5. Vaine
The first summer. It was the first summer in the young life of Clow's guardians. Cerberus was taking a nap in the warm sun. Meanwhile, Yue was seeming not so confident. He stood there, watching his master, who had fallen asleep in the shadow of a tree, besides him the book he was studying before. Yue sighed. He knew he would get into a bad struggle if he dared waking up his "brother" and he not even dared thinking about waking up his master, as long as he wasn't urged to do so. So he just stood there, his gaze wandering from one sleeping form to another. Suddenly, a light breeze brushed through his silver strands and made them wave lightly up and down. Then, another breeze. Yue found it very enjoyable to feel the light chill rush all over his body. Some more breezes came up and died down again. And then, one of those breezes carried a sound to his ears. A silent, but existing sound. A faint piece of a melody. Yue listened up, but the breeze had already died down and the sound was gone. He waited for the next breeze. And again, he heard a fragment of sound, something that was coming from somewhere some miles away from where Yue was. Yue waited some more, listening carefully to two or three more of those sound fragments, and was finally able to figure out from which direction they were coming. He thought for a second, not quite sure if he should follow the sounds or not. Again, he looked at his master and his "brother".
Yue flew for some minutes, constantly listening if the sounds were still there. They led him like a path, becoming clearer with each inch he flew. After some time, Yue reached a clearing with a small, shimmering lake. And there, he could finally see and hear what the source of those sounds was. On a rock at the shore of the lake sat a young woman and sang a song. She was slim and her hair was dark red. She had shut her eyes and seemed to be fully concentrated on the words of the song she was singing. Yue couldn't resist to take a step nearer and watch her while she sang. He considered that woman as very pretty, what may have been the result of the fact Yue had never seen a woman before. He knew how a woman looked, and there were some of the cards that had a feminine appearance, but a real-life woman was something different. Yue watched her silently, listening to the words coming from her deep red lips:
Oh, some day, I may find what I desire.
Some day, I may find love.
It burns inside, that eternal fire,
For you, who was sent from above.
Oh, some day, you may come to me.
Some day, you will be mine.
I am right here, can't you see?
Just give me a sign.
There, the song ended. The woman looked up and opened her eyes. Yue looked into the most beautiful eyes he had ever seen. Dark purple and shimmering. He froze.
"Oh, hello there.", the woman said in a voice that was sweet and calm, "I didn't recognize I had audience." She smiled at Yue and walked towards him. Yue still couldn't move, he was too fascinated by the beauty of that woman.
"That song was beautiful.", he finally managed to say, not moving his eyes away from hers.
"Thank you.", She replied and smiled, "I just made it up myself. I am very pleased that you liked it. What's your name?"
"Yue.", he answered stiffly.
"Nice to meet you, Yue.", she took his right hand into hers, "I am Vaine."
"Do you live here?", Yue asked.
"Not exactly.", Vaine replied, "I live everywhere and nowhere, I have no real home, I just wander around and sleep where I like. I am something like a nomad. That's how I came here. I like this place here very much, it is solemn."
"I see.", Yue said.
"What about you?", Vaine asked, "Where do you live?"
"I am living with my master, his mansion is a few minutes away from here."
"Your master?", Vaine said, "You don't look like a slave."
"I am not a slave.", Yue replied, "I am more a servant to the man that created me."
"Created you?", Vaine repeated, "So you are not a human?"
"Yes.", Yue answered, "I am a creature of magic."
"So that's why you look like an angel.", Vaine stated.
"I am not an angel.", Yue said.
"But you surely look like one.", Vaine replied.
"My master determined my appearance as he created me.", Yue spoke, "If you wonder about how I look, you should talk to him, not me."
"Oh, please don't misunderstand me.", Vaine said, "I Like how you look. You are pretty."
"Thanks.", Yue spoke, "I think I should better return to my master now. I don't want him to worry about me."
"You really need to leave already?", Vaine asked with a sad look that, according to Yue, made her look really adorable. "You think we could meet again? I really enjoyed your companionship."
"I don't know.", Yue answered, "But maybe it would be possible for me to come here again tomorrow."
"That would be great!", Vaine exclaimed, "I will be waiting for you."
"Ok, if that's what you wish.", Yue said.
"Yes, goodbye, Yue.", Vaine smiled at him.
"Goodbye, Vaine.", Yue said and started flying back to Clow's mansion.
As he came back, he found his master and Cerberus still peacefully asleep. But as soon as he landed, Clow woke up from his sleep and looked at his guardian.
"Yue?", he asked with a sleepy voice.
"Yes, master?", Yue asked back.
"Where have you been?", came a question from the magician.
"What?", Yue was surprised that his master knew he had been away.
"I could feel you leaving and returning ,I am never totally absent from the world, Yue."
"I am sorry for leaving without your permission, master.", Yue excused himself.
"You don't have to apologize.", Clow said calmly, "Just tell me where you went to."
"The forest over there.", Yue stated and pointed into the direction he had come from.
"And why did you go there?", his master asked.
"I heard something and I wanted to know where it came from.", Yue answered.
"So?", Clow said, standing up to be face to face with his guardian.
"So what, master?", Yue asked back, not quite sure what the magician wanted.
"Where did it come from?", Clow asked and smiled, that smile Yue was so familiar with.
"It came from the forest.", Yue answered, "It was some woman singing a song."
"A woman?"
"Yes, master."
"How did she look?"
"Dark red hair, deep red lips, a red gown, slim and dark purple eyes."
"I have never seen someone like that around here before."
"She said she just arrived here and that she was something like a nomad."
"So you had a talk with her?"
"Yes, master."
"What else did she say?"
"That she wanted to meet me again."
"And? Did you agree?"
"Yes, master."
"That's nice, you really need a friend, Yue."
"I wouldn't say that we are friends. But that woman is very nice and pretty."
"Yue, are you blushing?"
"No, I don't think so, master."
Clow giggled.
"What's so funny, master?"
"Oh, nothing, Yue, nothing.", Clow answered and smiled broadly, "Just tell me, my dear Yue, what is the name of that woman. I want to at least know the name of the person that is able to touch your heart like that."
Yue was a bit stunned.
"Her name is Vaine, master", he then said.
"Vaine…", Clow repeated like tasting the name, "I should remember that name in any case."
The next day came quickly. To Yue, it seemed as if the last day just repeated itself, because he was looking at the same picture of two sleeping forms again. He hadn't told Clow when he was going to meet with Vaine again. Clow hadn't asked. He took a last look at his master, wondering if he felt him leaving again. He bent down gently and brought his lips to Clow's left ear.
"I will soon be back, master.", he whispered and then arched up into the sky, flying towards the forest.
As he arrived in the clearing, Vaine was already there, just as she had said. As she saw him she ran towards him and hugged him tightly (AN: That's exactly what I would do if I would see Yue ^-^).
"I am very pleased you have come, Yue.", she said and placed a light kiss on his cheek (AN: again exactly what I would do ^-^).
"I didn't want you to wait for nothing.", Yue said as Vaine broke the embrace.
"Thank you.", Vaine said and smiled, "But what about your master?"
"He is asleep right now.", Yue answered.
"Does he know about yesterday?"
"Mostly, yes."
"And does he mind that you are meeting me again?"
"I am not sure. But I think he would have said if he didn't want me to go."
"That is good, I don't want any trouble with your master."
"My master is not person who causes trouble for people like you."
"Good to know. Maybe I can meet him one day."
"Maybe."
"Now tell me, have you ever been here in this forest before?"
"No. I have spent all time with my master."
"So maybe I shall show you this place, how does that sound?"
"I think that sounds nice."
So, Vaine started guiding Yue around the forest. They both didn't recognize how time went by. But as they came back to the lake, it was already getting dark.
"I should really get back to my master.", Yue said.
"Really?", Vaine asked, "Too bad."
"Maybe I can manage to meet you again tomorrow."
"I would appreciate this.", Vaine replied.
"Same time, same place?", Yue asked.
"Sure."
"Okay, see you then, goodnight."
"Good night, Yue.", Vaine said and kissed him on the cheek.
As Yue returned, he found that Clow and Cerberus had gone inside the mansion. He went inside, trying not to make a sound. Suddenly, someone tipped him on the shoulder.
"So you're finally back?", the voice of his master asked.
"I am sorry for being away so long, master.", Yue said.
"Did you have fun with your friend?"
"I think so, yes."
"Alright then.", Clow said and returned to his room.
Yue was stunned, not quite sure what to do now. He followed his master and watched him sitting down at his desk. Yue stared at one wall, on which the warm light of a fire that was burning in the fireplace created very strange-looking shadows.
"Master?", Yue asked.
"Yes, Yue?", Clow asked back, "What is it, dear?"
"Don't you mind me meeting her?"
"Why should I?"
"Well, I just thought…"
"You are thinking way too much, Yue, my dear."
"I am sorry, master."
"Don't feel sorry, Yue. As long as you are fine, I am satisfied."
"Thank you, master."
"You meeting her again?"
"Yes, master."
"Very well.", Clow said and smiled broadly, "Let you heart fly to her, Yue. Let it fly."
"I will, master.", Yue answered and left the room.
Yue and Vaine went on meeting everyday at the same time at the same place. Vaine told Yue of all the things she had seen on her numerous voyages. And Yue showed her a few magic tricks that made her smile or even laugh. Yue liked seeing her smile, hearing her laugh. He couldn't imagine life without her anymore.
But then, one day, Vaine wasn't waiting for Yue at the lake. Yue waited there until the nightfall, but Vaine didn't show up. Finally, he headed back to Clow's mansion. He looked out of the window into the night and sighed. He remembered the last day. It was the day of their first kiss.
"Yue,", Vaine had said, "I am afraid that I love you."
"If you really love me, then there's nothing to be afraid of.", Yue had answered, "Because I think I love you, too."
"Oh Yue, that is wonderful."
"Allow me?"
"What?"
"To kiss you?"
"Yes, you have my permission, my love."
Yue sighed at the memory of her lips touching his. So sweet, so delightful.
Clow later found his guardian asleep in the hallway, amused about the fact that Yue was able to sleep anywhere.
The next day, Yue decided to take another try at finding his beloved. He headed for the forest and landed in the clearing with the lake. At first, Yue couldn't see anybody. But then, he heard something from behind.
"Here I am, my love."
At the sound of her voice, Yue turned around to face Vaine. But what he saw, he didn't expect…
AN: Cliffhanger, cliffhanger, nananananana! :-P This chapter already is so long, so I broke it here. Prepare for Vaine being evil and Yue being…Uhm, no, I'll not spoil that.
