Chapter 10
“Gaki! Oi! Open up!” Kero-chan yelled. There was a soft click as the door unlocked and a very sleepy-looking Li Syaoran opened the door.
“What do you want?” He asked.
“I need to talk to Yue. He's here, isn't he? I felt his aura.” Cerberus said without preamble. “And I need to talk to you as well.”
“Mm… Yue already explained everything…” Syaoran replied, but let them in. He walked to the couch and promptly collapsed, ready to fall asleep again.
Yue was sipping from a cup of tea, and looked up as the group entered.
“So you told him? He does have the Sword card?” Kero-chan demanded.
Yue nodded in reply.
“Well… what are we going to do? Sword obviously chose him…” Kero-chan sighed. * Is it too much to ask that Sakura becomes Card Mistress peacefully? Even after the Final Judgment this brat is still causing trouble!”
“Li-kun, are you all right?” Sakura asked him.
“Just sleepy…” Syaoran replied. He really did look drained and exhausted. But it made sense, Kero-chan decided. After all, his magic was much, much weaker than Sakura's, so he'd probably be out of the way for another day or so.
“He's fallen asleep.” Tomoyo commented.
“What?” Kero-chan shrugged. “Oh well. Yue can keep an eye on him. We'll be going now.”
Sakura nodded, but she couldn't repress a sudden feeling of… jealousy, as Yue picked Syaoran up and carried him into his bedroom.
No… Yue wasn't Yukito… and she didn't have a crush on Yue, did she? She didn't' think so…
Maybe she was just too tired to think straight….
< Are you sure this is all right with you? >
Yue frowned as he smoothed the pillow and blankets. < What do you mean, Syaoran? >
< The cards belong to Sakura, so I shouldn't be changing them… and you didn't tell the stuffed animal that my magic level is actually higher than Sakura's… it only seems low since you took some of mine… >
< I think that by now we both know that Clow was the one who intended for Sakura to receive the cards not I? However, now that he is dead, I would rather not be bound to destiny any longer. I choose what my path shall be. >
< She's still the Card Mistress… >
< For now. > Yue said cryptically. < Now sleep. >
< Don't want to. > Syaoran pouted, surprised at his own boldness.
< Oh? > The moon guardian smiled. < It matters not. >
< I have one more question… if you're here… >
< Yukito took the day off from school. I made sure of that. >
< Then everything is okay. > His eyes closed, and despite his earlier protests, he fell asleep…
The next few days passed normally enough. There were no strange auras and no strange events, and aside from the fact that Eriol seemed to be flirting with him, which was creepy, Syaoran was happy.
Also, he had finally finished his teddy bear. He had stayed up several nights stitching, but it was worth it. Now, the pure white bear with black button eyes was ready to meet his new owner…
“You wanted to talk to me, Li-kun?” Yukito asked in surprise. The boy had been walking by the fence that separated the high school from the elementary school, with a bag in his hands.
“Yes, I did.” Syaoran ignored the butterflies in his stomach. He knew Yue saw whatever Yukito saw, so it didn't matter, but… he held out the bag. “This is a present for you, Yukito-san.”
Yukito looked slightly puzzled. It wasn't Valentine's or Christmas or his birthday, but…. With a smile, he accepted the bag and opened it.
A beautiful little white teddy bear that almost seemed to glow was exposed.
“I hope you like it.” Syaoran whispered shyly.
“It's very cute, Li-kun. Did you make it yourself?” Syaoran nodded shyly.
“Thank you very much.” Yukito smiled. “I'll cherish it.” Just then, the bell rang, signaling the end of the lunch period, so Syaoran ran off to class.
He didn't notice the eyes watching…
That night, Sakura stood outside Yukito's house nervously, her completed teddy bear in her hands. Tomoyo-chan followed, camera in hand as she rang the doorbell.
Yukito answered, and was quite surprised when Sakura offered him a stuffed bear, this one honey-colored. Was there some class project the children were doing that involved making teddy bears?
Still, it was quite adorable…
However, before he could do more, the bear suddenly…changed…
Syaoran sat bolt upright in his room. Yue had just transformed. True, it could be nothing, but… he didn't believe in coincidence. Clow's aura could be felt quite clearly… closing his eyes, he bolted out the door and began running to Yukito's house…
Sakura screamed as the bear turned into a giant moving stuffed animal and swung at her. Yue grabbed his mistress and took to the air, a barrage of crystals heading for the bear, but…
An invisible shield absorbed his attack before it could hit.
Something was not right…. And then there was a terrible, terrible jerking pain in his back and his wings were gone, and he barely had time to tuck himself around Sakura to protect her before they started falling…
The horrible certainty that he would not make it in time pierced Syaoran's heart as he stumbled. That pain…
How could he feel Yue - never mind for now, he needed to get there fast.
< Dash! Please lend me your power… >
Of course… the barest hint of a whisper, and then he was at Yukito's house, and as he stared he watched Yue and Sakura falling…
They were so high in the air, if they fell now…!
“Float!” Sakura called in desperation. She sighed in relief as the card underwent transformation into a Sakura card and they floated softly down to the surface. However, the bear was still rampaging…
“Shield!”
A blue dome of energy went up around the assembled group. Kero-chan had transformed into Cerberus to protect Tomoyo sometime during the melee…
How were they to defeat this bear?
< Yue? >
< There ought to be something controlling this bear. If you find and destroy the source of magic, that will stop its attacks. > The shield was holding up, but Yukito's house was taking a beating…
Syaoran nodded. “Sword!” Instantly, his sword changed into the sword card. Stepping out of the safety of Shield, he sliced the air in a series of fancy movements. Kero-chan scoffed, and then stared as the Bear lost its arms and legs.
“No, none of those…” Syaoran muttered. At least now the bear couldn't move much. Then… it had to be the head.
Dash enabled him to move faster then ever, and he leapt onto the fallen bear, sinking his sword right between its eyes. With a groan, the bear shuddered, and then… shrank back into a ruined teddy bear.
“…” Cerberus looked at Yue sideways. “Have you been training him?”
“No.” Yue said truthfully.
“Sakura-chan's fallen asleep again.” Tomoyo spoke up. That effectively distracted the guardian.
“Put her on my back, I'll carry her home. You two clean up this mess.”
After the guardian of the sun had taken off, Syaoran turned to Yue. “May I?”
Yue smiled. “You have no need to ask my permission, Syaoran.”
“Time! Return this teddy bear and house to the state they should be in!” The card shifted, glowing greenly as it became a `Syaoran card', before the ruined house was back to normal, and so was the teddy bear.
Syaoran staggered forwards, eyes glazing over. Time took a lot of energy to use, and after he had changed it into a card already…!
Yue scooped him up and smiled. “You did well, Syaoran…”
He slept in the guardian's arms that night.
