Ryuuken's office was officially closed for the night but I had no problem getting in. I never did, even when I was a little tipsy. Ryuuken's security sucked. Either that or he didn't want to be bothered explaining to the security guard why I was trying to break into his office. Again. I stood in the reception area, weaving just a little, and nodded in satisfaction at the sliver of light coming from under the door to his office. It was late but I knew he'd be here. I opened his door, careful not to trip over the fringe of the area rug this time. Ryuuken was at his desk and watched me walk towards him.
“You spill any of that sake on my rug and you're paying for the cleaning bill,” he said in a cold voice.
Sake? He had sake? Where? Oh. Right. I had the sake. I took another pull from the bottle and dropped into the leather chair in front of his desk. I wondered why everything felt like it was still moving when I knew I wasn't. Or, at least I was pretty sure I wasn't moving. Maybe I was a teensy bit drunker than I thought. Ryuuken shook his head and sighed.
“How much have you had to drink already?”
I took another drink from the bottle. “Some.”
“You're going to be hung-over tomorrow morning.”
I shrugged. Ryuuken sighed again. He opened a drawer in his desk, took out a bottle and two glasses and poured himself one from his bottle. I eyed his bottle. So that's where he hid the good stuff. Greedy bastard. He pushed the other, empty glass towards me.
“At least be a little civilized and drink it from a glass instead of straight from the bottle.”
Civilized. I nodded at Ryuuken. I could do civilized. Masaki'd trained me pretty good for polite society. She'd been a miracle worker, really. I poured sake into the glass, rather proud of myself when none spilled given the slight tremble in my hand. I raised my glass to Ryuuken and tossed the contents back in one gulp. Ryuuken sighed yet again. Damn that was annoying. Prissy bastard. A grin twitched my lips when I thought he was my prissy bastard. Well, mine and Kisuke's. I refilled my glass.
“Are you going to stay with Kisuke tonight or am I dragging your drunk ass to my house so you can sleep this off?” Ryuuken asked with a pointed look.
I looked at Ryuuken and tapped the side of my nose. I pointed at him with my glass, spilling only a little sake on the surface of his desk before tossing back what was left. The question was a formality. We both knew that if I was in his office on this particular day, I'd be going home with him and he'd be calling Kisuke to come over. A knock sounded on the door and I rolled my head against the back of the chair, wondering who'd be coming to see Ryuuken at this time of night. Kisuke wouldn't knock. He'd just walk right in.
“Ryuuken, I need…. Excuse me. I didn't know you had someone…” Uryuu froze a few steps into the office and stared at me.
“Can it wait, Uryuu? Kurosaki and I are discussing… business.”
“I… yes. Of course. Pardon the interruption. I'll wait until you come home to speak with you,” Uryuu said with a stiff little bow and turned to leave the office.
“Are you Ichigo's boyfriend?” I asked as I leaned forward in my seat. Ichigo wouldn't tell me no matter how hard I poked him but maybe Uryuu would.
“Isshin,” Ryuuken hissed at me under his breath. “You don't need to answer that, Uryuu.”
Uryuu blinked at me and pushed his glasses up his nose in a move that was very much like Ryuuken's when he was trying to gather his thoughts. Uryuu cleared his throat and sent a glance over to his father. His mouth firmed and I was struck again at how much Uryuu was like his father. I could see why Ichigo was attracted to Uryuu. They probably looked cute as hell together.
“We're just friends. That's all,” Uryuu said while looking at Ryuuken. Ryuuken narrowed his eyes but said nothing.
“Really? Damn. I thought you were. Too bad. Ichigo could probably use a friend today. Even if you just sat with him and watched TV or something, he'd probably feel better.”
Uryuu frowned at me and pushed his glasses up his nose again. “Why?”
“Today's the anniversary of Masaki's death. Didn't Ichigo tell you?” I asked before lifting my glass. I scowled at the empty glass, shrugged and brought the bottle to my lips, frowning when nothing but a few drops came out. Damn. I wasn't anywhere near as drunk as I wanted to be. I wondered if Ryuuken would part with that bottle of his. I could make it worth his while.
Uryuu sucked in a sharp breath making me jerk my gaze to him. He looked stricken and I wondered why. He'd never met Masaki and even if him and Ichigo were just friends, why would he look so upset? Had Ichigo honestly not said anything to Uryuu? I guess they really weren't boyfriends if Ichigo hadn't told him what day today was. Uryuu murmured condolences, a polite apology for interrupting us and hurried from the office.
“Did you know you're even more of an idiot when you're drunk, Isshin? What the hell possessed you to ask Uryuu if he was Ichigo's boyfriend? That was pretty damn rude and I'd have thought that even you would have a little better decorum than that. My god, Isshin, you practically outted my son. Do you have any idea how much more tense it'll make our conversations now? Remind me again why I bother putting up with you.”
“S'not a big deal, Ryuuken. So he likes cock,” I shrugged and eyed the bottle next to Ryuuken's elbow. Looked like it was still half-full. Sweet. “Be pretty fucking two-faced if you came down on him about that considering you have me and Kisuke as lovers. Hell, you're probably kinkier than he is for having two lovers at the same time.”
Ryuuken's mouth flattened into a tight line. “Oh shut up and drink the damn sake,” Ryuuken muttered as he pushed the bottle towards me.
I reached for the bottle but stopped before making contact. Ryuuken always refused to feed me alcohol when I was depressed over Masaki. He said she wouldn't have approved. He was right. Shit. I think I made him mad and the last thing I needed today was him mad at me. With the way the world was a little fuzzy around the edges, I'd possibly had enough to drink anyway. I stood, swaying slightly, and pressed my hands flat on his desk for support.
“I'm sorry for being a drunk jerk, Ryuuken. Pour me into bed and I swear I'll keep my big mouth shut as long as you stay with me. I need you and Kisuke tonight. I can't go home and sleep in that bed alone. Not tonight. Please,” I begged my voice cracking a little.
Ryuuken frowned at me and sighed. He pushed up his glasses, shook his head and stood as well, leaning forward until our faces were inches apart. This close, I could see his eyes clearly but couldn't quite read whatever was in his look. He was hard enough to figure out when I was stone cold sober. Drunk, I couldn't even buy a clue.
“You're an idiot, Isshin. Do you really think I'd send you home to the bed you shared with Masaki on the anniversary of the day she died? You know better.”
“But, I made you mad….”
“Frustrated and annoyed but not mad, Isshin. I'm sure you remember what I'm like when I'm angry with you. I'm going to call Kisuke and have him come get you and take you to his place. I need to see what Uryuu wanted and then, I'll come straight over to Kisuke's. Promise. We won't leave you alone tonight. Masaki would never forgive us,” Ryuuken said leaning those last few inches and kissing me softly on the lips.
Tension I hadn't been aware I was feeling seeped out of me. I gave Ryuuken a goofy smile and sat back down in the chair. If Ryuuken said him and Kisuke wouldn't leave me alone tonight, then they wouldn't. I closed my eyes and rested my head against the back of the chair. I heard Ryuuken talking softly to Kisuke and the words drunk, idiot and comfort peppered the conversation. I pried my eyes open when I felt a hand brush through my hair.
“What'll I do with you?” Ryuuken sighed softly.
I shrugged and caught his wrist, pressing my lips to his palm. “Love me like the big, dumb animal I am?”
Ryuuken snorted and kissed my forehead. He loosened my shirt collar and fussed around until Kisuke showed up. Ryuuken followed us to the door and promised he'd come to Kisuke's place as soon as he'd taken care of whatever Uryuu needed. I smiled as I leaned on Kisuke for support.
Masaki had liked Kisuke and Ryuuken and knew the sacrifice they'd made so I could be with her even though she'd never asked me to make that choice. From the moment I met her, I knew I was destined to love her. I told her that, too. She'd smiled softly at me and made me promise that I'd try and be happy when the time came that she wasn't around anymore. I wondered if she'd known something about how much time we'd have together. I know I'd been luckier than I should've been to have found her and had her love.
Kisuke slung my arm over his shoulder and wrapped his around my waist, supporting me. I leaned heavily on him and let him guide me from Ryuuken's office. Masaki was gone but not forgotten by me or my lovers. I'd lost her before I was ready to but, I still had them to shelter me.
