Chapter~7: How It's Meant To Be

“...Starlit sky moon on high
sure feels good to me
in my bones I've always known
this is how it's meant to be...”

Notes: Beybalde STILL isn't mine and I NEVER want it to be. “You Wouldn't Know Love” isn't mine either and I have finally let out a defeated sigh and accpeted the fact that it never will be either, Michael Bolton doesn't do charity with his songs. I DO own a CD, so, in an odd sort of way I DO own the song, I just haven't gotten the rights. Too bad. “Save Me” ( a different one) is by Clout. This is the last chapter of them! No more pouting over my lack of rights! Thanks to anyone that is reading and I hope you like the ending! If anyone actually LIKES the way I write, would you mind just WRITING to me so that I know if I should post my other fics or just go and huddle in a corner and cry over my lack of skill? Read and decide my fate...

Kai opened the door at the entrance, a hot wave of air contrasting highly to the air conditioner from inside the small edifice, and gave a step outside, idly waiting for Leilani, who was only a few feet behind him. The younger brunette waved timidly at the official as she closed the door behind her.
She turned around to see where Kai was and noticed that the boy had already began walking towards the hotel room, hands still in his pockets. Leilani walked quickly to catch up with him and gave his face a slight glance. He held a sullen expression on his hard features and she figured he must be angry at her for all he went through on that day. Giving a defeated sigh, she decided to stare up at the sky while she walked, her elbow occasionally bumping with Kai's.
It was getting rather late, judging the position of the Sun and the sudden movement throughout the entire city, Leilani guessed it must be somewhere around six or seven o' clock.
Neither she nor Kai seemed to have much to say, so they remained silent throughout most of their walk. Somewhere along the way, Leilani began to let her insecurities return. She wondered if Kai was upset about what had happened. If he was regretting it and if he was mad at her for ever suggesting. It was stupid, she knew. If he had ever been dead-set against not doing it, he simply wouldn't have taken actions. Kai wasn't the kind to let himself be pushed around. And, while the shorter brunette found what the blunette had done romantic, he might find it degrading.
Yet, there was nothing she felt like saying, afraid her words might backfire on her. So, they walked in silence, Leilani enduring.
“I'm sorry,” she thought she heard Kai mumble suddenly, somewhere around halfway towards their hotel room.
She spun her head so quickly, her braid slapped her arm on the way. Her eyes tried desperately to read Kai's, but the other teen held his view frigidly in front, avoiding hers.
“For what?” she asked tentatively, resuming her earlier actions, simply staring at her feet as she walked, keeping her own eyes out of view and unreadable.
They could hear the rustle and bustle of people walking everywhere around them throughout that long, lingering moment of silence between them.
“For everything,” Kai replied, again a simple mutter. But, this time, he pulled a hand out of one of his pockets and intertwined his arm with hers at the elbow, gently tangling his fingers with hers at the end.
For a moment Leilani did little more than walk and breathe. That gesture was hers. SHE was the one that always hung to Kai's arm. SHE was always the one that came to HIM. And here Kai was, showing her how much he appreciated the displays of affection.
After a few seconds, the brunette became aware of the fact that the arm holding hers was extremely tense, the muscles there harder than usual against Leilani's skin and nearly vibrating from the strain of not being allowed to tremble. Kai was nervous! But, how could he be? He was afraid? Of what?
“I'm sorry for hurting you and for doing that stupid thing I did on the street,” he said frustratedly as he ran his free hand through his rumpled bangs.
He was afraid she was mad at him for that?!
“You can't possibly be serious,” she stated irritably, in a near snort at the thought.
Kai turned his head to watch her with wide eyes, then turned blank-faced and flatly answered, “I'm always serious.”
Leilani took that as a sort of ambiguous answer. He could be turning grim and saying it self-depricatively, which she didn't find all that weird. But he may also be referring to the fact that he didn't lie, therefor, his public demonstration hadn't been just a sort of display, it was purely loving.
Instead of answering with words, the brunette leaned closer to the older boy and pressed her cheek to his shoulder, squeezing his hand slightly with hers. She felt Kai tense at the action and quickly recompose, accepting her response.
They walked like that in silence for a few more minutes, until Leilani tired of it, saying simply, “silly.”
Kai raised an eyebrow at that, but figured that Leilani wouldn't see it in her current position. “Why?” he asked, already knowing she was referring to him.
Leilani remained pensive for a moment and finally responded, “I suggested it, didn't I?”
Kai hesitated, sure that he HAD been foolish in believing she would be mad at him, but it was better if he prepared himself for the worse in all situations. “Yes,” he finally muttered and, once again, fell silent.
Leilani sighed in contentment at how the day's events had evolved down to this. A thought that had been nagging at her during most of the day striked her once again.
Sure that things were back to normal, she decided to go ahead and voice out her thoughts to the boy next to her.
“Kai?”
“Hn?” She could have taken that as one of fifty-six different options, varying from “I don't give a damn,” to “interesting,” to “I screwed up” -something he would never admit, though-. Twelve years of deciphering the word led Leilani into knowing it meant he was listening. She could deal with the boy's “boisterous” manners later on.
“Why don't you ever eat sugar?” she asked tentatively. It had been on her mind for more than a few years, but, thinking it over, she had never seen the older boy consume even the least bit of any form of sweets.
Kai remained silent and, for a moment, Leilani once again thought he was just dismissing the subject.
“You won't laugh?” he asked hesitantly. The younger brunette gave his face a glance, an eyebrow sky-high. What was up with the guy this day? First, he's testy, then he's romantic and, now, hesitant? She studied the older blunette for a moment and finally became aware of the fact that his generally pale cheeks had taken a rather pinkish hue and it wasn't due to the weather.
“Why would I laugh?” the braided girl finally asked skeptically.
“Will you just say that you won't laugh?” Kai replied exasperatdly, his voice seemingly flustered. `This must be something that really nags him,' Leilani figured, about to just drop the subject. Instead, she found herself shaking her face from side to side no. There was something -namely, morbid curiosity- that attracted the girl into wanting to know what could trouble the commonly stoic boy in such a way. He was blushing, for God's sake!
The older boy gave a deep sigh and began, “you know, I'm embarrassed about this, so, if you dare tell, I'll kill you.” That was common in him. A dash of death threats were just the thing to keep the girl silent (as if...). He gave Leilani's face a serious glance, making sure she got the point. The younger girl, unperturbed by his admonitions, just nodded while she waited with wide eyes.
“...I get hyperactive...” he muttered sullenly.
“Say what?” Leilani asked incredulously. The almighty Kai Hiwatari couldn't possibly have just said that.
“Bitch...” he mumbled, earning himself an elbow in the ribs.
“You're kidding. Seriously? YOU get HYPER?!” she kept on inquiring, watching his face attentively to make sure he wasn't lying. “How do you know if you never eat any candy or stuff?”
“When I was a kid, it happened a few times. And, some time back, I tried some chocolate YOU gave me and got on a sugar high again. I woke up the next day in a ditch, surrounded by candy wrappings and I couln't remember a thing...” he admitted darkly. One glance at the top of Leilani's head was enough to know she was desperately trying to hold bavk her laughter.
The brunette was holding her side, pressing her lips and her nostrils were flaring. In any moment, she was going to explode.
“Laugh your head off,” Kai finally stated dryly as he glared at the girl that began to giggle like mad.
“I... never would have... thought that... you could... be hyper...” she managed to sputter out through fits of laughter that just seemed to make Kai angrier.
After her good five minutes of chortles, Leilani began to grasp her composure slightly, straightening up and drying off the tears that had formed in her eyes. “Awww... don't get mad, you just have to know, it's weird to think of you on a sugar high,” she stated soothingly as she rubbed his arm gently.
Kai just snorted at that, but both he and the younger brunette that still let out a small giggle every few seconds, knew that, inside, he was glad things were okay again...

“Where are Leilani and Kai?” Hillary asked as she stepped into the hotel room, accompanied by a pouting Daichi and a frowning Tyson.
“I think they broke up again,” Kenny replied, lifting his view from his laptop to give the older brunette a quick look, while adjusting his glasses.
“What?!” Hillary shouted louder than intended. How could that have happened when the couple had just reunited the day before? Leilani had forgiven Kai and Kai had asked for an apology. What had happened?
“They did NOT break up again,” Ray corrected, leaving the book he had been reading.
“Yes they did. I saw Leilani storm out of here today in the afternoon while I was in the lobby, trying to get a dial-up connection,” Kenny replied in his own geeky way.
“They had a fight, but, after Leilani left, Kai went to follow her, and I'm sure they're better now,” the longhaired Chinese boy responded calmly.
“What did they fight about this time?” Hillary asked, before Kenny could complain by saying that he hadn't seen Kai all day long. She went and took a seat on the couch, next to the shorthaired geek that resumed watching video-clips of that singer he loved so much.
Meanwhile, as usual, in the background, they could hear Tyson and Daichi fighting for the control remote.
Ray remained silent. He didn't want to tell anyone about it, besides he had gotten to a sort of agreement with Kai and the other boy was going to return to his girlfriend, so it didn't really matter. But, he also knew that lying simply wasn't his thing, so instead of just responding something of the likes of `I don't know', he simply said, “it doesn't matter.”
“Of course it does,” Hillary pressed.
“NO, it doesn't,” Ray insisted, getting up from the sofa and walking towards the door.
“Ray? Is there something wrong?” the young brunette asked, her voice gone from stern to concerned.
The older boy simply shrugged and said, “not anymore.” And, with that and a rueful, little smile, he opened the door and began to walk out.
“Ray! Where are you going? What's that supposed to mean?!” Hillary shouted as she stalked over to the doorway while the Chinese boy began to close it gently behind him.
“It means that things are okay now.”
“What things? Who are you talking about now?” Hillary continued to nag as she followed Ray down the corridors leading to the staircase.
“Everything. Leilani and Kai are okay now.”
“Ray?” the younger brunette asked softly as she grabbed a firm hold of his arm, stopping him in his tracks. “Are YOU okay?”
Ray took a moment to think that over. Was he okay? Leilani was going to be happy again, even if it wasn't with him. He had managed to save the already fragile friendship with Kai and now the older boy probably wasn't going to have such “green eyes” regarding his relationship with the other's girlfriend. And he was going to return to having the friendship he had with the girl. So, were things okay with him? Selfishness wasn't really his biggest issue. He was glad seeing other people glad. So, was he really okay? Yes, he was. He was happy for his friends and he was happy with himself for the selfless fact that he was happy for the couple. He would survive.
After a moment's thought, he gave a nod and smiled at Hillary. “I'm going to go walk for a while now, okay? Don't wait me up.”
Hillary nodded, not really sure what how she should interpret that answer. Ray seemed sincere. Why would he lie? She unclamped her arm from the older boy's and let him go as she gave steps back towards the hotel room.
Ray watched her leave, stuffing his hands in his pockets. He began to think over his decision. He actually DID feel fine. And he wasn't doing it to later bloat on about how selfless he had been. It was something he was FEELING and that made him feel good.
Before he knew it, he was already outside, the cool, summer night air, hitting his burning cheeks. The hotel seemed to be having an air-conditioning problem. Not that he cared.
Idly, he began to walk down the busy streets, watching the pale moon above him. And, inside, all he was thinking was, `I wish you joy...'

A.N.: This DEFINITELY wasn't my best chapter, but, honestly, I suck at endings. I actually was planning on finishing it in the scene in which Leilani and Kai had just finished sorting things out, but I wanted to lighten it up with the candy thing, something that has always been nagging at MY mind and I remembered Ray! I wasn't going to leave him just brooding and depressed because of everything. I like him, not as much as Kai, but enough to make me bother in ending his dillemas too. Anyhow, the ending sucks. I hate writing them, but I wanted to post SOMETHING and I hate it when my favorite writers just drop their fics and leave me hanging, so I finished it. Thanks for sticking `till the end. As I said at the beginning of the chapter, tell me how good or bad I write so I know if someone would actually read my fics if I posted them all. My address is Sapphyre3@hotmail.com, please write, and, hopefully, see you with another fic soon!
PS: How did Kai get through the lobby, butt-naked without Kenny even noticing? Well, “THAT'S a trade secret” as my favorite anime character would say. In this case meaning that not even I know. But, if it makes someone feel better, I'll say that Kenny was too busy watching his computer to care. Ok?
