Chapter Five

Kai poked her again, Rayne just flipped over. He narrowed his eyes, poking her stomach harshly.

“IT’S THE APOCOLYPSE!!” she bolted upright screaming, then she looked at the floor and noticed she had knocked him over. “Oh, uh…oops…I guess…”

“What? No ‘Sorry, Kai.’?” she shook her head,

“No…not really.” he rolled his eyes, pulling himself up from the floor. She climbed out of the bed, stretching and yawning. He smirked, jumping on her, dropping them to the cushiony surface of the un-made bed. They laughed, Rayne wrapping her arms around his neck, entangling her fingers in his hair.

“Don’t really wanna see this right now.” Kai turned his head a little to see who was behind them, Rayne untangled herself from the blankets and her boyfriend, practically falling off the bed to get to the red-headed boy.

“TALA!!!” she squealed excitedly, jumping on him. Her legs went around his waist, arms around his neck. He laughed, putting his arms around her.

“Nice to see you again, Rayne.”

“I missed ya’, big bro!” Kai sat up, scratching his head.

“’Sup, Tala?” he asked, Rayne twisted around to look at Kai.

“You know my big brother?” she asked, tapping Tala’s cheek. Kai nodded,

“We went to school together.” She slid off of him, looking into his equally blue eyes.

“Why’re ya’ here?” he scratched his head,

“Well…strange news. About dad.” Rayne looked worried, he waved his hands, “No, no, no, no! Nothing bad. But um…dad got re-married.” She squealed happily.

“Yay! Our little daddy’s growing up!” she giggled, then stopped, “Wait, what’s her name? Do we have a new name? Or can I still keep momma’s name?”

“You can keep mom’s name, and I can keep dad’s. Kai even gets to keep his.” they looked confused, Kai spoke.

“Why am I being put into this?”

“Well, that’s the strange part. Your mom married our dad, congrats…you lovebirds are now related.” Tala laughed sheepishly as Rayne brought him to her level harshly,

“You better be yankin’ my chain Tala Ivanov or so help me I’ll…I’ll…” she threw her arms up, swearing a long, unending sentence of Russian curses. Then angry tears fell down her cheeks, “Why didn’t daddy tell me first!? When did they get married?!”

“Um, they just got back from their honeymoon….and sent me to come find you two.” she looked about ready to scream, “They didn’t want it to interfere with your carriers!”

“You know what?! I’m going to do a bunch of stuff that daddy doesn’t like, then tell him it was because I didn’t want to ruin his carrier!”

“Like what?” Kai asked, confused.

“I’ll cut my hair.” Tala’s eyes widened, but he kept quiet. “I’ll start wearing makeup.” he twitched, “I’ll sleep around.” Kai twitched at that, “I’ll smoke, I’ll drink.” Tala seemed to becoming more and more frantic and twitchy. “I’ll do drugs!” she yelled, Tala snapped, grabbing her shoulders in a big brother way.

“No! No my poor baby sister can’t!” he hugged her tightly, scared to let go. She weaseled away from him enough to say one more thing.

“I’ll marry!” Tala stopped completely, his face darkening a little. He let go of her, he snapped around grabbing Kai by the collar.

“KAI! YOU’RE HER BIG BROTHER NOW TOO! DO SOMETHING!!! STOP HER OR SO GOD HELP ME I’LL--” he stopped, turning when he heard his name. He yelled in anguish when he saw Rayne holding scissors to her hair. “No!!! Rayne, don’t!!”

“Then change it! Get them apart now!” she screamed,

“I can’t!”

“Fine! Have it your way then!” she closed the scissors quickly, one trembling hand holding the hair she had cut off. Her once waist-length hair now fell only to her shoulders. “Check number one off the list.” she growled.

“Rayne…” She looked over at Kai who had uttered her name, she threw the hair at him, it falling slowly to the floor.

“I told you I’d do it.” then she stomped out the door, Kai stared blankly at the shimmering blue hair on the carpet, hearing Kira and Mimi yelling at Rayne. She yelled back, her voice choking. She was crying now. He ran from the room, out to where everyone else was, he grabbed Rayne from behind, hugging her tightly. “Let go, Kai! Let me go!” she struggled, trying to get away, but Kai was much stronger than her.

“Does it really bother you that much?” she nodded, the ends of her short hair brushing his cheek, “Why?”

“Because then we can’t be together. It’s wrong…you’re my brother now, Kai…I’m not allowed to love you like I do anymore.” Tala cleared his throat and they all looked at him.

“I probably shouldn’t tell you the last of the news, but it would kill me if you found out differently.”

“What is it?” Ray asked, putting a hand on Kai’s shoulder gently.

“Kai’s betrothed to a Russian model now.” Mimi gaped, looking at Rayne.

“Ray--” she jumped away as Rayne knocked things of shelves and kicked things over. Angry tears rolling down her face, she picked up a picture, holding it over her head like she was going to throw it, but stopped. Hands shaking, she pulled it to her chest, clinging to the picture for dear life. She slumped to her knees, even though her hair had been cut, it fell over her face enough to hide it.

“I don’t want to lose him…it isn’t fair…I’ve already lost so much…” she mumbled. Tala strode over, placing a caring hand on her shuddering back, kneeling down to her level. She turned to him and cried into his chest. “I want to go home.”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

“Sh e really has lost a lot you know.” Tala informed Kai. They sat across from each other on a private jet belonging to Tala. It was dark now, and they were still an hour and a half away from Russia. Rayne was curled in a seat, leaning on Ray, his head on hers protectively. Kira was on his other side, laying on his upper arm. Mimi and Max laid together on their seats across from the three. Kai and Tala, the only one’s awake, were on the other side of the jet. Kai looked up from his lap.

“What do you mean?” Tala leaned on his fist, looking out the window onto the dark clouds.

“The first things she lost was me, when I went to school for elementary to middle.” Kai nodded, remembering hearing stories about the quiet, patient Rayne as a kid, and about how she cried when Tala left. “This is the first time she’s seen me since she started being famous.”

“Oh…that has to hurt her a lot.”

“Then while I was at school, her favorite cat died. That cat was a nuisance but she loved it. And when she became famous she lost mom and dad because she left for America.” Kai nodded, “Then not even two years into being this cool famous, role model…mom died in an accident…and on Rayne’s seventeenth birthday.”

“That was when she…”

“When she stopped recording music and everybody thought it was a sex scandal.” Tala looked Kai directly in the eyes for a few seconds before Kai looked away. “That killed her inside, but she started up again because I told her to never give up.” he gave a soft laugh, shaking his head. “Now she loses dad…and you…” Kai covered his eyes, not wanting Tala to see him this way. “Rayne throws temper tantrums like a five-year-old, she’s a bit snotty, she’s a brat and a little conceited, also she has low self-esteem, but…she’s my little sister and it hurts me to see her upset. So I give her whatever I can. But the only thing that satisfies her…is being loved by those who she loves greatly.” Tala patted Kai’s head, “So it’s not really the fact that she’s losing you and dad that hurts her so much…it’s really that she feels like she’s losing your love.”

“I could never stop loving her!” Kai told him, Tala smiled.

“Then make sure she knows so. Remember Kai, she’s my little sister. Break her heart and I’ll break your face.” he said it so seriously, Kai couldn’t help but laugh, Tala joining in a second later. This is how it had been when they were kids, and it was nice to be with an old friend again.
