Chapter Ocho
........................................................
u> Sarah bent forward and picked up a sign that had fallen down.
"Just like I thought," she announced. "This is the area that just so happens to be filled with lions, tigers, and bears!"
"Oh, my!" exclaimed Sakura. "I hope we don't run into any of them!"
"Yeah, that'd be pretty bad," agreed Chris. It was then that the group of five heard and turned toward a rustling bush just as a figure jumped out of it.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!" screamed Sarah.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!" yelled Syaoran.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!" screamed Sakura.
"AAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!" yelled Chris.
"WWWWHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!" cried Puck for the site before them was so horrendous, it almost rivaled that of the Dark and Evil One. A hollow, almost completely skeletal face peered at them with bloodshot eyes and foam drooling from its mouth. The body was horribly disfigured and disgusting to the eyes and nose for the body odor was quite offensive. The arms were completely skeletal from the elbows down and the discolored skin hung off them in thin strings. Around the creature's neck hung a block of wood with the words "My name is Harold" engraved in it. Chris wasted no time in scooping up Sarah and taking off at a lightning speed. Syaoran soon followed suit with Sakura and Puck simply ran after them with Harold right on their trail.
"Come back!" Harold yelled in a very raspy, coarse, scratchy voice. "I have something for you from my master!"
"Whatever it is, WE DON'T WANT IT!" yelled Sakura over Syaoran's shoulder as the group picked up their speed so as to get away from the awful site and stench that was Harold. Unfortunately, Harold chose that time to pick up his speed as well.
"WAH! HE'S GAINING ON US!" wailed Sarah almost piteously.
------------------------------------------------------
T he three males were panting for breath and the two girls were making sure Harold hadn't found their imprompu hideout. Every member of the five-some was shaking both inwardly and outwardly with keenly felt fear.
"I wonder what he wanted to give us..." voiced Sarah after about twenty minutes of calming down.
"Really?" asked Puck. "'Cause I don't even wanna know!"
"I agree!" said Chris. "Whatever it was, if it was from his master, it couldn't have been anything good!" Syaoran nodded his agreement.
"Still, it does make one curious," said Sakura. Sarah nodded vigorously. "I mean, he did chase after us for about five hours without stopping to rest..." Again, Sarah nodded affirmatively and vigorously.
"At any rate," said Syaoran once he had finally gained his breath enough to speak, "we're going to have to camp here tonight because, let's face it, the sun's already setting! We only have nineteen days left!" The rest quickly grew somberly reflective on how fruitless that day's journey and unscheduled bit of exercise had been.

"Harold, you blunderhead!" erupted the Dark and Evil One. "How dare you return without giving Sarah my gift?!" Harold gulped nervously.
"If you please, Master, I think they were frightened by my appearance and smell. Humans seem to always let little things like that get to them, you know."
"I care not for your excuses!" he roared. "You will get that necklace around Sarah's neck or you'll soon be loosing yours!"
"My necklace?"
"No, stupid! YOUR NECK!" Harold quickly backed away.
"I will not fail you this time, Master!"
"See that you don't!"

Morning had come and the group of five set out once again. They had only walked about a mile when Sarah saw something glistening on the ground. Upon closer inspection, she discovered that it was a beautiful crystal necklace with a gold and silver chain.
"Pretty..." she breathed before bending down to pick up the gorgeous treasure. Just before she could pick it up, however, strong arms gently lifted her up.
"Something tells me that necklace being on the ground wasn't an accident." Sarah blinked and turned around to face Chris.
"Huh? Oh! The Evil Dude's gift! Right! Sorry...Just that it was so beautiful glistening in the sun like that...I just wanted to try it on...Please? Please let me try it on! I'll take it right off, I promise!" The others stared at her as she begged and pleaded with Chris to let her try on the pretty necklace. Finally, Chris won the argument and he gently led Sarah past the beautiful temptation. Sarah couldn't help but sulk a little as they continued their journey out of the forest.
"But it was so pretty! How could anything so beautiful possibly be evil?" demanded Sarah.
"Because looks can be deceiving. Remember?" reminded Syaoran.
"I guess..." Sarah reluctantly agreed. "But...still!"
"'But' nothing!" said Puck. "That necklace is anything but good!" Sarah knew better than to appeal to Chris--he was the one who stopped her in the first place! And Sakura was agreeing too avidly with her boyfriend to listen to Sarah's plead. The frustrated author blew air up at her bangs and grudgingly continued to search for the exit with her friends.

"Well, at least she saw the necklace!" Harold defended of himself. His master's back was turned to him and so he could not tell if the Dark One was angry or not.
"Not. Good. Enough!" came the thundering voice his master used when extremely angry and/or stressed. "I want it on her, not simply seen by her!"
"Y-yes M-m-master," stuttered Harold. "I shall do better next time." His master abrubtly turned to face him.
"NO! You've had too many chances already! I grow tired of you!" With a flick of his wrist, the Evil One sent a bronze knife into the heart of his faithful minion. "NIGHTKNIFE!" NightKnife quickly appeared before her master.
"Yes, my Master?"
"I trust you already know what to do?"
"Yes, my Master. I will not fail you."
"Good. Now go!"
