, "what manga do we want to try it on?"

"Well, Kenshin is definitely out. I really don't wanna die on this little trip. How bout Azumanga?"

"There's no killing in Azumanga…except maybe when Miss Yukari drives," Kasura replied. "It's peaceful, and it would be fun to live there for a little bit. So, when are we gonna try this thing?"

"There's no better time then the present so let's go a head and give it a shot," she quickly answered. The excitement could be heard in her voice, and he eyes just sparkled. She pulled the bookmark and a pen from her backpack purse and wrote hers and Kasura's names in two of the blanks. Kasura then ran over to the bookcase and got volume four of Azumanga before returning back to his seat next to Ayame on the couch.

The two read the manga together for the next hour but had not finished it before it was time for Ayame to start heading home. She placed the bookmark in the middle of the manga and closed the book tightly.

"That's a rip-off," she said impatiently. "I paid ten bucks for the thing and it doesn't even work."

"It's ok though," he said, trying to comfort her. "It was fun reading together anyway. But it's getting late so you should be heading home to get some rest."

"Alright," she agrees. "Hey, thanks for trying another one of my stupid ideas. I can always count on you." She kisses him lightly on the cheek, collects her stuff, and heads for the door. "Good night Kasura-chan. See you tomorrow."

"Uh…night." This is all he can possibly say to reply cause Ayame actually kissed him. He still sat there in a daze until he heard he car pull out of the driveway. After he regained his senses he spent the rest of the night cleaning up their party for two and dreaming about his best friend.
