Beyblade Fan Fiction ❯ The Truth Behind Demons ❯ Forecasting the Future ( Chapter 9 )
Chapter 9.
Sunday Morning, December 12th. 11:50 a.m. Rei is at work in his uncles restaurant Neko-kin helping the man out with the Sunday duties of cleaning up the kitchen, putting the chairs onto the tables after he mopped the floor and doing any other little odd job that needed to be done while his uncle and the other staff members moved about here and there. Among them, sitting at the table, on the far end of the wide room are Tyson and Ozuma. One watching his friend copy the homework he and Rei did the other day and the other doing said job.
"So what did you guys do last night?" Asks Tyson erasing a spelling mistake on his worksheet. "Did you talk to him about the high schoolers- but you didn't mention my name, right?"
"Not much. We just hung out, although I should tell you- I did kinda make-out with him." He tapped some ashes into the tray before him.
Waving a hand Tyson shook his head. "It's all good, we're bro's- just don't do it again." He said in all seriousness.
"You have my word." He passed him the cigarette. "Anyway, he says he and this guy Kai are just friends and nothing more."
Taking a puff from it, he turned his head watching the mentioned boy moving about the large area at a rate that seemed a little sluggish. "They'd better be; last thing I wanna do is get into a fight with some guy I don't even know."
Ozuma shrugged indifferently. "Most fights are taken up with people you don't know. You could probably take him."
"Tah, if I knew what the guy looked like."
"Tell Rei to invite him over, then." Grabbing Tyson by the shoulder, he says enthusiastically. "Or find out when the guy is coming over, then you can 'accidentally' stop by and get a look at him, then when Rei isn't around you can kick the guys ass."
The Granger boy thought that over, then shook his head. "Naah, I'd feel like too much of an ass checking up on him."
"Then stop asking!" He snubs his cigarette out into the tray. "You done?"
Looking back at the spiky haired, mixed boy. "Uh, yeah. Here." Pushing the sheets over to him, Tyson stuffs his notebook sheets into his book bag that's hanging by a strap to the back of his very fancy, black wood, white cushioned seat.
Rei dropped a seat, it was mostly the angry growl that came after that that made his two friends eye him suspiciously. From the corner of their eyes, the two boys saw Stan Kon peeking from the kitchen to see what the noise was about before he wrote it off and disappeared back into the kitchen.
"Wonder what his problem is?" He asked, referring to his boyfriend.
Ozuma shook his head slowly, then tapped Tyson again. "So listen, has Rei everrrrr...." he trailed off a minute trying to find a way to sum it up. "Talked in his sleep before? When the two of you were together."
Tyson licked the side of mouth as he thought about it. "Heck if I know. I'm usually passed out long before he's asleep so- maybe he does, why, has he been doing that?"
Ozuma's eyes looked far away as he flashed back on last night. The two of them laying in Rei's bed because the cat like boy said it was much better than a sleeping bag, and that they were friends so there was no harm in it. Ozuma climbed in and they giggled as they wrapped their arms around each other, muttering about how the other should try not to get so worked up over their sexy body. But as Rei fell asleep he shoved Ozuma away....
"He told me not to touch him," he was saying out loud through his own flash back. "I said I was sorry, but then he started panting like he had been running for a long time." Looking at his lap, he sighed. "I think he might have even started to cry...."
"Why didn't you wake him up?" Tyson asked before glancing at Rei. No wonder he looks so tired; guy probably didn't get any sleep last night.
"I don't know, I would have felt weird about it." Replies the half indian. "And most people don't remember their dreams anyway."
"Yeah, I guess that is more like boyfriend stuff."
Ozuma nods to that. Looking out the window he sees a tall boy with red hair peering into the window. He's wearing a rain coat like an idiot when it's clearly sunny out. Of course, the boy looks like he's clean out of his mind anyway, it was the strange relaxed smile upon his face that made him stand out. Poking Tyson for the fourth time that hour, Ozuma gestured with his head in the direction of the large glass window.
"Who's that?"
Looking, he cocks his head for a better view. "I've never seen him before- oh wait! Yeah I have!" Pointing he says. "Isn't that that one kid Brooklyn?"
Looking again Ozuma's eyes show recognition. "Oh yeeeah, it's been so long I forgot the weird-o even went to our school.... He sure got tall over the year."
"Yeah."
Looking to where the boys gaze was, he scrunched his eyes. "Looks like he's watching Rei."
"Huh?" Double taking, he snaps his fingers and reaches around into his book bag for something. "Good old highlighter." Pitching the thing at the window, the two of them laughed when the red haired weirdo jumped from start.
Looking to where the marker came from, Brooklyn taps the window and points at the Kon boy. Tyson smirks and shakes his head before giving the boy the finger. Ozuma does the same. glaring at them the red head decides to get the boys attention his self and taps on the glass.
Looking up from the reservation booklet, Rei closes it and heads across the room. Opening the door, he steps outside from ear shot.
"Should we go listen?" Ozuma was already out of the seat.
"Naah," Pulling the shorter boy back into his seat. He shifts in his chair a bit. "Rei's cool; he'll send that joker away."
Outside; the Kon boy looked over his strange friend before saying. "Expecting rain?"
"Weather says any minute now." He glanced over his shoulder at a woman that went by pointing while chuckling at him. "She should laugh she's wearing white."
"And you wonder why you don't have any friends." Concludes Rei. "What are you doing out here? Did you wanna talk or make weather forecast."
"You're in a good mood- which is perfect because I have to tell you something."
"What?"
Looking into the restaurant to ensure that Rei's friends weren't watching he led him from the door anyway. "Listen, it's about Kai's party tonight... I don't think you should go."
"Why, is something bad gonna happen?"
"No. It's actually the opposite, which is why you should stay at home."
Rei scrunched his brows. "Why would I stay home if something good's gonna happen? Do you know how long I've wanted a permanent 'in' with those guys?" Patting the boy on the shoulder, he says. "Brooklyn, you've gotta lighten up."
Brooklyn just frowned turning his eyes to the ground. He knew the real reason Rei shouldn't go to that party, but he couldn't tell him that- although, maybe if he did it would be less likely to happen. After all, when people are skeptics they tend to avoid situations just to confirm that the person saying something to them is actually wrong.
"Rei I-.." Slipping out of his rain coat, he holds it over both of their heads as a downpour drops out of the sky. The rain is falling hard enough to sound like a stampede of horses running the, now wet, streets.
Rei looked up at the sudden darkness of the red heads coat then he looked down at the boy holding it over them. Narrowing his eyes when he sees the light blush on the staring boys cheeks, he backs away out into the rain, but only long enough to open the door to the restaurant. "I'll keep it in mind to watch out for any extremely good mojo. Thanks for the... warning?"
"No problem!" He says cheerfully, while hoping that he shook the blush from his face.
"You wanna come in?" Asks the Chinese teen. "We're gonna have lunch when my work is done, you're more than welcome."
"Uh?" He swallowed visibly hard, then took a step forward. "But won't your friends mind?"
Waving a hand, he says. "Nah. Besides, I'm A rank I can recruit anybody I want- but be careful I may ignore you for a week." He laughs before turning into the place.
Brooklyn looked confused by that but held onto the door that was about to close and walked in as well; giving his coat a quick shake outside before walking further in. Shivering from the slight chill the place had, he walked over to where Tyson and Ozuma were sitting but decided to sit his self at the table next to them. The two eye him with daggers but lower the wall when Rei comes over to the table.
"Guys this is Brooklyn." He introduces. "Brooklyn, this is Tyson and Ozuma."
"Nice to finally meet you, although to be fair, we did used to know each other in grammar school."
"I don't remember." Says Tyson.
"Neither do I." Chimes Ozuma.
Sighing heavily, Rei stands to answer the phone. Perfect distraction, thinks Tyson, as he looks at the new boy. "So, Brooklyn was it. I saw your little disappearing act out there," leaning closer to him he snarls. "And if you know what's good for you, you'll stay away from my boyfriend- or didn't Rei mention that."
Not intimidated in the least, the boy smiles. "He didn't have to, I already know who you are and as far as I can tell I don't have to ruin your relationship with Rei, you're doing a fine job of that yourself."
"What'd you say?!" He nearly lunged across the table at him but was pulled back by Ozuma. "Let go! I'm gonna wipe that smug look off this jerks face."
"Forget it Ty', we can always get him later." When the other boy was back in his seat, Ozuma whispered. "Besides, if he really is a friend of Rei's I doubt he'd want you slugging the guy. Better wait till we're alone with him."
"Right!" Turning back to Brooklyn he shouts in a not so conspicuous tone. "You got lucky weirdo, because if Rei weren't here they'd be wiping your blood off the floor."
Crossing his arms, he replies. "Yeah, I'm scared." Glancing at the clock on the wall, he stands up. "Looks like it's time for me to go. Hope you boys won't miss me too much."
Snarling, Tyson thinks about following the boy out but from the corner of his eyes he sees Rei coming, so he lets him go. Rei watched the boys departure then sits down. Gesturing with his thumb over to the phone he says. "Party of seven, Tuesday." The two of them nod. "Where's he going?"
"Gonna get a start on his life long 'alone time'." Mocks Tyson.
"I'll bet," says Rei as he takes one last look around the place. "I'm gonna tell my uncle that we're leaving."
"What about lunch?!" He stands and gathers his things in the process.
"We'll eat somewhere else."
"But this is free!" Pouts Tyson, planning to complain all the way to wherever they were gonna eat.
"Never trust anything that's free." Says Rei heading to the kitchen.
Ozuma looked to Tyson signing the whirling finger at the ear indicating that their cat-like friend was insane. It took a while before the boy came back, nearly twenty minutes and when he returned in his hands was a tray with three plates on it.
"Lunch is served."
"Oh come on! You made us stand here for like twenty minutes thinking we had to go!"
"Why would we leave?" He asks sitting down. "It's raining." Rei's two friends sat down and scooted their chairs closer to the boy, slapping a hand to his forehead they both nod. "What?"
"He's not hot." Confirms Ozuma.
"His tongue isn't coated." Confirms Tyson recalling the good morning he got.
Rei shrugged their odd behavior off and started into his lunch.
Leaning back in their chairs so they can see each other without Rei seeing them they mouth 'Sleep deprivation'. straightening the seats, they eat their lunch as well.
* * *
It's later that day, around dinner and Rei is getting ready to leave for the party. The steam from the shower escaped into the main part of the bathroom fogging the mirror so that you couldn't see a thing through it. Rei dried himself off as he walked over to it to brush his teeth. Looking up at the black blur that is his hair attempting to show through the steam, he reached up a finger and rubbed a clear patch where his eyes are; the gold colored orbs stared back at him, emotionless, almost dead.
Lowering his finger, he draws a curved mouth for himself. A smile. Glancing at the mouth, then his eyes, then his own straight lined lips showing between the drawn-in curve he raised his hand, balled it into a fist then slammed it into the mirror, cracking it considerably.
His hand shook from the ripples of pain running through it as he yanked it back. Looking down at the streams of blood that were starting to drip onto the floor; his eyes blur with tears that began to follow the trail.
Looks like he's at it again.
When will he ever learn.
You'll always be alone... no one will ever accept you- NEVER!
Why doesn't he just give up and stop bothering the world.
It's because he honestly thinks he'll be accepted.
Rei...
Rei....
....Rei......
Why are you doing this?! He shouts holding his head. Why are you harassing me!? I did nothing to you!
It had been so long since he heard the voices. The two men and the woman. They have been talking to him since he was a young boy and he hasn't been able to fully keep them away. The medication used to work, but now... now it was starting to wear off. But the bottle he carried with him was pretty old. He really needed some fresh ones before he could be rid of those damned people again. Brooklyn. He could see into the future and for that people treat him like a freak, but he doesn't care. He almost seems to enjoy being alone.
How can anyone enjoy that? How can anyone want to be by themselves? Maybe I should ask him what these voices are. At least he wouldn't look at me like I'm crazy and he might even have a better solution to getting rid of them. I could always ask him tomorrow, I've gotta get ready for Kai's party. His face scrunched in pain. Looking down at where the pain came from, he frowns. When the hell did that happen? It must have happened when the mirror shattered. How can no one feel the walls caving in, how can they not see what it's doing to the house.
The phone in the hall rang distracting him from his thoughts. For a minute he thought that his brother might get it, but then he remembered that he had a date so out the door he went, nothing but a towel around his waist to answer the phone. "Hello?"
"Rei, this is Miss Ito. I really wish you had come in today, I really need to speak with you." The woman almost sounded desperate. What did she want from him?
"I told you, I can't come in until I come in. So back off!" He slammed the phone down hearing her shout for him to "wait". Like that would happen. Heading into his bedroom, he heard faint sounds of talking coming from downstairs. Listening for a second, he heard the butler's voice and someone else’s. Closing the bedroom door, he quickly dressed in a pair of blue jeans and a white collared shirt, pulling a blue sweater vest over it. He wasn't sure what kind of party Kai was having but he was sure that since the boy was rich it would be ritzy and to Rei he'd rather be comfortable but the style had a little class to it. He decided that he'd leave his hair out though, since it is a party. But he'd at least brush it fairly good.
His face scrunched in pain when he felt the little pieces of glass move in his hand. I forgot all about that. I'd better get some bandages.
A soft knock at the door indicated that whoever was at the front door was obviously there to see him, so pulling it open, he expected to see Tyson- maybe Kai; he could have come to pick him up, but he was shocked to be greeted by the strange red head instead. Brooklyn looked Rei up and down then his eyes dropped to the floor at the pitter patter sounds from the blood dripping off the boys finger tips.
"Rei, what happened to your hand?"
"The mirror," he said in a bland tone.
"Here, let me help you." Heading into the bathroom, he reached into the medicine cabinet and pulled out a box of gauze. Walking back to Rei's bedroom, he sat him down on the couch and knelt before him to wrap his hand. The other boy made sure he did a good job, but all the while he continued to steal glances at the beautiful teen. He couldn't help it! Rei closed his eyes and began to hum; some soft lilting tune that he's heard or just made up and for a moment, Brooklyn just kind of watched him..... But there was something in the air, something edging him on..... something..... something.....
Leaning up toward the unguarded teen; his heart racing, palms sweating as his hands came to a still in their doctoring the cuts and he closed his eyes as he pressed his lips onto the Chinese boys. To Brooklyn, it felt as though Rei had kissed back since there was a bit of give before he moved away but the angered look on the boys face said otherwise.
Swallowing he said. "I-I'm sorry."
"Get out,"
"I had to know!" He stood up backing away toward the door. "It wasn't to be mean or anything."
"Will you just leave! You're bothering me!"
"I'm going, I'm going... but Rei?"
He made an angered sigh, hoping after this the boy would back off. "What?"
"I think you look really great."
Rei blinked at that, and replied. "Brace yourself, I don't care."
Blushing, Brooklyn held a hand up to show he understood and was leaving. "Right. Good bye Rei... I-I'll see you at school tomorrow right?"
"If I go."
"O-okay.... Bye."
"OUT!" When the door closed he muttered. "Asshole." Running the back of his hand across his mouth, he looked at the bandages. I shouldn't have been a jerk to him... he might be the only real friend I've got..... Well, can't think about it now. I've gotta go. Grabbing his wallet for just incase, he stuffs the thing into his back pocket and heads out.
