False Face, Hidden Heart: Chapter Six
Eriol groaned as sharp pain shot up his back. Opening his eyes groggily he stared at the drip in his arm blankly. What happened? All he remembered was searing pain all over him. Now he was in a hospital…why?
Pointlessly he pondered where Tomoyo was. Just then the door opened and he looked up expecting the violet haired nurse to be there. Instead some other woman, much taller than Tomoyo and with sweeping brown hair came in…Kaho her nametag said. Who the hell was she?
'Who the hell are you?'
Kaho merely smiled at him,
'Your nurse of course.'
Eriol scowled and struggled up despite the immense pain spreading up his back as he did so. He glared at Kaho, so like Tomoyo but so different.
'Where's Tomoyo?'
'The black haired nurse? She's resigned.'
Eriol bit his lip to refrain from correcting the woman, Tomoyo was violet haired dammit, violet! Then the finality of it struck him. She resigned? She…how could she? What type of nurse was Tomoyo anyway!? Reverting into his habit of hiding emotions he merely blinked and asked,
'Why?'
Kaho smiled at him again.
'She said she was helpless and unprepared.'
Eriol blinked. Huh? He didn't care weather she was helpless or not, she could be crippled for all he cared, she was his nurse! She wasn't supposed to resign! God he could laugh, only a week ago he would have given anything to make this happen. Now he would give anything to have Tomoyo here to berate him, tease him or bicker with him.
However instead of laughter, Eriol did the only thing he could do in a situation like this.
Burst into hysterical tears.
Kaho sat on the bed next to him and offered him a tissue. He took it without a word, what had gotten into him? Hiiragazawa Eriol did not cry. It just wasn't natural. Pulling his knees up to his chest, ignoring the insane amount of pain coursing through him he sobbed. Kaho patted his back being careful to avoid the burns Eriol had received from his rather hot shower.
'You love her, don't you?'
'What?'
Eriol's head shot up looked at her like she was stupid. He immediately ducked his head again, the height change had made him feel nauseous and dizzy. Ouch…itai[1]…Turning blue eyes at her, Eriol glared for all he was worth, hoping to burn a hole through her head. How could she think that? Let alone even say it.
Kaho laughed, amused,
'You love her yet you do not know it.'
If looks could kill, Kaho would be dead three times over by now.
'Either that or you are merely denying yourself, and therefore Tomoyo as well.'
Kaho stood from her seat and bustled around cleaning his already clean room.
'You know, there's no point in cleaning up, I haven't exactly had the energy to do much in the way of messing up the room.'
She replied with a smile, could that woman just not smile! She made even Eriol feel on edge,
'You're right but it's my job to fuss over any germ that might be of harm to you.'
'That's not funny.'
'No, but it's true.'
She could definitely tease him like Tomoyo did, except Tomoyo had a slightly crueller sense of humour in the way of pranks. Eriol almost smiled at the memory, He refrained, Kaho smiled enough to cover for him already. She was nice, he'd give her that.
'You don't have to feel guilty you know, for all those nurses and doctors. You scared them I'll admit, it was only after you left each hospital successively that the Doctors figured out your game.'
Eriol nearly fell out of bed.
'What? How did you know?'
He was suddenly very suspicious and very wary of the nurse who seemed happily oblivious to his abruptly more hostile attitude. She continued, fluffing up several cushions,
'All of them, the doctors, Kero-San, Spinal-San…even the nurses, Nakaru and the others forgave you.'
'Why are you telling me this.'
'As a favour to them.'
'Who are you?'
'…Kaho.'
Eriol would have continued with his interrogation but Kaho had straightened up from her pillow fluffing and headed out the door.
'Who are you doing this for?'
'Do you remember your other doctor?'
Eriol frowned, trying to recall names,
'Yue-san.'
'Yes, him. He says he will beat you at your own game, but he will also find you happiness in the process.'
Eriol smirked, Yue, his most recent Doctor until Tomoyo…who was actually nurse but nevermind. The man had been most intriguing, very clever. Eriol had had to work extra hard to defeat him in his game. Closing the door behind her, Kaho said in way of good bye,
'Think about what I said Eriol. About Tomoyo, I know what I am talking about.'
And that was Eriol realised he had fallen for Tomoyo.
Fallen hard.
