Chapter 11

“His magic is stronger than we expected.”
“Did you see how Yue…”
“Yes. I believe there is some connection between those two…”
“We shall have to wait and see….”
“I suppose that this makes life more interesting, after all. I thought Sakura was going to change Fly, but apparently not…”

The Time, the Dash, and the Sword… he studied the three cards laid out on his desk fondly. Time was an old faithful ally of his…
Perhaps he'd find Return and the others again someday…
And a sudden solution to their problem presented itself. He slapped his forehead mentally - why had he not considered it earlier? But it was brilliant!
That way, there would be no squabbling over the cards…

“Well, I can't believe the gaki actually has a brain for once.” Kero-chan murmured as they met at his apartment.
“Kero-chan!”
Tomoyo had her camera ready, and to Syaoran's horror, a costume for him as well as for Sakura.
“I still have your measurements from the Sleeping Beauty play we did, and since you're wearing something besides those green robes all the time, I made you something.”
He wasn't sure whether he should be grateful f or horrified. He had seen Tomoyo's odd taste in costumes before, but…
As it went, this one looked simple enough, a sky blue jacket Chinese style and pants. Not the best color on him, but not horribly ugly either.
“Now.” Kero-chan instructed, drawing out the twin card, “You will both attempt to change this card. If all goes well, Twin will manage to duplicate the rest of the Clow cards…”
“What if something unexpected happens?”
“We'll deal with it later.”
“Ready?” Syaoran asked Sakura, as she gripped her star staff tightly.
“Ready.” Sakura answered in response. “Let's try this.”
Immediately, two magic circles flared up beneath their feet. Sakura was touching the card, and pink energy was inching up its body, but it was flashing green, while Syaoran poured his magic in through his link with the cards…
For many minutes the flashes went on, while Tomoyo and Kero-chan watched anxiously. Finally, finally, the light cleared.
They're resting on the floor, were two cards, one pink, one green. Each had the same words written on it.
The twin.

“It worked?” Sakura asked, dazed. Changing cards still took a lot out of her. Syaoran held out his hand and the green card flew to him.
“I guess it did…” He said, sounding ready to pass out. Tomoyo quit filming and turned to Syaoran.
“I'll make you both something to eat.”
“Thank you, Daidouji-san.” Syaoran said, closing his eyes.
Kero-chan followed Tomoyo to the kitchen and began opening drawers. “Hey, all these are filled with chocolate! Oh, yum…”
Tomoyo laughed as she watched the guardian stuff his face with chocolate. Opening the refrigerator, she found the remains of several take-out meals, milk, some fruit, and a slice of raspberry tart. Interesting.
Syaoran must have been too tired to cook.
Well, there was nothing to be done. If she wanted a filling meal she would have to buy groceries. The two didn't seem like they would be going anywhere, and Kero-chan was still busy helping himself to Syaoran's chocolate collection so she slipped outside and went shopping.
Half an hour later, she placed rice, pickled vegetables, and chicken teriyaki before both of the card… masters, she supposed.
“Arigato Tomoyo-chan!” Sakura said, as she began eating. Syaoran nodded his thanks and did the same.
Odd…. He really should not be that tired, Twin was not a particularly difficult card to deal with, and he certainly was not faking his tiredness.
Perhaps it was part of the aftereffect of changing Time last night?
Perhaps…

After the meal had been concluded, Tomoyo and Sakura and the stuffed animal left his apartments, and he returned to his bedroom to catch up on his Japanese assignment.
A dark forest-green and silver-wrought book lay on his desk, with Xiao Lang written on the cover. Flipping it open, he found seven cards inside.
… Seven cards?
He began counting. He was sure he'd only changed four… had he gotten Sakura's by accident, perhaps? But no, these were green…
There…. Sword, Dash, Time, Twin… he picked up the next three cards gingerly.
Freeze. Storm. Return.
< How? > He queried in bafflement.
We came when you called us, Master Syaoran.
We have always been yours…
You didn't notice, but we were with you when you called upon our brother, and so, we felt the change and underwent the transformation as well…
So that was it… no wonder he had been so tired upon changing Twin…

Well, no matter. He was happy now… the seven glittered like stars in a dark night… and he was happy.
Thank you….

“This was unexpected.”
“It was rather daring of them, to attempt a ceremony to duplicate the Clow cards…”
“Not so. They are practically ordinary pieces of paper now.”
“Still, they serve as a base upon which to build a new card.”
“True.” A pause. “I have a bad feeling about this…”
“So do I… what role does Syaoran play in this all?”
“I wish I knew…”

He was dreaming….
He stood upon a grassy hill, alone… all around men were dying, dropping like flies. Why? What was going on?
This scene of carnage and devastation could bode no well…
Where was Yue?
A woman… a woman was taunting him…
Syaoran gasped as he woke. Was it another prophetic dream? He froze as his hand encountered something underneath his shirt.
No… it couldn't be…
The Dream card stared up at him. A warning? A sign? He wished he knew… he watched as Dream flew to the book to join the others.
A glance at his watch showed 3 A.M. with a sigh, he returned to sleep.
