Rising at Dawn
Chapter 5: Preparations

Previously:
"That wasn't soup. That was a special magical powder to stop magic!" They both froze. "Sakura!" "Sakura-san!" All throughout the house, the words 'Sakura!' and 'Sakura-san' could be heard as they ran down the stairs.

*~*

"I wonder what it tastes like." Sakura dipped a spoon into the 'soup' and put it to her lips. "Sakura!" Syaoran knocked the spoon out of her hand. "What's wrong with you, Syaoran? Going around hitting me like that!" "Sakura... that... soup... isn't..." Syaoran was panting too much to talk. "Sakura-san! That isn't soup! That's my mix for the magical powder!" "Oh! So that's why you panicked. It's a good thing I didn't let Kero have some." "Um... Sakura... you... didn't happen to leave the kitchen, did you?" "Only once to check on my cards. Why?" "Oh no." "Sakura. Sakura." "Kero? Where are you?" "Down here." There he was. A miniature sized Kero, and to think Kero was small enough, here was a creature who was one-third of his size. "Help me!" Kero kept shrinking until Kinai and Syaoran used fire on him. <cough> "What did you do that for!?" "That's the only way to stop the spell, pint-sized stuffed animal." "I'll go look for an antidote..." '...and leave the fighting to them.' "I'll help you!" Sakura ran after Kinai to avoid the fight as well.

*~*

"It's so dusty and creepy in here." "Not that many people use the basement." "Why is it so eerie in here?" 'Why is she acting so scared! Oh, I forgot. She's suppose to be scared of creepy things. Looks like she's going to see tougher days when he attacks.' "What are we looking for?" "If you see a green vile that says stiphe on it, let me know." They searched for quite a while in that basement until they found everything that they needed... except for the green vile. "I wonder where it could be." "Um... Kinai?" Kinai ran over to Sakura. "Is that it on the floor?" There lay a cracked bottle with a green liquid oozing out of it. "Uh-oh. Brace yourself!" The floor started shaking, causing a tremendous earthquake as something sprouted out of the place that the stiphe was spilled. It blossomed very quickly to reveal a crimson red blossom about the size of one's palm. "What is that?" "That's no ordinary plant." The blossom jumped out of the ground revealing its spiky, black roots. "Look out!" The roots came charging at them, and as Sakura grabbed the closest object from her and braced herself which happened to be a person, Syaoran came and blocked them with his sword. "Are you alright?" Sakura nodded, too frightened to move until she realized that she was clenching onto Syaoran. However, Syaoran didn't seem to notice yet. "Kinai, try to use your fire magic and be careful." "Volcanic blasts, hear my cry. Destroy that evil blossom, Fire!" The fire engulfed the plant leaving behind a mysterious seed. "Um.. Sakura, you can let got of me." "Let's grab the seeds and get out of here. "Yeah. Besides, Keroberos isn't holding out to well." "Just let me know if he..." "..turns green? That's what happend." "Oh no!" The three of them ran out of the dusty basement.

*~*

"Syaoran, Sakura, keep Keroberos warm and make sure he gets alot of rest. This might take a while to prepare." The three of them split up in the living room which was now depleted of its magic. 'They're going to the room I set magic in, so they should be okay. That's the only way that Zeron can't get to them. I'd better hurry.'

*~*

"Almost done. I just hope Keroberos is alright." Kinai kept mixing the items after brushing off a pound of dust off of them. When she finally finished, there was some sort of a pink powder that was left. "Perfect. Now if it will just change color to green, I can take it to them." The powder started changing slowly into a greenish color. "Yes!" Kinai ran out of the kitchen to run into the room that the others were in.

*~*

"Kero, please hang in there." "I... can't..." "Save your strength, Keroberos. Besides, Kinai is coming here any minute." "Hope you haven't been waiting long." Kinai ran out of the kitchen with a tiny vile of a powdery liquid. She swirled it until it changed to a silvery color and gave it to Kero to drink. "Yuck! I'm not drinking that!" "I added a chocolate pudding taste to it." "Hm..." After much consideration (yeah right!) Kero finally agreed to drink it. "Hey! This doesn't taste like chocolate pudding!" Kinai grabbed the packet behind her and stuffed into Kero's mouth. "Now it does." Kero kept the chocolate pudding in his mouth until they tickled him into swallowing it. "Aww... that's probably the last one I'll get in a long while!" "We have chocolate pudding in Hong Kong too, you know." "Really?" Kero's eyes sparkled. 'I think liked it better when he didn't know." Syaoran stared at Kero giving an impression that he was very annoyed of his floating around with stars in his eyes singing, "I love chocolate pudding, and it loves me. Together forever, that's how will be. C-h-o-c-o-l-a-t-e p-u-d-d-i-n-g!" "Shut up already!" "Whose gonna make me!" "I am!" Meilin was getting rather annoyed as well. "C-H-O-C-O-L-A-T-E P-U-D-D-I-N-G!" "At that rate, you won't be getting any!" 'Oops.' Kinai lost control of her annoyance, and was ready to pounce on Kero and choke him to death. Kinai sank back from the crowd as everyone stared at her in shock. "You could have at least finished him." "Hey!" "It's better than hearing that riddiculous song of a stuffed animal." "Watch it, you Chinese gaki!" "Who are you calling a gaki!" Kinai joined in on the fight. "Like teacher like student!" "Better than a silly stuffed animal who doesn't even know how to sing!" "Hey! I like my singing, thank you very much!" "Your not welcome." 'Sakura-san can actually make a joke. Amazing!' "Hey! Whose side are you on?" "Not yours. You made us all worried sick by not listening to me, and now you're yelling at everyone without having a single sign of gratitude. When will you learn, Kero?" Kero stared guiltily at the floor. 'No way! She can't make me guilty!' Kero stared back at the angry Sakura. 'Well, maybe a little bit... oh fine!' "I'm... sssoooorrrrry." 'What am I doing? I've never appoligized in my life!' "Apology accepted." Sakura smiled back at Kero. "I'm glad that's over." 'Hm... that wasn't so bad. Maybe I can get used to this apologizing thing... nah!' "You guys should go rest. Tonights going to be a busy night." "I'll call you when dinner's ready. Actually, we're all suppose to eat together, but I'll give you something to eat so that you won't be eating as if you were really hungry then." "Thanks, Kinai." "Meanwhile, I put off today's training because we have to get ready for the ceremony." "Well... alright." Kinai was a little hesitant about it, but she soon agreed. 'One day won't hurt... I hope.' "Oh no!" "What is it, Sakura?" "I don't have anything special to wear." Tomoyo volunteered. "I have a bit of cloth and things. I can make your dress right away. What time does the ceremony start?" "Nine o' clock." "What! That's just four hours away! I'm going to need at least six to finish a decent dress!" "I'll help you after I'm finished with making dinner." "Yeah, you should let her help. Kinai's a very good designer and seamstress. I'll let you look at the outfit she made for me." Meilin took the other girls to her room in the mansion while Kinai got ready to prepare dinner and the food at the party. Syaoran went to his room to get some rest to stay up all night.

*~*

"There! Now that all the food courses are done, I can go help Tomoyo-san and Sakura-san." Kinai ran upstairs to see that Meilin was showing them her outfit that she made for her. "Isn't it pretty?" There was a white, lacy gown with flourishing patterns and red ribbons all around. "That is so pretty! Tomoyo, what should we do? You're good at making costumes for action movies and things, but this looks more like a ball dress." Meilin stared at her in disbelief. "Um... Sakura, there is going to be a ball in the ceremony. Didn't you know?" "What! Oh no! I don't even know how to dance the traditional way!" "I'll make your dress, and Meilin can teach you the dance steps." "Kinai! How long have you been standing there?" "Ever since, 'Isn't it pretty?'" "Are you sure you can make a dress in time?" "No problem. Meilin's dress only took me half an hour to make. Besides, I have a few dress patterns that Tomoyo-san can help me pick out for you." "Why can't I pick it out?" "You can look at it after we're done. Now go on and practice your dancing." "Thanks, Kinai. Thank you, everyone." "Come on. We'll be dancing three types of dances tonight." Meilin took Sakura down at the dance floor to practice as Tomoyo looked over the designs that Kinai had.

*~*

"Alright. The first one will be a waltz, the second is a minuet. The third one is very tricky because it is a dance of the Li family. I'm not sure you'll get a chance to dance this one." "Why not?" "Because it's meant that only direct Li family members would be able to dance." "Oh. I see." "I don't mean to leave you out, but that's how it is. Don't worry. I'll stick to Syaoran so that he can't ask another girl, okay." "Meilin!" Meilin continued her teasing for a while and then began the dance lessons.

*~*

"Oh wow! Let's see. Hm... this one's pretty good. Oh how about this one! Um... I think I like this one the best." Tomoyo picked out an outfit that was a faint pink with lacy trimings and matching gloves. "Um... Tomoyo-san, what about yours?" "Hm... I have a few gowns with me." Tomoyo opened her bag to find that they were all crinkled up. "Oh no!" "That's alright. There's an ironing board in the room where I'm going to make Sakura-san's dress." "Alright! Thanks. Hey, no one would mind if I bring my video camera, will they?" "Um... I'm not sure, but if you're going to use it, you'll have to hide it or record the important family members." "Aww." "Or you could pretend you're getting them, but zoom up on Sakura-san over their shoulders." "Hey! That's a great idea, Kinai!" Tomoyo prepared her video camera and took her gown to iron it while Kinai makes Sakura's dress. "It's a good thing we got the measurements before she went down. It seems as though she's busy dancing." "I hope she's doing alright." "Hey, Kinai, what are you going to wear?" "Actually, I'm going to be tonight's hostess, so I won't be wearing anything special." "That's too bad. Why did they choose you?" "It's an honor to be the hostess when all of the elders are going to participating in the ceremony. Usually, we only have one or two, but this time, all of them are attending." "So that's why you're excited." "I just hope my cooking will be alright." "Don't worry. If it's going to be anything like the last time you made us meals, it will be great!" "Save some for me!" "Gyahh! Keroberos! You should be resting." "And what are you doing in Kinai's sewing basket?" "I don't know. I just wanted to follow you here." <sigh> "Alright then. You can help me with the sewing to pay for your food." "A small price to pay to get my paws on your cooking, Kinai." "Charming little guy." "Not that little." "It's just a figure of speech, Kero." "Oh. In that case, I guess I can be little for a day."

*~*

"And step and turn and alright, she got it!" "I did it!" Sakura jumped up and down in excitement as a clapping sound was heard in the distance. "Nice going, Sakura." "Syaoran?" "You were evesdropping again!" "Again?" "He's always spying on all of us once in a while, and he's getting pretty good at it too." 'Hm... now how can I get back at him? I've got it!' "Now that you've got it with me, Sakura, we'll have to get you a dance partner to see if you are ready." Meilin ran over to Syaoran and dragged him into the dance floor. "Alright. I'll turn on the music." Meilin turned on the CD player as Syaoran and Sakura started their dance. 'Alright. One two three, turn here and step back and...' "Sakura." "Hm?" "Relax! At this rate, you'll stiffen up before the dance ends. Just let it flow." Syaoran smiled assuringly at Sakura who smiled back in thanks. Sakura stopped tensing up and took Syaoran's advice. She was dancing like a pro in no time. Finally, the music came to an end. "Thanks, Syaoran. You're a great teacher." "Um... your welcome." Meanwhile, Sanori was spying on the three of them. 'So this is where they were. That Kinomoto is getting too close to Syaoran. I just hope Syaoran will get back on track with Kinai.'

*~*

<yawn> "Wow, that was tiring. Come to think of it, I haven't done that design in a long while." "Kinai!" "Huh? Oh, Sakura-san! I hope your dance lesson went well. Syaoran is here too?" "Oh, Kinai. How is it coming?" "Almost finished. I've just got to buy the matching accessories with Sakura-san." "Already? You finished that in forty-five minutes, Kinai!" "Sorry, I took so long. Normally, I would finish that design in twenty, but I haven't done it in so long, I pretty much had to teach my fingers all over again." "Thank you, so much, Kinai." "Huh? Oh, don't worry about it, Sakura-san. It was about time I got back to making dresses anyway. Come on, Sakura san. Let's do the one thing that many girls like most." "Shopping!" Sakura got really excited, but suddenly stopped. "But, I don't have that much money." "That's alright. I'll take care of it." "But, Syaoran!" "Look, Sakura, it was my fault that I didn't tell you about this, so I'll take care of it." "It's alright, Syaoran. Sakura-san is taken care of." "What do you mean, Kinai?" "Tomoyo-san just gave me her credit card to take care of it." "Well, if you say so." "Huh?" 'I just felt something. Oh, no. I'd better hurry. Zeron is coming.' "You should all go to your rooms and rest. It's going to be a busy night. Please, Sanori-san. Get some rest." "Huh?" Sanori was startled in finding out that Kinai knew that she was there. "Alright, Kinai. You should rest after finishing up as well." "Yes, maam." Sanori walked off to her room. "You too. I don't want to catch you falling asleep in my cooking." "Alright." Meilin and Syaoran walked out of the room and turned around the corner. "Hm... something's not right." "What's wrong, Li?" "It seems as though Kinai is hiding something." "Naturally. All girls have something to hide." "Not like that! It feels as though she's trying to make us avoid something." "Well, if she knows magic, we'd better do as she says."
