Trust
Abruptly the man released her and she was both relieved and confused. It wasn't her father, because he never let her go, even when she begged and bargained. She'd known it wasn't her father but the dream had mixed everything up and it was difficult to strip away the reality from the other things playing on her mind. Slowly she remembered where she was and that her father could not reach her. Again she felt relieved but horrified. Aizen could return and rape her at any time and she was uncertain if any of her three lovers would do anything to protect her. How could she trust them? She didn't know them.
Opening her eyes she looked at the man and tried to estimate what he intended to do. Unlike the others she had encountered he had not tried to have sex with her immediately and instead tried to soothe her. It could be a set up by Aizen so that she would trust this man and when she was again vulnerable he would use the situation to torture her further. Why would any of the traitors want to help her or try to befriend her?
“What do you want?” She did not try to hide the distrust in her voice and she tried to hold his gaze. He seemed to meet her gaze, but the visor he wore obscured his eyes and made it difficult to see his expression.
The man's features didn't change and he paused before replying. “I want to talk to you.”
He'd said that before as well as saying something about protecting her and that he wouldn't harm her. Watching him warily she noticed his ability to remain still and outwardly calm while she pondered his words. Unlike the others his hands were not on her body but she couldn't tell where his eyes were looking.
“I thought you were blind.” The words were out of her mouth before she could prevent them.
His next action was unexpected. Reaching up he removed his visor and she could see his eyes, white, without pupils that seemed to gaze in her direction. “I am blind. The visor provides me with a limited vision.”
It was hard for Orihime to understand his action. “Why did you show me? You could have told me?”
“Would you have believed me? Since you have been here how many people have been honest with you? To establish a friendship there needs to be trust and I will not lie to you.”
He placed the visor in her hand and motioned to her face. “Try it if you wish. Then you will see as I see.”
Feeling trapped by the request she did so. The images she saw were black and white, fuzzy, without the fine detail she was used to. Quickly she replaced the visor in his hand. “Thanks.” The situation was out of her experience but it seemed she had to acknowledge that he has shared something with her.
As the visor covered his eyes a small smile quirked his lips. “If you had been blind from birth you would treasure any sight you were granted. You are a very beautiful young lady.”
Immediately she was on the defensive. The mere mention of her looks was enough to warn her that his proposed friendship might not be purely platonic. As she already had three lovers and one rapist, she didn't want to be the object of another man's desires. It was either that or he was flattering her and she couldn't trust him. Suddenly it dawned on her why the man was talking to her, trying to gain her trust and offering friendship. He was blind! He'd witnessed, or at least heard about her ability and knew that she restored Grimmjow's arm.
“What do you want?”
The man shook his head. “I want to talk to you, that is all.”
Orihime shut her eyes and then opened them and spoke clearly. “You want me to fix you, heal you.”
The spread of hope across the face could not be feigned, but it quickly vanished followed by a reluctant acceptance. “No. Captain Unohana tried everything. She assured me that nothing could be done.”
For a moment Orihime allowed herself to believe his words but all her instincts told her not to trust this man. “I'm not Captain Unohana. If I restore your sight will you help me escape?”
“No.”
There was no hesitation in his answer and it shocked her. If everything she believed about Tosen was true then he would have agreed immediately and it would have only proved that she couldn't trust him.
“I cannot. Aizen is too interested in you. All I can offer is to assist your friends if they arrive. This I offer, freely.”
Biting her lips she wondered what to do.
“If you fix my sight Sosuke will notice. That would be bad for both of us.”
The more she spoke with this stranger; she began to notice something different. As far as she could tell he hadn't lied to her or asked her for anything. “If we are to talk, should I call you Mr Tosen or Captain Tosen?”
Shaking his head he smiled gently. “No, please don't. Call me Kaname.”
“Kaname. Why do you want to talk to me?”
“Tell me about your dreams.”
Of all the topics that was unexpected and unwelcome. Talking about nightmares would only make them seem real. “They're bad,” she answered shortly.
“Obviously, but if you share a bad dream, sometimes it becomes less harsh.”
It seemed to make sense. In her situation did she have anything more to lose? “I was dreaming about my father…” Even admitting that made tears trickle down her cheeks as the vivid images replayed through her mind.
Thr door slammed open to reveal Aizen framed in the doorway, a cruel smile on his face. Looking at Orihime he nodded approvingly as he spoke in a low croon. “Baby, don't cry. Daddy's home.”
