Bleach Fan Fiction ❯ Academy ❯ Mentor ( Chapter 1 )

[ P - Pre-Teen ]
Kaoru slid Zimori onto her lap and buried her face in the living backpack's closely-woven nylon. Her headache was back with a vengeance, and there seemed to be no hope.
Today, just like any other, was a mixture of polar opposite cirumstances. On the Best side, the new invasion was keeping enough people away that the new rule of Court Gaurd level shinigami teaching academy classes had been made permanent. On the Worst side, her rice had spilled during first hour, Kala Gardner spat in her hair in third hour, and by the time fourth hour was over her headache was back, and she wanted to get permission to take out her Asauchi and slit her wrists. Tessai, the new Computer Science teacher, had said no. To top that off her mom's Winnie the Pooh jacket, one of the only things she had kept in Seireitei, was lost. Not lost, maybe. She knew she had left it in the Special Ed room when a teacher had been helping her organize Zimori. But basically, it had been a bad day. To top that off while she'd been searching for the jacket the buses had pulled up, and she'd run halfway down the 2-block campus before the new principal, Byakuya-sensei, had stopped her and told her he would call the bus. Captain Byakuya Kuchiki, the supposed bishie and most powerful shinigami at the academy, had to call the bus and tell them to wait. Mortifying. Plus, Kyoko didn't have the latest copy of Fruits Basket, which she'd promised to let Kaoru borrow. Yuck. On top of that today she was supposed to be assigned a mentor. A MENTOR!! As if her low status as a fangirl-cum-Soul Reaper wasn't bad enough. A mentor would make it glaringly obvious that she was so behind, a psychic monkey could fare better than her against a Hollow.
As she stepped off the tram a thought occurred to Kaoru. What if her mentor was...? No. She shook it off. She was only a rabid, drooly fangirl over one person, but surely...never in a million years...no. No.
She watched the captain of First Company pace slowly in front of her.
"Kaoru, I'm sure you're aware of why you have been called here....why is your hair wet? You washed it? Oh well. I'm sure you've noticed that you are exceptional with Kido but fail miserably at anything physical. This is why we have assigned you a mentor. He has taken time away from his job in the Companies to help you, so be respectful." The Companies? No, never. They'd never...
"He will be here shortly. Kneel, there, good. I'll be leaving now. Goodbye." He left and in a while the door opened. She was facing away from the door and didn't dare lift her head. She waited. And waited.
"Stand and turn around; I want to see your face." How she wished she didn't know that voice. Why would they do this? Why? Why would they torture a poor, innocent Shinigami like this? But there was no more delaying. She turned slowly, red as a beet she was sure, to face her new mentor...Renji Abarai.
