Chapter 24
'Why did I come to school today?' Wonders the boy. 'I could barely get out of bed when I woke up, so naturally I agitate my muscles more by coming to school- It's what a Kon would do.' He froze when his gaze reached an odd pair standing just ahead of him in the hall, close enough to kiss. 'Should have seen this coming.' Thinks the teen moving from the wall that supported his lean. 'I leave for 2 weeks and suddenly everything is upside down.' He grunts feeling pain shoot up his leg as it refused to move in its sluggish state. His intentions were to come to school at normal hours but he ended up missing half the day because his muscles ached so badly on the walk over he had to keep making stops to rest.
'Alright Rei, pick yourself up. We didn't come all the way here to blow appearances.' Straightening his back, he holds his head up high and continues down the hall.
"Rei," says Tala approaching him. He paused when the once missing child turned an inflamed glare on him.
Tyson thought about attempting to speak with him but he knew that that was the last thing that Rei would want. He had to admit, though, he was very glad to see him. Rei was gone for so long he was actually starting to give up hope in ever seeing him again, he wanted to make things right. Tell him that he's sorry for what he did and that he never intended to hurt him, ever. But truth be told, he and Max have something and it was foolish of him to try to get something else with a boy who clearly wanted a deeper relationship than he wanted to give- not that his love was shallow. He really does care for Rei, but... he wasn't sure if he were ready for someone like him. A boy who wants commitment and one love when he, Tyson, wants many.
The bell rang. Everyone who is staring at Rei, making his way down the hall, don't move an inch. Jaws drop to the floor at his missing glory of hair and the red coloring sprinkled about his face from still healing wounds. Where had the boy been? On the streets? Was he ok? Everyone knew that he had gone missing but no one knew why. They were also curious as to why Tyson, Rei's boyfriend, wasn't helping him when he looked as though he needs it.
It wasn't until the boy had gone into his class that the crowd of students began to whisper, each one making up a different scenario about what happened to the once popular boy. Rape? Abuse? Did his family have a fight? Did he and Tyson have a fight? Did he run away from home as a romantic gesture? Why would he come back?
"Kai," says Tala into his cell phone as he's leaving the school. "Rei came to school. Should we call Lee?"
Tyson watched the boy go. Turning his attention then back to where Rei had once been, he walks to his own class and hopes for a chance to speak with his ex during lunch.
The room is dead quiet. So boring your yawns have even stopped voicing themselves to say so. The air is cool and nearly everyone is still in their seats trying to keep warm due to the broken heating system that was promised to them tomorrow, which meant nothing to them today. Rei was the only student noticably postured since he is hunched over his desk, eyes closed semi sleeping.
'I'm so tired,' thinks Rei, a yawn at his lips. 'I just wanna go back to my place and sleep.'
The man at the front of the room clears his throat. Rei doesn't respond. He tries again, this time with a little more range. Seeing no change, he stalks over to the center of the room and slaps his hand down beside the boys face.
The startled male screamed inside, holding his left hand to his head. How could Mr. Shibata do that to him, how could he hurt him when he could still feel the knot on his head from hitting the dresser. The man had no soul.
"Mr. Kon, I'm glad you're so interested in an education, because for a moment there I thought that you might actually have been sleeping in my class."
"That's because I was." He spoke honestly. The class laughed. "I didn't do it on purpose... I'm just, very tired."
"Mhm. See that it doesn't happen again." Mr. Shibata adjusted his, thin wired, glasses before walking back to his place in front of the chalk board. "I expect this from Tyson but you, it's just not like you." The other students in class giggled at Rei's new attitude. Honestly, they sure could act like a bunch of girls.
'Maybe I should leave. Why stay where I'm not wanted.... I'll bet my uncle told everybody and they're all laughing at me- look at him, having another episode.' The thought of that made his eyes water; he couldn't cry. He refused to do so. What would it earn him except for more giggles and whispers. Unwanted staring and attention. What if someone asked him something personal, he feels so out of it right now he may just blurt out whatever comes to mind.
A boy, Urada Toshi, leans over in his desk touching Rei on the shoulder. "Are you ok?"
That did it. That unwanted affection broke the damn that held back the tears of this whole mess and he began to cry. Crack began to laugh, appearing, as always, out of nowhere. 'Look at them Rei. Look at them staring at you- judging you.... They know what you did, and they know who you are. Just give in and you'll be safe and secure forever.'
"Stop talking to me," he sobs.
The boy coward away at that, looking as though he were a small child who had burned his hand on the stove. Mr. Shibata had had enough. Using an authoritive tone, he asks Rei to leave the room until he was ready to ressume class normally. That stung the boy more than anything. Normal. He is normal, he's just a little new about it than everyone else.
Picking up his bag, he looked at the boy sympathetically before walking out. Toshi had fear in his eyes, the kind that wondered if Rei would ask his boyfriend to beat him up for talking to someone in better rank than themselves. Truth be told that boy looked adorible, he was sweet with a round face and bushy black hair that fell a little hard to one side than the other and he had innocent violet blue eyes that most people would kill for. But the teen was in no mood to comfort the boys fears, he was still crying to himself as he walked out of the room and down to the nurses office. He wanted to go. He didn't think he could take even one class at high school today. Kai would be there. Tala. All of them judging him.
Turning his head, he felt Crack grab a hold of his hand. Broken fingers giving a tight grip, though, how he wasn't sure. He could still see the man laying on top of him, whispering those words. Crumble, crumble, crack, crack. Until he screamed in his face. What he had done. It was....
"Rei Kon? Is that you?" A woman asks.
'Miki?' He wonders, turning his head. He didn't notice but his grip had tightened on his childhood nemesis' hand. Realizing that he must look like a headcase for real holding hands with airspace, he let go abruptly.
"It's me. Mrs. Yaminaka. I do attendance." She explains. "I didn't think you were coming in today, you've been absent for some time." Yaminaka reached for his forehead, but Rei recoiled. "Are you feeling ok?" Noticing the tear soaked cheeks he was sporting.
The lost boy had forgotten all about crying. He hadn't noticed when he had stopped but he was glad he did. Walking down the hall crying is the last thing anyone wants to do. The woman brushed off his defensive movement, speaking again.
"I contacted your uncle about this, but I'm not sure if you got it because strangely, he hung up on me."
'Crumble, crumble... Crack, crack.....' Thinks the boy absently, eye twitching.
"But it seems that you haven't been keeping your grades up in the advanced classes." The boys face screamed for her to speed it up. "You've been dropped from them I'm afraid. You'll be going to regular classes today. Do you remember which ones they are?"
"Get away from me." He said in an odd voice, stepping around her he continued on his way to the nurses office, hand reaching out for someone the woman behind him couldn't see. 'They're all so jealous of me, I see how they look at me.' He thinks. 'Assholes.'
The nurse felt the boys forehead. It isn't hot. But the look on his face tells her that there's something wrong with the young boy. Pulling a pen from her neatly styled bun, she scribbled something down on a slip of paper and asked him to give it to his teacher in the next class, telling him that he could leave as soon as someone came to pick him up. He told her he was fine walking but she insisted that he have someone drive him until he caved.
'Now what?' Leaving the nurses office, he walks down the hall. 'I may as well just go back to class then.' Blinking, he squints his eyes as someone comes into view; a mop of blue spikes that he recognized to be Kane. What was he doing wondering the halls, back pack around his shoulders, finger tracing the wall as he walked.
Looking up he smiles. "Hi Rei."
His mouth opened and he thought he greeted him back, until he found his self directly in the boys face, his hand in his as he spoke. "Kane, are you leaving?"
The boy shook his head. "Technically I wasn't really here." Rei cocked his brow and the boy went on explaining. "I'm visiting my grandmother this weekend and we're leaving early but my mother insisted that I come get my homework."
"But you are leaving?" Asks the Chinese teen.
Kane nods, smiling with a blush. "Why?"
Rei climbed into the boys car with him. Kane's mother agreed to take Rei home saying that it was sad that his uncle couldn't get off of work to come and get him. So he lied, he was lying to everyone now adays he no longer cared, because apparently the truth gets you beaten up and disowned. But as long as he was getting where he needed to go his conscious would clear up eventually. Rei couldn't help feeling fingers creep along his neck with Kane staring at him.
"What is it?" He asks.
"It's just that.... You're Rei! This is huge! I mean sure Tyson talks to me sometimes but that's Tyson, he talks a lot but you.... you're like... a mystery of the popular kids." His cerulean eyes shine with pride. "Man wait until I tell the others that I had Rei in my car."
"Just so long as you don't tell them where you've taken me." He mutters hoping that Kane got the serious tone he used.
".....Truthfully.... I always thought you kind of hated me." Admits the younger boy.
"Hate you? For what?"
"You tripped me, that first week of school. I thought that I was your sucker of the year or something- it's happened before with Kenny, some kids used to pick on him until Tyson told them to back off."
"Oh... that...." He actually thought Kane was the one who hated him for what he did. He never meant to do that, really, he just wanted all that attention off of him. "I'm sorry Kane, it was an accident. I was nervous with all those eyes on me so I looked for a 'scape goat." Shrugs.
"It's okay, really.... Although, it seems weird for someone as beautiful as you to be nervous about people looking at them. You think you'd be used to it."
"Things aren't always what they seem." He noticed the car pull up at his building. "I have to go. It was nice talking with you," turning to the boys mother he says. "And thank you for the ride." Closing the door, he walks away from the car.
"He's nice." Says Natasha.
"Yeah. he's really cool." Kane smiles. He can't help but wonder, though, why the Kon's would live in such a shabby place when they're such a rich family. Must be a 'humble' thing. His aunt won the lucky lotto and she remained in her run down old house rather than moving into a nice big, expensive one. He didn't know how she had spent the money but his family never saw a dime. Tisk, tisk.
.......................
Brooklyn brushed his hands through his hair as if trying to construct it into a better style by nothing but sheer willpower. Looking ahead to his destination he glances at the floor then approaches. "Kai?"
"What?" He asked, voice in different to whom was speaking to him.
"On the phone before- I wasn't eaves dropping but, that was Tala wasn't it... He has news about Rei?"
The stone faced teen turned a smile to the boy and shrugged. "Yeah. He is back, but what difference does that make?"
"A big one... Is he ok? Do you know?"
"Tala was vague, but I think he's ok." The boy stood there, foot kicking the floor. "...Is there something else?"
"Kai... I don't make it a habit of telling people what to do but... Rei.... Don't follow him, whatever you do."
Smiling, he placed his hands on the boys shoulders. "Who told you that I intended to follow him home?" He held the boys face in his hands. "Hmm?"
Casting his gaze anywhere else, he stammered saying. "Just a hunch," shrugs with a sad face. "I just don't think it's a good idea for him to get all worked up."
"He'll be fine- more so- because I'm gonna offer him to stay with me and my family."
That shocked him. He relaxed a bit. "Oh... That's great then. Sorry for bothering you."
"Mmhm." He returned to sifting through his locker for the books he needs for his next two classes.
Brooklyn walked away, glancing back at the Russian as if to ask, will you really take care of him? But he trusted Kai, he's a good person from what he could tell so why worry. If he says he'll offer him a home, he'll do just that. But somewhere in the pit of his stomach he still felt sick.
* * *
Rei opened the door to his one room apartment, dropping his bag to the floor he walks into the bathroom and runs the water. A bath would be nice right about now, it will relax his muscles and calm him down so he can get back to sleep- a better sleep than the one he had last night. It was bad, really bad. It seemed they were only getting worse with each pill he took so he decided to stop taking them. With that he had been doing great, up until yesterday when his mind threw him a blow out mental party with all the terrifying perks. Shaking the bad thoughts away, he stripped off his clothes leaving them on the floor. He stepped into the tub and relaxed in the bit of hot water that lay in the bottom of the tub.
'It should have been you.' Whispered the female voice.
'Look at him. So frightened now that he's alone.' Says the male. 'He brought it on his self.'
The two laughed before their voices vanished in a whisp of air. Rei's eyes snap open, water landed on his face from nowhere. He hadn't noticed that he sank down into the tub- he could have drowned! He only hoped that it was an accident this time and not like before. Confused, he wondered when he had fallen asleep, and when he had turned off the water. The boy jumped out of his skin at the sound of a loud knock at his door. How long has that person been knocking that it sounds like they're at wits-end?
Getting out of the tub he grabs a big fluffy, white robe and wrapped himself in it. Entering the room he looked at the window shocked to see that it was becoming dark. 'How long...?' Looking at his destination he cleared his throat incase his voice was worn. "I told you that once five hits the door stays locked!"
"It's me, Rei." That sounds like Kai! "Please, can I come in."
Walking over to the door he undoes the locks then pulls it open. It is Kai! The Russian smiled, it looked odd on him, but Rei liked it. It had a shyness to it. "I brought pizza and a soda- I hope you like mushroom and grape."
Rei was speechless as the boy walked into his crappy apartment looking left then right. Closing the door, he turned the locks. Stepping back into the whole of the room, he took the box from Kai setting it down on the floor by a large futon bed that lay on the floor. There is a large, king-size blanket that covers it and two pillows lay at the top. Kai's eyes continued to trace the place from the tattered wallpaper to the broken blinds. The floor was carpeted but it looked dirty aside from that there was nothing... just... Rei.
Noticing the judging stares, he blushed more. "I'm re-decorating." He says lamely. Setting two plates down for them he sits on the bed and pats it. "Don't worry, I bought this from a store. How did you find me?" He had to know.
Sitting down, Kai sighs. "Some kid told Zeo, who told his Dad when Tala was over there." He wanted to wait before he said anything, show him that he was glad he thought he could take care of himself but this was too much. "Rei, I want you to come live with me- this place is no good for you."
"It's what I deserve." He replies taking a bite of pizza as though he never had food.
Kai couldn't imagine when was the last time the boy ate, or how much this dive cost. He saw a man in the hall walking a little girl who may or may not be his kid and it sickened and worried him, on the way in he heard screaming coming from the third floor- not to mention, the land lady was a bitch; it took a five hundred dollar bill over the desk to get her to talk at the sight of money she easily gave up the boys room number.
Taking a bite as well, he chews it trying to speak casually. No one ever said it was going to be easy. He just had to figure out a way to talk Rei down so that he would come with him. But he didn't know what to say. Maybe he could kidnap him, when he falls asleep and if he insist on staying in this hell hole than alright, but he would have him as a new roommate whether he liked it or not.
"Rei... Why do you think you deserve this?"
Putting down his third slice he sighs. "Because I lie. I lie about everything- who I am, what I want. It's been nothing but lies and I finally got caught. Consequences. This is what I deserve," he mutters to himself. "I should have never tried to be normal. I should have just let Miki put me in a home."
Kai didn't know whom this Miki is, but he didn't think he liked him or her if they planned on doing something like that to his friend. Reaching out a hand he rubs Rei's back, wrapping his arms around the boy when he leaned into it, Rei resting his head to his shoulder. Maybe now he would tell him what was this big secret he and Lee were hiding. He can understand- whatever it is.
"You really do love me, don't you, Kai?" It sounded almost as if he were laughing about that. But not in a sense of making fun of him, it was more like that of someone who has so many self doubts it was stifling them.
"More than anyone." He replied easily. "I was so worried when I found out you were missing I even had the maids who saw you out looking.... We all missed you at school too."
He laughs again. "School. Did you know I've been kicked out of advanced classes."
"Why?"
He shrugged. "I failed two test that I didn't even know I had taken or something like thumble-..." he shook his head. "Something like that." He said over carefully this time. He could tell that Kai was about to ask him a question so he cut him off by saying. "You know, you weren't doing any harm in trying to date me," a whisp of a laugh came out from that. "Turns out, Tyson wasn't really my boyfriend. He was just test driving a new relationship because he thinks I'm cute.... He's been with Max the whole time."
"I'm sorry-..."
Shaking his head, he says. "Don't be... I thought I was mad at him when I found out but actually, I was mad at myself because.... I could tell Tyson was hinting at breaking up with me, but I held on. I should have just kissed it off, then maybe we'd at least be friends."
"I think he'll always see you as a friend."
"I hope so." It was quiet for a bit. The orange glow from the bathroom light gave the room a candle light kind of look. Standing, he says. "I'm really happy for Tyson.... he talked about Max like he really loves him. I think I found that." Crossing the room, he goes into the bathroom to turn off the light. When he came out Kai caught his breath at the sight. Rei, naked, pale skin illuminated in the moonlight of the windows; the broken blinds casting shadows on him in stripes like a white tiger. He looked majestic and beautiful, Godly and untouchable in his approach.
"Rei I-..?"
"Ssshhh.... My mind gets fuzzy sometimes but I know I believe in this," he leans down to a kneel, hands coming to Kai's cheeks. The speechless Russian could hardly breathe looking at how the moonlight played with this boy, completely in love with his once golden eyes that now cast an emerald green. "You love me, and try as I might to trick myself I've been in love with you too." He pressed his lips softly to Kai's whispering. "Let me feel what you can't say, please."
Pressing the boy to the thin bed, he lay on top of the boy kissing him tenderly, mouth parted but no further than that until he felt Rei's shy tongue taste his lips letting him know he can do the same. He licked at the boys mouth: upper and lower lip, the corners, his teeth and inside. Shivers traced the boys back as his tongue located the pleasure spots in his tigers mouth, he thought his body would cave on him when Rei ground upward at him as his back arched from the mattress. The Chinese boy whispered Kai's name as he pulled the boys uniform jacket away and went for his shirt; Kai took care of his lower half.
The lower boys need became more apparent with the frantic movement of his hips when their skin touched. Their rising erections fought as their mouths decided the victor to be Rei who had brought his teeth into the kiss regardless the Russian's want to go slow. Kai nibbled his way down the boys chest, playing on his nipples with his tongue all the while his hands fumbled for his pants so he could take the small tube of lubricant from the pocket. When he kissed Rei on the lips and jaw, he raised the boys legs preparing him the second act. The heavy air lay on them, warming and holding them as the aroma of their bodies over powered the smell of sauce and cheese. It seemed as though the boy was ready to break just from the preparations; so lubing himself next Kai removed his fingers and advanced in, connecting them as close as two can be.
The two thrust the night away until they ended up in each others arms, under the blanket. Kissing now and then trying to fight sleep. Rei knew he couldn't hold his lie any longer, he had to tell Kai everything, if this would ever work out. He wouldn't let love slip from his life again. Looking up at the boy he says,
"I have to tell you something."
'Why did I come to school today?' Wonders the boy. 'I could barely get out of bed when I woke up, so naturally I agitate my muscles more by coming to school- It's what a Kon would do.' "You tripped me, that first week of school.
* * *
