The plane was in the air and the Bladebreakers sat quiet. They had been given a private plane so that they could prepare for the upcoming match against the Unholy Alliance later that day. Anya had been very quiet ever since they found out that they would battle each other. She was sitting in her seat, looking out the window, refusing to meet anyone's eyes. She had a distant look of despair in her eyes, and somehow, she was millions of miles away. They had asked her about the Unholy Alliance several times, but she refused to answer. “You are safer if you don't know anything.” She just replied and refused to say anything else.
Kai thought about the different Anya they had faced in the arena. She seemed to have faded away a bit and the old Anya was shining through again, but she was still there, under the surface. She had told them that she wasn't human, or almost not. Maybe they had caught a glimpse of the real Anya underneath. He felt a strike of fear run through his heart as he thought about the Anya they had faced that day. She had frightened him, but at the same time he'd felt that he could have died for her if she'd asked him. He wasn't good with feelings; he didn't seem to know how to handle them. They twisted his head around and he didn't like it at all. Why did she have to come here? Why had just he met her? He was happy with the world he had before she came, but now? He didn't know.
Why did she have to say those strange things to him? Telling him about greater things and that he should long for more? Couldn't she just have left him to be happy in the world he'd chosen to live in? He sighed silent; things were so much more complicated now. How could she do those things to him? He gazed into her eyes and felt like he was going to drown in the deep waters they contained. She made him wish for more than what he had, tempted him to know more, to be more and to feel more. How could one girl do that? He could see her sit in front of him, beautiful and magnificent as always. So strong and proud, but at the same time, she was so hopelessly broken. Every inch of her expressed sadness and agony, she looked so lonely.
Max leaned forward and touched her arm.
“Are you okay Anya? You don't talk to us and you look like the world is about to end. What is wrong?” She slowly turned to face him, kind and caring Max, always so cheery and shiny. Her eyes seemed to have lost all their shine; she hated herself for what she was about to tell them. Her gaze sunk to the floor, a dark-blue plane rug.
“I will have to leave you soon. Just after our first match I'm afraid. Our time together has run out, the time of change and war has begun. You cannot win against the Unholy Alliance; they are empowered by the dead who serves a greater purpose than you do. Just like me, they have been chosen by whatever God there is, to be torn apart in this great war. God does not care for the smaller things and he is cruel. He never forgets, he never forgives. They are the children of ruin, destined to stand by my side against the darkness. I cannot explain how much pain this causes me, just let me say that I love you all. You are the greatest friends I have ever had; you are the only ones who haven't judged me. So for all it is worth, thank you, and forgive me for all the pain I have caused you.” They looked very chocked by her speech, their mouths slightly open and asking expressions in their eyes. Ray seemed to come back to life and leaned forward and gripped her hand tightly in his.
“You have not caused us any pain. I'm grateful for having the chance to ever meet someone like you Anya. You have taught me the most important lesson of all. `Life isn't about the number of breaths you take. It's about the moments that take your breath away.' You took all of our breaths away Anya. I'm sorry for what you have just told us, because I'm going to miss you and your courage. You are magnificent indeed. If we all serve a greater purpose, then maybe the God will bring us together again one day.” He smiled to her and she smiled back.
“Thank you.” She whispered
Tyson had a strange expression on his face, a hint of an emotional struggle underneath. He turned his gaze to the floor, avoiding looking at any of them. His whole body was tense and you could sense anger underneath the chill surface. Anyas green orbs were full of agony and pain as she gazed at him.
“Tyson, please... Try to understand, I have no choice. This is the way it must be. I'm doing this for you, to protect you, to keep you safe.” She pleaded to the angry blunette. Her eyes were filled with tears. Suddenly, Tyson jerked his head up. His eyes were full of anger and blame. He flew to his feet and shouted:
“What do you mean `It's all for the best'?! How can it be?? You can't just leave us now, we are a team, remember?! We need you Anya, you can't go, I'll hate you if you go!!” His eyes were blistering and he trembled. Then Anya did something very strange, she smiled. A sad and humorless smile, but still she smiled.
“You humans are so strange, do you know that? You are so easily devoted to things. That's why I admire you so much. You are everything I've ever craved to be, everything I've ever longed for. So fragile, like pieces of glass, but at the same time so strong and devoted. You have the ability to think with your hearts, like only love itself could conquer everything, even death. You are everything I've ever wanted to be, everything I admire. And therefore I will fight to protect it, and it's all thanks to you. You have given me the strength I need to fight; before I met you I had been hiding in the darkness for so many years. I will go Tyson, you may hate me for it, but I'm still going. I shall fight, and I shall fight for you.”
