Chapter Three

The crumpled paper rebounded off the metal bin, rolling a ways away from it. Another idea, wasted. Rayne slumped against the wall behind her bed, the curtains were drawn and she glared hatefully at the pad of lined paper in her lap. There was only a small lamp light in the shadowed room, casting an eerie yellow glow over her tear-reddened face. She looked up, only to glance at her door as it opened, Kira peeking her head in, a sad look on her face.

“Hey…I just wanted to get dirty laundry.” she said softly, Rayne blinked at her, then nodded in the direction of a pile on the floor. Kira always went on a cleaning spree when she was upset, Rayne isolated herself from anyone and everything and Mimi usually binged, meaning baking a bunch of crap and eating it. But they hadn’t seen any mess in the kitchen, let alone the person who usually made it. Upon this thought, both girls dumped what they were doing, Rayne basically tripping off the bed, and moving from the room. Rayne slid across the floor, stopping herself on the kitchen counter, gripping her cell tightly, and scrolling through names until she found Mimi’s cell. Kira looked in each room, top to bottom, she reached Mimi’s room last, coming out slowly, looking at something held in her hand. Rayne let out a frustrated growl, glaring at her phone with malice.

“She isn’t answering!!” Rayne called again, then paused, hearing Mimi’s cell ring close to her. She closed her phone, staring straight ahead, the ring stopped. She called it again, it went off, turning to face Kira, she closed it again. It stopped. She walked over, putting her cell on the counter, holding out her hand she took the cell in Kira’s. The small dark screen read 3 missed calls. Mimi was out of reach…and alone.

“IR 17;m not doing it!” Rayne screamed at Kei for the second time. Her hands had been firmly placed on the white table, she stood, glaring deep into his eyes.

“You have to, Rayne. For Mimi’s sake…they can he--” she cut him off quickly, her good attitude deteriorating.

“SHUT-UP!! WHAT THE FUCK DO THEY CARE ABOUT US ANYWAY!?!?!?!?” he sent her a hardened glare, Kira scooting as far away from the argument as she could, making Rayne even more mad at this point would be a death wish. But Kei didn’t back down.

“Call. NOW.” he demanded in a stern, father-like, warning voice. Rayne stood her ground a solid minute before tears slipped down her face and she pulled out her cell.

“It’s ringing.” she told them, placing the phone on speaker and setting it on the middle of the table. It clicked on the other line, it had been picked up.

Hello?” Max’s voice. Everyone stayed quiet, expecting Rayne to speak and her not wanting to. “Uh, hello?” his voice confused.

Rayne.” Kei warned, she sighed.

Rayne? Why are you calling Ka--hey!!” it sounded as if there was a small struggle, then the phone was taken away.

What do you want?” he snapped. Kai, of course.

“Kai…we…” her voice was slow and soft, she searched for what to say to him carefully.

What?” he asked, annoyed at her pause. Kira nudged her arm, she let out a shuddering breath, and continued.

“M-Mimi went missing.”

WHAT?! GIVE ME THE PHONE!!!” Max’s flustered voice was clearly heard, along with a struggle, Kai was most likely holding him back from the phone.

SHUT-UP, MAX!” Kai yelled at him, Max instantly obeyed. “When?” his voice was calmer now.

“Ummmm…”

̶ 0;You don’t know?” annoyed again.

“Not long after 7:00 this morning, I know that much.” Kira spoke, from behind Rayne. Nothing could be heard on the other line except Kai’s breathing.

Where are you? We’ll come help, I guess.” a silent cheer came from Max and Kira almost yelled ’You GUESS?!’ but kept her mouth shut, not wishing any more damage to be done.

“Thanks, Kai.” Rayne said kindly, peace on her features.

Yeah, yeah…where are you?” he repeated in a demanding voice. Kei grabbed the phone, taking it off speaker.

“Get a piece of paper and a pen.”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The moment Kai stepped out of the car and into the sun, he was tackled into a hug by Rayne. He stood, stunned, unknowing on what to do when she started sobbing into his chest. He looked at Ray for guidance, he instantly grabbed Kira and showed Kai to pat and rub her back to soothe her, he did so. When she finally pulled away, rubbing her eyes, she looked at him, he actually seemed a little worried.

“I’m sorry…” she mumbled, running her fingers over the wet patch she had created from her tears. He shook his head, rubbing her cheek softly, for the first time she felt his hands were actually very soft.

“So…how can we help?” Ray asked, looking down at Kira, hoping for the same scene, but she didn’t seem very dazed. Upset, but not that much. Kei put a hand on his shoulder, grasping his attention.

“We need to figure out the places she likes to go. Let’s go inside, Rayne you need to record that song anyway, just vocals. We have the music, go ahead. Go.” he shooed her off, she bounded up the steps to the recording studio on the third floor. Kai’s eyes followed her until she disappeared around a corner. “Go with her. You should hear the song anyway.” Kai nodded to him, going up the stairs after her.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Rayne stood in front of the mic, headphones over her ears, looking through the glass at the man behind the counter, eyes widened upon seeing Kai. He glanced at her, then smiled, sitting on the small couch behind the man. The man-Joseph, he was called-pushed a button so she could hear him.

“Are you ready, Rayne?” he had an Australian accent. She nodded, with a thumbs up to him, in the headphones, she could hear the background music begin to play. A soft tune was first, then she took a silent breath, beginning her part.

Don’t stop breathing, just because I say
Keep on living through everyday

You can’t save me
Force yourself to turn away

I will cry,
But please don’t see…

The pathetic and miserable me

You say I can be strong,
But I know I’m too weak
I can never be the person that you need

So you see…

I find I won’t last very long
And yet, you comfort me
What do you see in me?

My soul has been lost
And can’t be found
Try to ignore that very small sound

Of my fragile heartbeat

I may cry, I know I will
But promise me
You’ll never see…

The pathetic, miserable…
Cold and heartbroken…
The other side of who you think I am,
Who I could be…

That other side of me…

Her voice slowed, the music ended, all Kai could do was stare. A new song and he knew it was really a letter to him, he knew every word was a cryptic message. If all he thought of her as that person who fraternized with someone she barely knew, then there was no point in him ever seeing her for who she really was. She came out with a small smile, he opened his mouth to say something, but her phone went off, the chorus to Nickleback’s Stoned playing loudly. She flipped it open,

“Hello?”

Hurry downstairs! We know where she is!!
